A guide to street photography: Matt Stuart, manners and human autofocus

Matt Stuart looks for lightness and humor on the street

Street photography is the purest, most spontaneous way to create art with a camera. No studios, no props, no poses; all you need is the right equipment and a street with people on it. In this original series for Engadget, we’ll follow three seasoned street fighters and try to glean some practical wisdom about what engages their eyes, brains and fingers in the moments before they shoot.

We learned about manual exposure in the last installment. Now we’re going all in with a look at manual focusing. Our guide is Matt Stuart, a London-based photographer who’s made his name with funny and quirky shots of humanity going about its business; shots that often materialize and then disappear so quickly that even the fastest autofocus system would fail to keep up. Since Stuart’s style often involves stepping right up to people, almost to the point of invading their personal space, we’ll also try to figure out how he manages to avoid confrontation.

This beautiful camera designed by Jony Ive just sold for $1.8 million

This beautiful camera designed by Jony Ive just sold for $1.8 million

This one-of-a-kind Leica M camera by Apple design pope Jony Ive and Marc Newson has reached a record-shattering $1,805,000 at the Sotheby’s RED charity auction. It was expected to sell for about $750,000 but it seems that some rich kid really wanted a new toy for the holidays. Good, as all this money goes to fight AIDS.

What If Jony Ive Designed Leica Cameras?

What If Jony Ive Designed Leica Cameras?Apple’s designer extraordinaire, Sir Jony Ive, has been roped in to design a custom charity Leica rangefinder, which will also be one of the flagship products that will be introduced in next month’s Product (RED) charity auction. This custom Leica rangefinder camera also had a hand in its design by another industrial design celebrity, Marc Newson, and the final design has already been shown off by the manufacturer from Germany.

This custom camera was derived from the Leica M digital 35 millimeter full-frame camera, where it will feature a full-format CMOS sensor, in addition to a high-performance processor, as well as Leica’s APO-Summicron –M 50-millimeter f/2 ASPH lens. As for the camera’s body itself, it was developed using Ive’s signature anodized aluminum where it boasts of a pattern of small, laser machined holes, which is not too different from the speaker grilles which were showcased in Apple’s MacBook Pro range of laptop computers. We look forward to see just how much money can this particular custom designed Leica camera raise in an auction some time from now.

Leica claims that this particular camera took 85 days to create, and it was the result of both Ive and Newson going through a whopping 561 models as well as the prototyping process of nearly 1,000 parts. Truly, this is a labor of love.

Leica has been making some very high quality compact digital cameras for a number of years. These cameras aren’t exactly known to be cheap, but they are known for high-quality photography. Leica C Compact Camera Announced

Leica C Compact Camera AnnouncedThe Leica brand is one known to photographers around the world, and for the most part the company has released cameras that have been priced out of the amateur photographer’s budget, but if you have £550 to spare, perhaps Leica’s recent announced Leica C camera could be yours for the taking. The Leica C will be part of Leica’s new digital compact camera lineup and at £550 it does not seem overly expensive for a Leica camera, although it might be for a compact camera, but we guess sometimes people don’t mind paying for the brand.

If the Leica C is a camera you’re considering, the camera will sport a 12MP 1/1.7” MOS sensor. It will also come with a fixed-mount lens of that will allow photographers to shoot between 28-200mm, an aperture of f/2.0-5.9, and an integrated electronic viewfinder (EVF). As expected of most cameras these days, the Leica C will also come with WiFi that will allow photographers to wirelessly transfer photos or videos captured onto a mobile device or laptop, along with NFC that can be used with devices, such as smartphones, who have the technology embedded in them.

Other features include a programmable ring around the lens that photographers can use to program to adjust things such as aperture, shutter speed, and zoom. The Leica C will be available in the UK via authorized Leica dealers around mid-September.

Leica C Type 112 Camera Could Be Announced Soon

Leica C Type 112 Camera Could Be Announced SoonLeica cameras tend to be on the expensive side as far as cameras are concerned, and even their cheapest offerings can be compared to regular mid-ranged DSLR cameras, but if you have the cash to splash and want to take your photography to the next level, a new Leica camera could be on its way that you might want to hold out for. According to the Taiwan National Communications Commission, a certain Leica C type 112 camera has been revealed. It is likely that this camera will be announced in the fall since Leica’s chairman has confirmed that the company will be announcing several new products then.

While the full specifications of this Leica C type camera has yet to be unveiled, it will come with built-in WiFi capabilities that allows for wireless transfer of photos and videos to a computer or mobile device, which we guess is a pretty common feature these days. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info, so check back with us at a later date for more updates.
