Nikon’s LD-1000 LED Movie Light, a bright addition to Nikon 1 video shoots

Nikon's LD1000 LED Movie Light, a bright addition to Nikon 1 video shoots

Yup, it’s just a light. But the LD-1000 is made by Nikon, and designed to attach to the company’s 1-Series mirrorless cameras, such as the J3 or V2, which makes it at least mildly interesting. The AAA-powered bracket-mounted lamp includes four white LEDs and a diffuser, and while its primary focus is to illuminate a subject during a video shoot, you can also use it to provide fill light for still photos, or whenever a constant low-power stream of illumination is more appropriate than a flash. Pick it up in black or white in October for a somewhat ambitious $99.95.

Nikon’s comically compact Coolpix S02 features a 3x lens, 1080p video and boosted image quality for $180

Nikon's comically compact Coolpix S02 features a 3x lens, 1080p video and boosted IQ for $180

Nikon’s Coolpix S01 is adorable, and its successor, the S02, is too. The itsy-bitsy point-and-shoot is one of the smallest and lightest zoom-equipped cameras on the market, but it’s hardly the most powerful. That’s to be expected — the Coolpix S02 will fit in the smallest of palms, and its $180 price tag is reasonable given the spec list. There’s a 13.2-megapixel CMOS sensor (compared to a 10MP CCD on last year’s model), a larger 2.7-inch touchscreen, 1080p video (up from 720p) and a 3x 30-90mm f/3.3-5.9 lens. Due to the cam’s small size, there’s no room for a removable battery or expandable storage, so you’ll be limited to the internal cell and fixed 7.3GB for saving images and video clips. Expect the S02 to hit stores later this month in silver, white, pink and blue.

Nikon D5300 And D610 Rumored For Announcement

Nikon D5300 And D610 Rumored For AnnouncementPhotographers looking for entry-level Nikon DSLR cameras might be interested to learn that according to a new rumor by Nikon Rumors, they have learnt that Nikon could be prepping a pair of entry-level DSLRs that will be sort of like a successor to the respective models. Nikon Rumors has learnt that the two cameras in question are the D5300 and the D610. The D5300 is expected to be an improvement over the D5200, although exactly what sort of improvements we are looking at remains unknown, but perhaps WiFi or GPS functionality could be one of them (speculation at this point).

As for the D610, while it is possible that newer features could be introduced over the D600, it is expected to address the sensor oil issue which has apparently been an issue for the camera and has also been why photographers have avoided buying it. Nikon Rumors also adds that this might explain why refurbished prices of the D600 have been on the receiving end of massive discounts, possibly in light of the fact that a successor could be in the works. No word on when Nikon will make their announcement so take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.

Engadget’s back to school guide 2013: digital cameras

Welcome to Engadget’s back to school guide! We predict plenty of campus parties in your near future, which is why we’re tackling digital cameras today. Engadget's back to school guide 2013 digital cameras

You don’t need to pick up a dedicated shooter before you head off to college — your smartphone can likely fill in until you’re able to drop some serious cash on a model that’ll last all four years. Still, you’d certainly be better off with a device that can capture memories at concerts, football games, in the dorm and at parties without hesitation. For that, you’re going to want a camera with serious capabilities, and many don’t come cheap. We’ve sorted our favorites based on model type — there’s something for everyone, and in every price range, too. A point-and-shoot will suit most students just fine, but photography and journalism majors will definitely want to step up to an interchangeable-lens camera, such as a compact mirrorless ILC or a full-size DSLR. Click through for our picks.

Nikon Could Be Working On An Entry-Level DSLR [Rumor]

Nikon Could Be Working On An Entry Level DSLR [Rumor]We had earlier reported that due to poor sales forecast, Nikon will be making some changes to the way they do their business, and one of them is to reconsider their product planning with regards to their Nikon 1 lineup of cameras. However it turns out that there might be more changes that Nikon will be making, and one of them would be to release a new entry-level DSLR camera, which presumably will fall under the company’s D3XXX line.

We’re not sure what the goal of an entry-level DSLR will do for the company, but off the top of our heads we can only imagine that entry-level cameras will be able to attract more customers, which could lead to an increase in sales. It is also possible that due to the shrinking compact camera market that Nikon could be looking towards DSLRs as its main seller. In any case there’s really no telling what Nikon will be announcing, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information, so check back with us in the future for more updates.

Nikon Reconsidering Nikon 1 Product Planning Due To Poor Sales

Nikon Reconsidering Nikon 1 Product Planning Due To Poor SalesCompact camera shipments are down in a recent study, which some have attributed to our smartphones being more than capable of taking amazing photos, thus doing away with the need for compact cameras. Mirrorless cameras and DSLRs on the other hand are in a different category as they offer more professional features that a professional photographer would need, but it seems that even in the mirrorless camera market, Nikon isn’t doing too well.

According to Nikon’s first quarter results, it was found that regional sales targets were missed worldwide, which they too blame as the result of the decline in demand for compact cameras. As a result Nikon has lowered their estimates for sales volume, amount, and operating income for the entire fiscal year, and to make it worse, Nikon has also revealed that they are reconsidering the product planning of the Nikon 1, although we’re not sure what they mean by that – could they mean they are reconsidering putting out more Nikon 1 models, or reconsidering how they should approach the mirrorless market?

    Nikon Coolpix S6600 Unveiled

Nikon Coolpix S6600 Unveiled Here we are with yet another digital camera from the folks over at Nikon, and this time around it would be the Nikon Coolpix S6600 which would come under our scrutiny. The Nikon Coolpix S6600 happens to be a compact camera which delivers high-power zoom and a vari-angle monitor which allows one to shoot from virtually any angle. In fact, it happens to be the first of the Coolpix S-series models that comes with said vari-angle monitor.

Apart from that, it will also come with a Gesture Control function which would enable one to control the camera remotely, letting you snap self-portraits simply by moving your hand. Arriving with a backside illumination CMOS image sensor that has an effective pixel count of 16-megapixels, you end up with very little noise even at high sensitivities, accompanied by a lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function, and a 12x optical zoom NIKKOR lens. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to easily transfer images to smart devices including smartphones and tablets.

Other than that, the Nikon Coolpix S6600 does Full HD video recording that is more or less a given in this day and age, so it is nice to see that function included, too. No idea on how much will it cost when it arrives though. [Press Release]

    Nikon Coolpix L620 Announced

Nikon Coolpix L620 AnnouncedAnother day, another digital camera, and this time around, it would be the Nikon Coolpix L620 that would come under the radar. The Nikon Coolpix L620 happens to be a high-power zoom compact model that will come with a backside illumination CMOS sensor as well as 14x optical zoom NIKKOR lens, ensuring you end up with a device that is capable of capturing of high-quality images at telephoto zoom positions, or perhaps even in dimly lit surroundings.

This 18.1-megapixel shooter is capable of capturing images that exhibit very little noise even at the high sensitivities required if you happen to shoot night landscapes and pictures snapped indoors with very little lighting. There is also a bunch of advanced functions that will accompany the Nikon Coolpix L620, including Target Finding AF, where the user will just need to point the camera at the intended subject, and the camera will be able to identify and focus on the subject immediately. Nice to see that it runs on AA batteries, which are more or less universally available. There is no word on pricing or availability as at press time though. [Press Release]
