Verizon Moto X leaked in image ahead of launch

The Verizon Moto X handset has made an appearance in an image received by the folks over at Android Central, in which we see a Nexus 4-esque black handset with the new Motorola logo up in the left corner. This follows a roadmap that leaked yesterday showing the release date of the handset on Verizon (as well as the HTC One).

verizon-moto-x

The image is tagged on top with a “Not for sale” stamp and a “Motorola confidential property” stamp on the bottom. There’s no Verizon branding on the handset, but the source of the image says that it is the handset destined to be offered from Verizon. Overall, the phone isn’t very large, and looks quite a bit similar to the Nexus 4.

We also get a look at the Android software running on it, of which there is only one really notable portion. As the folks at Android Central point out, a careful look at the keys on the bottom of the screen reveals that the background behind them is transparent. This is a change up from what we currently see, and could indicate anything from a customization specific to the phone to a newer version of Android being on it.

Aside from that, what we see are some large bezels at both the top and the bottom of the screen, as well as the generic black color that will be offered on the handset (in addition to white, it is said) available from carriers. The customization options, of which they’re rumored to be numerous, will be available to those who order online with their own selections.

According to the leaked roadmap, Verizon will be launching the Moto X on August 23, giving us a bit over a month left in waiting. It is possible Motorola will be revealing the device well before this date, however, especially considering the number of leaks that have surfaced concerning the device. For more information, check out the timeline below and the Moto X tag portal.

Toshiba AT7-A 7″ Android tablet leaks with Jelly Bean

Toshiba has launched some tablets in recent times, including the Excite Write featured below. Now hints of another one in the works has surfaced: the AT7-A slate running Android Jelly Bean. Information about the tablet has cropped up in some benchmarks over at the GFXBench site, and although details are sparse at the moment, it does give us a few specs.

Taking a look at the benchmarks, we see that the Toshiba AT7-A is running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and is likely featuring a 7-inch display based on the listed 1024 x 600 resolution. In addition, as far as specs go, it looks like inside we’ll find a 1.6GHz processor and ARM Mali-400 graphics. Unfortunately, there aren’t any other relevant details provided in the benchmarks.

Toshiba hasn’t said anything about the tablet one way or the other, and so while it would be nice to get a look at some more specs, we will have to wait for some more detailed leaks or an official announcement of the slate, whichever comes first. Thus far there’s no indication of when the AT7-A tablet might be released, nor how much consumers can expect to pay for it.

To get an idea of where Toshiba might go with the tablet, we can take a look at the Excite Pure, Pro, and Write tablets the company unveiled last month, each of which runs Android and features a 10.1-inch display. These tablets sport Tegra processors, were launched last month, and were priced at $299.99 (Pure), $499.99 (Pro), and $599.99 (Write).

The Excite Write tablet was launched with pen support, and featured such things as an 8-megapixel rear camera and 32GB of storage. Given the smaller screen size of the AT7-A, it isn’t a stretch to imagine the price will fall lower than these tablets, but that is yet to be seen.

Moto X publicly dogfooded by Google’s Schmidt as leaks increase

Rumors of Motorola’s upcoming smartphone are heating up. Currently known as the Moto X, the device has been the victim of numerous leaks and speculation over the last several weeks, and today we’re seeing yet another addition. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt was spotted using a mysterious device that we can only suspect to be the Google-owned Moto X device.

Business Leaders Meet In Sun Valley, Idaho For Allen And Co. Annual Conference

At the annual Allen & Co. business conference yesterday, Schmidt was seen using a mysterious device that looks a lot like Motorola’s Moto X handset, based on the handful of image leaks that we’ve seen so far. The photos of Schmidt using the phone are highly detailed, allowing us a good look at the device that he doesn’t appear to be keeping on the down-low.

The model that Schmidt is using appears to have a slightly glossy rear white shell with a curved shape. The camera module and LED flash are placed prominently in the center of the device toward the top, with what looks to be the speaker directly next to the camera. We also see that the headphone jack is dead center on the top edge of the device, rather than on one side or the other.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, talks on the new yet to be released Google produced Moto X phone at the annual Allen and Co. conference in Sun Valley

As for the front of the device, it appears to be a solid slate of all black, but we can’t get a good look, seeing as how Schmidt’s ear is enveloping most of the phone. The volume rocker and the power button appear to be situated on the right edge of the device with thin chrome buttons. The edges of the phone look really thin, while the center is a bit thicker with its curved look, which is a rather unique shape for a smartphone these days.

The photos of Schmidt using this phone match up almost perfectly with the latest image leak of the device that shows a black matte model. It has the same curved rear shell with the camera module mounted in the same location, as well as the centered headphone jack on the top edge. One thing’s for sure: this phone exists, but the only question is what will it be called officially? And when is it arriving?

BlackBerry A10 image surfaces shortly after spec leak

Yesterday, the BlackBerry A10 – codenamed Aristo – had some of its specs leaked, showing us what the company has in mind for its Z10 reboot. Now the folks over at Boy Genius Report have nabbed an image of the smartphone, as well as a screenshot of its system information showing it running BlackBerry version 10.2.0.552.

According to the specs leak, the BlackBerry A10 is said to feature a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720. In addition, there’s said to be a dual-core processor and a separate graphics processor, something that eschews the integrated chip the company elected to use in its current offerings.

This is alongside a reported 2GB of RAM, per yesterday’s leak. The device is reportedly being focused towards gaming and power in general, and features a touchscreen display rather than a keyboard. And then there’s the actual styling of the device, which BGR reported as being more finished and to have a more refined fit over the Z10 handset currently available.

The back of the device is reported as featuring “something similar” to what is found on the current BlackBerry Q10 device, and overall it is more rounded in nature than the company’s other phones. Also leaked yesterday was the BlackBerry 9720, which is a reboot of the Q10 in the same way the A10 is a reboot of the Z10 handset.

The BlackBerry 9720 is said to feature styling that makes it similar in nature to the 9700, updating its look so that it falls in line with the company’s other 2013 devices. That’s the extent of what we know about them right now, but it is enough to give BlackBerry faithfuls an idea of what to expect. What do you think? Let us know!

Plastic iPhone purportedly featured in leaked high-resolution images

Rumors of a plastic budget iPhone surfaced many months ago, and although they’ve been denied, the leaks have continued, with some saying they’re close to hitting the market, others saying the images that have surfaced are just cases, and finally others saying a plastic iPhone will happen, but won’t be a budget device. Now some high-resolution shots of the mythical plastic iPhone have surfaced, and word has it they’ll be available soon.

Capture

The images appeared over at Fanatic Fone, which says has been confirmed as the real deal by its “wonderful and trusted sources,” and that the same sources say the device will be launched “very soon.” There wasn’t any mention of when that launch day could be, however, and it was stated that the pricing won’t be much lower than the regular iPhone models. Of course, nothing has been confirmed, and we’ve heard this before.

The handset featured in the images is said to be made of polycarbonate material, and to feel “smooth,” with easy fingerprint transfer. It is also said to be the same size as the iPod Touch, which – assuming it all pans out and Apple launches this version of the iPhone – won’t give consumers much incentive to buy the Touch, depending on how the pricing works out.

On July 1, we saw an image leak of three bright plastic iPhones that are visually the same as the one featured above, except in strange bright green, yellow, and a reddish color similar to Laffy Taffy shades (its hyper saturated colors could be the result of the camera used to take the image, however). We already saw the green version of the plastic iPhone on June 29.

Back on January 8, we heard via The Wall Street Journal that Apple had been discussing releasing a cheaper iPhone for the last several years, part of the reason why rumors have been floating around regarding it for so long. The same individuals said that the company could be launching them in the latter portion of this year, and if such is true – and others in the same vein – we won’t have too much longer to wait.

Microsoft Surface RT 32GB discount surfaces at Staples

On June 18, we saw an educational discount for the Surface RT leak, with the program being aimed at schools and universities. The average consumer will soon have an opportunity to nab the device for a discounted rate too, however, according to a leaked Staples advertisement showing the discounted tablet at $349 – a drop of $150.

surfacecut

This falls in line with a rumor that surfaced earlier stating Microsoft had plans to significantly discount the Surface RT tablets, with the sources having claimed the same new pricing that we’re seeing on the Staples advertisement. Although the Staples page only lists the 32GB version of the RT, the sources had claimed the 64GB version will be priced at $450 sans Touch Cover.

The Staples page links to a weekly advertisement layout, of which a few pages in we see a small square containing the newly discounted Surface RT. Clicking the advertisement block in the flyer then pulls up the Staples product page for the RT, which also lists the new pricing with a banner stating “Upcoming Deal.”

There’s no mention of Touch Covers being included in the deal, so we’re not sure if that will be an option at this point, or if buyers will have to fetch one elsewhere at the full price. We’ll known for sure starting July 14, this upcoming Sunday, however, when the deal goes live. According to the weekly advertisement flyer, the promotion will run through July 20.

Clicking on the reservation page allows you to find a store near you with the product in stock, but the final page that allows you to reserve it pulls up the current price of $499, so you’ll have to move fast come Sunday to get one at the lower pricing. We’ll keep an eye out for additional details on the 64GB model and possible Touch Cover discounts, so stay tuned!

Surface RT 32GB gets price cut to $349 at Staples, starting July 14th

Surface RT 16GB gets price cut to $349 at Staples, starting July 14th

It didn’t take long for us to grab some important details (well, a time and a place) about an incoming Surface RT price cut. Our source has forwarded a Staples ad — and working link — which reveals that a $150 price cut on the entry-level 32GB Surface RT will start this Sunday 14th July. No word on a discounted Touch Cover option, however, at least not from Staples, but we’ll fill you in if there’s other retailers jumping on the discount.

(Thanks, Brandon!)

Moto X and HTC One get August street dates on Verizon in leaked roadmap

DNP Moto Droid X and HTC Hero street dates possibly leaked via Verizon road map

Verizon’s flagship Moto X will release on August 23rd, according to a leaked road map obtained by PhoneArena. The site also notes that Motorola’s first handset built in the US gives users who order online the choice of separate colors for the back cover and trim and can also be engraved a la iPods and Zune HDs of yore; brick and mortar retail models will be standard black. The document also lists an August 1st release date for the HTC One, a phone we still have a soft spot for. We’ve reached out to the Big Red carrier for confirmation and will update this post accordingly should we hear back.

Kodak Micro Four Thirds camera leaks, tipped for 2014 arrival

Kodak may be in deep trouble financially, but it seems they’re trying to get their pennies in order and their balance back. Today, we’re seeing leaked photos of an upcoming Micro Four Thirds camera from the company that aims to put Kodak back into the photography spotlight. No official name has been determined for this new snapper, but it seems it’ll be called the S1.

130529_kodak_04l

It doesn’t appear to be the same one we saw back in January, either. Final specs are still a mystery, but based on the photos, we can get an idea of some of the things we’ll be working with when this bad boy eventually pops out on store shelves. The camera will have WiFi capabilities, and the overall body of the device seems pretty compact — nothing too surprising in the looks department.

The kit lens looks to be an Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, which also comes standard on Olympus PEN cameras as well as discontinued E-P series shooters. The camera will have a generously-sized LCD screen on the back, although we’re not sure if it’ll be touchscreen or not. Seeing as how there’s already plenty of physical controls on the camera, it’s not likely we’ll see a touchscreen on this one. It will, however, be able to pop out at an angle for easy viewing in live mode.

130529_kodak_05l

As many other Micro Four Thirds cameras, the S1 will be able to shoot in manual, as well as either shutter or aperture priority. Of course, there’s also an automatic mode for the novices, and you’ll also be able to record video, which we’re guessing will be 1080p, but we can’t be too sure at this point.

Based on the photos, it looks like there will be a matching flash for the camera, but we’re not sure if that will be available separately or if it will come with the camera. Again, no specs have been leaked for the camera, nor do we know about price, but come next year, Kodak fans should be able to grab one of these.

2014 MacBook and iPad IGZO display switch tipped

Apple‘s 2014 MacBook refresh will see the company switch to IGZO displays, it’s reported, reducing power consumption while simultaneously improving clarity. The switch, which isn’t expected to take place until the first half of next year, will see Apple raid the production lines of Sharp and LG Display, ETNews reports, with the iPad also potentially in line for the screen technology.

macbook_pro

IGZO – or indium gallium zinc oxide – is used by Sharp and others to replace the more traditional amorphous silicon substrate found in TFT LCD panels. Since IGZO demonstrates more electron mobility, it can be more efficient, and the individual pixels can be smaller.

That allows for higher-resolution displays, but also permits a reduction in backlighting for the same degree of brightness as a regular LCD. Sharp has used the technology for a number of smartphones and tablets in the Japanese market, but we’re only just seeing IGZO make its way to the desktop in the shape of displays from Sharp itself and ASUS.

Those advantages have long been said to have caught Apple’s attention, and in fact the company is believed to have quietly invested in Sharp so as to get first refusal on the panels once they reach mass-production level.

According to the Korean reports, Sharp may end up supplying both MacBook and iPad scale IGZO panels to Apple, trimming the power consumption of the notebooks and tablets in the process. It’s also expected that LG Display will join the supply chain with IGZO, and said that the company is already upgrading its existing AMOLED and LCD lines to be compatible with IGZO manufacturing.

For Apple, the biggest benefit could be Retina display resolution but without the drain on battery life. The company has made a name for its hardware thanks to the pixel-dense displays, but balancing the power demands of such panels is an ongoing challenge.
