Lomography Petzval Lens: Retro-Fantastic Goodness for Your Modern DSLR

Photography has come a long way since its beginnings, but there are still some amazing things to be discovered by looking at how things worked back then. Inspired by the early days of photography, this lens has been re-engineered from one that was invented in the 19th century.

    petzval lens dslr lomography

The team of Lomography have released their Petzval lens, which is supposed to replicate the lens that was originally invented by Joseph Petzval in Vienna, Austria, in 1840. It will work with Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount DSLRs.

The original Petzval lens was used to create beautiful portrait shots, and the new lens keeps the same strong color saturation, depth of field, bokeh elements, etc for which the lens was lauded.

Lomography launched their project as a Kickstarter campaign, and it’s been wildly successful so far. They’ve already amassed over $833,000 versus their goal of $100,000 – so this lens will definitely be made. There are 25 days left of funding, but you’ll have to pledge $400(USD) to get yours.

Lomography reinvents Petzval lens for analog and digital SLRs

When it was invented in 1840, the Petzval lens revolutionized photography thanks to its f/3.6 aperture. It’s legendary for producing images with super sharp centers and unique backgrounds with a whirly bokeh — as such it’s particularly well suited for shooting portraits. Most Petzval lenses today are defective because of age and not optimized for modern cameras, so Lomography set out to reinvent the lens for the 21st century. The company just launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the Petzval lens back for $300 — it’s teaming up with Zenit to manufacture high-quality lenses for analog and digital SLRs with Nikon F and Canon EF mounts. Lomography’s Petzval lens is made of brass, features a gear rack focusing mechanism and comes with a Waterhouse aperture set (f/2.2, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11 and f/16). Are you as intrigued as we are? Follow the source link below for the full campaign details.

Sony RX100 II camera lens attachment tipped for smartphones

The Galaxy S 4 Zoom offers a point-and-shoot style camera attached to the body of a smartphone, but if you’re wanting something with robust camera sensor that can be removed when you don’t need it, you’re not going to find it sadly. However, it’s rumored that Sony will be releasing a camera lens attachment with the same specs as the RX100 II that was recently unveiled.

    sony_rx100_ii_hands-on_sg_14-580x406

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, two anonymous sources say that Sony will be releasing such an accessory at some point in the future, and while it’s essentially a clip-on lens, it packs a 20.2-megapixel Exmor RS sensor with a Carl Zeiss lens that uses your smartphone’s display as a viewfinder.

This basically means that the attachment is its own camera, but it needs a few more functions in order to take photos, and this is where the smartphone comes in to offer a viewfinder and change around settings for taking optimal photos. The lens also has a built-in battery, WiFi, and NFC. We’re not sure exactly how it will communicate with your smartphone, but we’re guessing it’ll use one of these wireless protocols listed.

It’s unclear whether the camera attachment will only be compatible with Sony’s Android devices or if it’ll work with all smartphones using an adapter, but we’re guessing that Sony might keep it exclusive to Sony devices at least for a little while.

The attachment does seem a little far-fetched, but sources say that they’re pretty confident that Sony will release it soon. As for a price tag, that’s not yet discussed, but seeing as how the RX100 II costs $750 (with the lens most likely being a big part of the cost), we’re guessing the attachment won’t be cheap.

GlassKap project brings 3D-printed crosshairs, macro lens to Google Glass (video)

GlassKap brings 3Dprinted crosshairs, macro lens to Google Glass

Todd Blatt wants to have more fun with Google Glass than just the occasional game of Battleship, and he has been crowdfunding 3D-printed GlassKap add-ons to spice things up. His newest additions to the line have us especially intrigued, though: he just unveiled a set of crosshairs (pictured above) and a macro lens (after the break). Both function as you’d expect, letting Glass wearers either live out their future soldier fantasies or snap up-close photos that they’d normally miss. The September launches for both accessories are contingent on Blatt reaching his $1,500 funding goal, although that should happen soon when it takes a $30 pledge to set aside a GlassKap. The real challenge is obtaining Glass in the first place.

Nokia Lumia 1020 camera grip leaks at all angles

It’s no secret that the Nokia EOS (or Nokia 1020 as it’ll be called later this week, more than likely), will be rolling out with some serious photography power. Here as we saw very, very briefly earlier this week, we’ve gotten another look at a key accessory for this machine – a camera grip that makes the machine much more like the big-handling machines its amalgamation of lenses and processing abilities suggests.

    59df1e426f1a58b475bc62b2adc183ba

This case works – or would very much appear to work – with an extra bit of battery as well, adding on 1020mAh (likely an added 40% life-span or so) to the Nokia smartphone as well. Plugging in through the smartphone’s microUSB port at its bottom (if you’re holding the machine vertically, that is), this accessory also makes way for the device’s massive lens and flash cover.

You’ll find this machine delivered in white, but as it has been with the large cross-section of Nokia devices revealed over the past several years, you can expect a set of alternate colors as well. Wouldn’t want to be left out in the cold without options!

Up top is a physical shutter button that’ll depress to hit the Nokia smartphone’s own physical shutter button. On the side is a battery button that’ll light up 1-4 bulbs depending on how much power the machine has in it, and you’ll find a grippier bit up front for your left hand’s remaining tendrils. The bottom, then, also reveals a socket with screw rings for mounting this machine on a tripod.

Have a peek at the rest of the tips and leaks revealed in recent days and weeks on the Nokia 1020 and get ready for the full event on the 11th of July – that’s tomorrow!

A Lot of Cameras Are Going to Change in the Tiniest Way Possible

A Lot of Cameras Are Going to Change in the Tiniest Way Possible

If you use a Sony or Fujifilm camera or Nokia phone or anything like that, you may notice a slight difference in future editions of your favorite camera and phones. The iconic Carl Zeiss imprint on the camera lens will now be just ZEISS. I guess they were growing tired of non photogs asking who the heck is Carl Zeiss?

Olloclip announces 2x telephoto lens for iPhone 5, we go hands-on

Olloclip announces telephoto lens for iPhone 5, we go handson

Remember the Olloclip lens for the iPhone 4? That model’s done mighty well in Apple retail stores, so it’s only fitting that there’s a follow-up. Today at the CE Week line show in New York, we got a look at the company’s upcoming telephoto lens, which complements the original clip-on by adding 2X magnification. Priced at $100 versus $70 for its predecessor, the accessory offers a circular polarizing lens on the other side, keeping in line with the company’s existing two-in-one design. You can get the standalone clip-on lens for the aforementioned price when the gadget debuts in July — it’s compatible with Olloclip’s previously announced $49 iPhone 5 case as well.
