Nokia Lumia 1020 Used To Document Underwater Diving Mission

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is quite the smartphone. Not only does it pack some pretty decent hardware under the hood, but it comes with a whopping 41MP PureView camera attached with it. While Nokia’s hardware specs might not necessarily match up with Android at the moment (there are rumors suggesting that Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 will add 2K display and Snapdragon 805 support), Nokia has made up for it with its camera technology.

Now if you’re wondering just how good and reliable Nokia’s camera technology is, it seems that it’s good enough where Nokia has teamed up with Fabien Cousteau on an underwater dive known as Mission 31, which will basically see Cousteau and his team spend 31 days underwater, a day longer than Cousteau’s grandfather did back in 1963.

Cousteau and his team will also document their entire dive using the Nokia Lumia 1020, but given that the phone isn’t water-resistant or waterproof, we can only assume it will be housed in a waterproof casing to be used during the mission. We’ve seen some pretty good photos taken with the Lumia 1020 and how it has been used to shoot fashion photography, so it will be interesting to see how it holds up in a documentary-like setting.

In the meantime Nokia is inviting users to share photos and videos of their own outdoors adventure and tag the photos with #NokiaMission31. The winner will be flown to a luxury hotel in Florida where they will be trained as an open water diver and with those skills, they will also get to participate in the dive with Cousteau himself. For more information, do check out the video above.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used To Shoot Fashion Magazine’s Entire Issue

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used To Shoot Fashion Magazines Entire IssueGiven how advanced smartphone cameras have gotten these days, it is possible to take photos and videos which are of excellent quality. Of course it cannot be compared to high end professional cameras, but we reckon it is more than decent for personal use as well as for enthusiasts.

In the past we’ve seen how phones like the iPhone 5s was used to film a Burberry fashion show, and now it seems that for the 10th edition of their magazine, UK fashion magazine, Centrefold, has decided to do away with their more expensive cameras and shoot the entire issue using the Nokia Lumia 1020. Nokia Lumia 1020 Used By Scientists To See Behind Objects

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used By Scientists To See Behind ObjectsOur smartphone cameras are getting better with every version that is released. In fact it is safe to say that in some cases, our smartphone cameras have completely replaced the need for a compact digital camera, unless of course the compact camera had features and a level of quality that your smartphone cannot match.

However recently a bunch of scientists have managed to take the Nokia Lumia 1020 and used its camera to see objects that are hidden behind other things. For example objects that it could see through includes frosted glass, onion skin, and even chicken breast! (more…)

More On Black Update For AT&T Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 Gets New Firmware Too

More On Black Update For AT&T Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 Gets New Firmware TooEarlier today, we talked about how the Nokia Lumia 1020 has received the Black update, and here we are with more details on that. Apparently, Lumia 1020 from AT&T, being a smartphone that has above average photographic capabilities, sporting a 41-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens alongside a powerful Nokia Pro camera app, will now receive support for RAW images. This would push it up a notch to the professional level, but chances are it will not be able to replace the equipment of professional photographers anytime soon, although it might make for a good hobbyist “toy”.

As mentioned earlier, it will boast of many features from the Windows Phone GDR3 update, including rotation lock, custom ringtones, Nokia Camera, Storyteller, Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, and richer notifications on the lockscreen itself. The update should also have 3051.40000.134x.00xx as the update version, while for the Nokia Lumia 1520, it would receive a bump to version 1028.3534.1347.2001, where that will come with general performance and usability improvements. These updates will cater only for US AT&T devices at this point in time without any confirmation on whether it will arrive on international handsets soon. For those of you who want to perform a manual update, do go into Settings > Phone Update > Check for Updates, and make sure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network beforehand.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Getting Nokia Black Update Earlier Than Expected

Nokia Lumia 1020 Getting Nokia Black Update Earlier Than ExpectedGood news Nokia Lumia 1020 owners, if you have been looking forward to getting your hands on the GDR3 and Lumia Black update for your handset, you might be pleased to learn that the update has begun rolling out to Lumia 1020 devices a little earlier than expected, which we suppose is a good thing. The update will be adding the usual features that comes with the GDR3 update, and will introduce features such as Bluetooth LE support, Nokia Camera along with new imaging algorithms, Driving Mode, and rotation lock just to name a few. Like we said the update is currently being rolled out so we expect that it should not be too long before you get notified that you have an update waiting to be installed.

However if you don’t get the notification, fret not because it would be safe to assume that the update is also being rolled out in batches, meaning that it will eventually make its way to your handset. In the meantime if you have already received the update on your Lumia 1020 handset, do let us know in the comments below on how the update is treating you! Do you feel like it makes your handset feel like a completely new/different device?

Nokia Lumia 1020 used as exclusive camera for wedding by celebrity photographer

To show off the camera on its iPhone 5s, Apple partnered with Burberry to be the exclusive recording apparatus for the runway show. Nokia has revealed that it did something similar for its megapixels-packing Lumia 1020, which was used exclusively by famous photographer Joy Marie Smallwood to photograph and record a real wedding. Taking a […]

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used As Wedding Camera

Nokia Lumia 1020 Used As Wedding CameraWhen it comes to digital photography, we all know that our smartphones cannot really hold a candle to a dedicated digital camera, what more a DSLR. However, the folks over at Nokia have been working pretty hard to overcome that particular notion among us consumers, especially with their most recent flagship, the Nokia Lumia 1020. After all, when the Nokia Lumia 1020 happens to be the most popular Nokia camera on Flickr, it does go some lengths to let you know just how good it is, right? So much so that celebrity photographer Joy Marie Smallwood relied on a Nokia Lumia 1020 to shoot a wedding which recently happened at Capella Pedregal in Cabo, Mexico.

Joy Marie shared, “The quality of the photos we took at the Cabo wedding using the Lumia 1020 were crisp with a great depth of colour and totally exceeded our expectations. The 41-megapixel sensor is pretty outstanding for a camera phone.” We are pretty impressed with the results shown by the Nokia Lumia 1020, but I still think it would be best to rely on a full frame DSLR to capture everything about your big day right, how about you? If you love experimenting, then use the Lumia 1020 as a back up camera for the second photographer.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Is The Most Popular Nokia Camera On Flickr

Nokia Lumia 1020 Is The Most Popular Nokia Camera On FlickrOne of the features of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is its ability to snap some great photos, thanks to the built-in camera which is actually the highlight of the device itself. This is why we guess we can’t really say we’re too surprised to learn that the Nokia Lumia 1020 has recently shot up to the top of the charts as being the most popular Nokia camera on Flickr at the moment. As you can see in the graph above, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has recently overtaken the Lumia 920 as the most popular Nokia smartphone camera, and at the same time we can also see older non-Lumia devices starting to decline, like the Nokia N8, the 808 PureView, and the N95.

While the Lumia 1020 might not be as powerful in terms of hardware compared to the Lumia 1520 that was recently released, we suppose its camera is good enough where some might be willing to overlook its hardware specs in favor of it. What do you guys think? Are you surprised that the Lumia 1020 is as popular as it is in terms of photography?

New Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Touts Camera Capability

Companies would definitely need to do their bit when it comes to advertising their products, so that the masses would be aware of what is going on, and what are the options available for purchase when it comes to filling a need or want. Nokia’s latest ad surrounding their flagship Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone concentrates on one main aspect of this device – the camera itself.

Buttering up the audience by calling them those who “see things differently,” the Nokia Lumia 1020 does come with a camera that is worthy of mention, and in the ad, it touts the seamless integration of the camera alongside Nokia’s software that makes it a truly immersive package to lose yourself in. Needless to say, the ad would tout the capabilities of lossless zoom, not to mention the number of real-time settings which you are able to make with the camera prior to snapping a photo for the road. This 30-second ad spot ends by reminding you that AT&T has a offer with either the Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 alongside Nokia’s recently announced tablet, the Lumia 2520 (which we have already reviewed if you want to know more about it). Would such an ad actually cause you to actually consider picking up a Windows Phone-powered device if you have been a staunch Android or iOS supporter all this while?

    Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: fall 2013

    Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide: fall 2013

As the leaves turn to gold and flutter from the trees, the Engadget team digs out their scarves and mittens to get ready for the mad rush of phone launches that take place ahead of the holiday season. We’ve seen big devices (both large and high-profile ones) enter the world over the last few months, including new heavyweights from Apple and Google. Then there’s Samsung, Nokia and HTC, which are all following the philosophy that bigger is better.

But it’s not just on the hardware side that things are getting exciting. T-Mobile’s eliminated roaming charges and Verizon is doubling its LTE speeds to a whopping 80 Mbps. AT&T is offering customers a $5 daily pass for internet and is making mobile share plans the standard rather than the exception. Of course, if you’d prefer unlimited data, Sprint is promising that its Spark LTE will beat the field — but it’s currently only available in NYC, LA, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Whether you’re looking for a smartphone right now, or if you’re contract is about to expire, this is your guide to the best ones on the market.
