iPhone 5S chassis surfaces in factory image alongside specifications

Earlier this month, we reported on an iPhone 5S leak that included production shots and a batch of specifications, some of which went against what earlier leaks had said to expect of the latest iPhone. These specs have appeared again, this time from the Chinese website EXPReview, which also published an image of several iPhone 5S chassis’ lined up and plastic wrapped.

iPhone 5S

The chassis’ featured in the image look essentially the same as the iPhone 5, mirroring what we saw in the leaked production shots of the handset on July 17th. In the leak, a second shot of the chassis was also published, which shows the inside of the shell with its grooves, as well as a shot of the rear panel. You can see it for yourself below. This isn’t the first time this particular image has made an appearance.

Some of the earlier rumors that had surfaced about the iPhone 5S stated that Apple was looking into a larger display for its new iPhone models, but this latest leak collaborates what we heard a couple weeks ago: that the iPhone 5S will feature the same panel as the iPhone 5. As such, it’ll be a 4-inch IGZO with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels.

Reportedly, users will be seeing the same A6 chip put in the iPhone 5S, bringing with it a faster clock speed than previously available, as well as 2GB of RAM. There’s also said to be a dedicated quad-core GPU, and NFC connectivity, which we’ve heard previously. The rear camera is said to be a 12-megapixel sensor with a dual-LED flash.

Rumor has had it that production of the iPhone 5S would start this month, and the image of the chassis’ seem to substantiate that. As always, take the specifications with a healthy grain of salt, but thus far they match up with some other recent leaks that surfaced this month. You can check out other iPhone 5S details that have leaked in the timeline below.

Samsung Galaxy Note III prototype leaks with shot of internals

The Samsung Galaxy Note III, which will be launching in September according to some rumors, has surfaced in various leaks and sketches, but most of what has been revealed about the device concerns its specifications, with images being slight, and those that are published being fairly low in quality. Now a couple shots said to be of the prototype device have surfaced, and one shows the handset’s internals.

The shots were posted by a user over on Chinese website Weibo, and are said to be of a prototype of the Galaxy Note III, which we saw once before in somewhat distant, vague photographs. While one just shows a front shot of the handset, complete with a screen protector and a couple sections censored out, the second – which you can see above – reveals what it looks like under the hood.

Thus far, information that has surfaced indicates that the Galaxy Note III will be surfacing with different processing architectures, with one anticipated to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor as an LTE-Advanced edition, and another with the Samsung Exynos Octa core processor. Either is said to accompany 2GB of RAM.

As far as display goes, rumors have it pegged as a large 5.7-inch Super AMOLED with full HD 1080p resolution. The camera is said to be a 13-megapixel offering using the same sensor found in the GALAXY S 4, although that is yet to be seen either way. Obviously, the device will also be coming with the latest iteration of the S-Pen, as well.

On July 10, several machine codes surfaced suggesting different carrier editions of the Galaxy Note III, among them being a few for the four big carriers we have stateside: Verizon (SM-N900V), AT&T (SM-N900A), Spring (SM-N900S), and T-Mobile (SM-N900T). Reportedly, the Exynos models of the handset will be the international edition, while the Snapdragon 800 offering will be available stateside.

Panasonic GX7 digital camera leaks in new batch of images

Last week, the Panasonic GX7 leaked in the German magazine Foto, giving us a decent look at the camera, as well as a roster of its specifications, most of which were in line with leaks that had previously surfaced regarding the digital camera. Now the camera has leaked again, this time on the Japanese website Digicame, complete with several new images of the camera.

1

This latest leak shows the camera from four different angles: the front, top, back, and the back again, this time with the digital view finder raised. It matches the image seen in Foto Magazine, and the specs are likewise the same, again listing 16-megapixels rather than the 18-megapixels that had been reported in earlier leaks.

According to Digicame, the information was provided to them by an individual “who can be trusted.” By all accounts, this is a high-end digital camera, and is being styled after the Four Third L1 camera, giving it a nice retro look. Judging from the pictures, the camera’s body looks fairly slim (sans the lens, obviously), but does have a protruding handhold for gripping.

Says the source of this leak, the Panasonic GX7 features a 16-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor, as well as a 3-inch view finder with 1.04 million dots and the ability to tilt up to 80-degrees. The electronic view finder, meanwhile, is said to be tiltable up to 90 degrees, which is substantiated by the last picture in the batch. Both this leak and the last claims the EVF has 2.76 million dots.

Videos can be recorded in up to full 1920 x 1080/60p, while the shutter speed goes up to a fast 1/8000, and the ISO up to 25,600. As far as software goes, there’s said to be 22 filters of some sort, as well as panorama and a silent mode for candid image taking. Again we’re hearing that the camera has on-sensor stablization, as well as WiFi and NFC.

OPPO N-Lens smart cameras to take on Samsung’s Android snappers

OPPO will take on Samsung’s Galaxy Camera with the new OPPO N-Lens range, the company has confirmed, with what are expected to be new Android-based smart snappers to challenge traditional point-and-shoots. The N-Lens line-up will be the “most important flagship series for Oppo going forward” the Chinese company told Engadget, as well as confirming there’d be cellular connectivity.

oppo_find_5_camera

Exactly what OS the OPPO cameras will use is unclear, though the most likely option is Android given the company has some experience using Google’s platform. Beyond that, the only other tidbit is chatter of both a high-resolution sensor and strong low-light performance in a previous Android Authority leak.

So-called smart cameras have taken a number of different approaches in recent months. The Samsung Galaxy Camera, for instance, effectively replaced the in-house OS in one of Samsung’s existing cameras with Android and paired it with an LTE radio for data-only use; however, the more recent Galaxy S4 Zoom – which we reviewed earlier this month – attempted to blur the lines a little more between camera and phone, including both an optical zoom and voice call support.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy NX interchangeable lens camera sticks to the original Galaxy Camera pattern, though with more ambitious optics.

Right now, it seems OPPO is viewing the N-Lens range as cameras first, which might indicate connectivity limited to getting photos off the device and shared on social networking services. The company has already experimented with high-resolution sensors on phones, putting a 13-megapixel CMOS into the OPPO Find 5 for instance.

Beyond that, we don’t know pricing or availability for the N-Lens, though it’s possible OPPO could aim for an IFA 2013 launch in a few months time.

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 ‘Treasure Tag’ accessory for Lumias

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 'Treasure Tag' accessory for Lumias

Nokia is planning to release a Bluetooth accessory for its Lumia lineup called the “Treasure Tag,” according to various sources. A report from The Verge tallies with a previous mention on Yahoo’s message boards that names the tag, which could be a reason Nokia’s adding Bluetooth 4.0 and LE support to Lumias via the impending Amber update. Apparently, the tag features NFC for easy pairing and can be set up and tracked using a Windows Phone 8 app that’ll incorporate Nokia’s LiveSight AR tech. It’s also said that a button on the Treasure Tag will reveal the location of a misplaced phone using an audible notification, if it’s in range of the accessory. It could look like the above diagram, is allegedly launching in “the coming weeks,” and is thought to be one of several planned accessories that’ll make use of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard.

Samsung reportedly crafting 10- and 12.2-inch tablets with 2,560 x 1,600 displays

Samsung reportedly crafting 10- and 12.2-inch tablets with 2,560 x 1,600 displays

Samsung already has tablets on the market bearing almost any display size that might interest you. If a tweet from @evleaks is to be believed, Sammy has yet more slates in the pipeline, including its biggest one yet. Allegedly, the unannounced SM-P900 tablet carries a 12.2-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 screen (same res as the Nexus 10), an Exynos 5 Octa heart, and an S-Pen that would make it part of the Note family. Another device, known as the SM-P600, is said to cram that same resolution into a 10-inch display, and switches Samsung’s chip for a Snapdragon 800. We’d be more willing to buy the rumor if there were pics to back it up, but it’s rare for the source to be completely off the mark. Could we see these new tablets at IFA alongside a trio of Galaxy Note III models? Join us in a little under a month for the Samsung edition of Mythbusters.

Sony’s flagship Honami smartphone sneaks into FCC’s database

Sony's flagship Honami smartphone sneaks into FCC's database

In the past, Sony hasn’t been too strict about issuing confidentiality requests when slipping its Xperia smartphones into the FCC’s database. The Honami, however, is no typical Xperia. For those unaware, manufacturers generally submit equipment to the FCC for testing shortly before the product is ready to launch on US shores — once its radios are cleared for use on the airwaves that the FCC controls, precious little stands between said product and your hands.

We’ve seen a stream of Honami leaks over the past few weeks, but none have indicated quite so clearly that it’s nearly ready for a formal debut. The filing masks all internal and external photos, but a software version entitled “s_atp_honami_1_25_1” (seen after the break) makes obvious what device we’re looking at. This, Motorola’s X, and an impending iPhone refresh? Looks like we’re in for a star-studded autumn in the handset universe.

Moto X gesture-tastic camera app makes cameo in leaked APK

Moto X gesturetastic camera app makes cameo in leaked APK

We already know the camera app for the Moto X (and Droid Ultra, MAXX and Mini) will feature a minimalistic, gesture-based UI, but the clever souls over at Android Police went one step further and recently leaked an APK of the app. The file (later pulled and cached here) installs just fine on many devices but lacks some functionality. We tested it on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and it worked okay, mostly. HDR and slow-motion video recording are disabled, panorama mode crashes and Quick Capture (double-twist your wrist to launch the camera) is not operational.

Still, the camera UI is ultra simple — swipe right for the settings, left for the gallery, up /down to zoom; tap to capture, and hold to take multiple shots. The resulting pictures (16:9 aspect ratio) look pretty much like those snapped with the stock Android camera, and suffer from the same composition issues since the viewfinder crops the right edge of every image. It’ll be interesting to see if any of this changes when we finally get our hands on the Moto X next week. Until then, check out the gallery of screenshots below and sound off about the APK in the comments.

Moto X reportedly comes with Magic Glass, laminated aluminum structure

DNP Moto X

There’s been a deluge of Moto X reports, and it shows no signs of stopping. We’ve seen the device’s press shots, camera UI and benchmark results, and most recently, we’ve even watched the T-Mobile version waltz past the FCC. Now, we’re treated to purported press images and unannounced features from Taylor Wimberly, formerly of Android and Me. According to Wimberly, a sheet of specially treated Gorilla Glass covers the phone’s entire face and wraps around its sides, forming a nearly seamless gap with the rear shell. Apparently, it’s special enough that Motorola will call it “Magic Glass.” As another nod to the phone’s toughness, he also claims a laminated aluminum structure makes its frame even stronger, despite being thin and lightweight. Check out the images to decide the report’s veracity for yourself, but don’t sweat it too much — we’ll be able to confirm it in a few days when the phone launches on August 1st.

Plastic iPhone appears with FCC markings

The plastic iPhone has leaked enough times now that there’s nothing particularly unique about another leaked image – except for the one that leaked on Weibo today showing FCC markings on the back of the shell. Previous leaks of the handset have shown the same design, but only with the Apple and iPhone logos.

132305

The design of the handset featured in the image is the same as the one we’ve seen several times now, not the least of which was the gallery that appeared comparing the plastic model to the iPhone 5. The speaker holes, microphone, and such are the same, with the only notable difference being metal edging around the headphone and lightning ports.

Unfortunately, no details about the handset was provided with the Weibo post, but the image is interesting nonetheless. According to a leak that surfaced earlier this month – also on Weibo – the plastic iPhone will be available in two models, both of which look the same but feature different hardware and will come in at different price points.

Reportedly, the lesser of the two models is codenamed Zenevo, and will feature a Samsung H5P dual processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and FDD 4G connectivity. The other model, according to tipsters, is codenamed Zegato/Bertone and will feature an H6P processor and 1GB of RAM, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and TDD 4G LTE support.

Also leaked today was a rumor that the handset would be announced on September 6, but word has surfaced since then stating this isn’t the case. As with all the rumors, take it all with a grain of salt. Check out the timeline below for more rumors that have cropped up on recent weeks.
