Olympus To Focus On Mirrorless For Now, No Plans To Go Back To DSLRs

Olympus To Focus On Mirrorless For Now, No Plans To Go Back To DSLRsIn the world of cameras, there are a few notable players, such as Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Pentax, and Olympus just to name some of them, although admittedly companies such as Nikon and Canon are more prominent when it comes to professional-grade products. That being said, it’s been a while since we have heard any DSLR announcements from Olympus, who a few years ago made waves when they launched their mirrorless PEN camera. Unfortunately it would seem that mirrorless sales seem to be falling in Europe and the US, according to reports, and a recent post by The New York Times suggests that the companies to survive the smartphone camera age are Nikon, Canon, and Sony.

According to an interview with AmateurPhotographer, Olympus’ Toshi Terada was quoted as saying, “Nobody knows 10 years away… once we can get a very nice share [in mirrorless] we may expand the business to DSLR again, but at this moment we are just concentrating on mirrorless and we have no plan to go into DSLR.” While mirrorless cameras are the perfect solution for a more compact DSLR alternative, its price and the heavy investment that photographers need to make into lenses and accessories can be a bit of a turn off, especially when our smartphones are not only more compact, but have the ability to snap great photos and have a host of apps to do post-processing all at once.

However as Terada states, nobody can predict what will happen 10 years down the line, but what do you guys think? Will Olympus eventually go back to making DSLRs?

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Camera Rumored For Announcement Soon

Olympus OM D E M10 Camera Rumored For Announcement SoonEarlier this year we did a review on an Olympus OM-D E-M5 and if the recent rumors are to be believed, there is a good chance that Olympus could be announcing a new OM-D camera in the form of the OM-D E-M10. This is according to a listing by the Indonesian government which shows a registration for a device called the E-M10 by Olympus, so we guess this isn’t so much a rumor but a certainty, although at the moment is unclear as to what sort of camera the E-M10 could be about. Rumored specs include a sensor similar to that of the E-M5, but the E-M10 is expected to have a brand new image processor, but other than that not much else is known about the camera for now.

It has also been speculated that the E-M10 could be unveiled at CES 2014 which is only a couple of weeks away from taking place, so perhaps we will learn more then. Alternatively some have suggested that Olympus might take advantage of the CP+ show which is held not too long after CES to unveil the camera, so that’s a possibility as well. Either way we will be live at CES 2014 ourselves so do check back with us then to see if Olympus has anything in store for us. Until then we will keep our eyes peeled for more information and update you guys accordingly!

The Olympus Stylus 1 delivers DSLR performance in a compact form factor

olympus-stylus-1Olympus has once again redefined the enthusiast compact camera market segment by bringing together a slew of features that are found across its camera range in the new Stylus 1. Specially designed to target semi-pro shooters who want optical brilliance, it comes along with DSLR operation, convenience and portability, being a one-size-fits-all package. Apart from that, the Olympus Stylus 1 will also come with an i.ZUIKO lens which incorporates the outstanding optical quality of the Olympus ZUIKO interchangeable lenses. Right at its heart lies a large 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VI image processor, where it will be accompanied by extra features such as a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) that can also be found on the award-winning Olympus OM-D E-M5 and Wi-Fi connectivity so that you are able to capture and sharing anywhere.

Sporting a newly developed, ultra-slim 10.7x (28–300mm) high-power i.ZUIKO lens, it will deliver constant f2.8 brightness across the zoom range, making it versatile enough to capture wide to telephoto shots while delivering pro-quality stills with beautiful, defocused backgrounds and crisp images, never mind that you are shooting even in low light conditions. The large diameter lens will also come with a powerful, built-in VCM image stabilization mechanism which virtually eliminates camera shake and blur. Not only that, its lens is also able to capture stunning macro shots even from as close as 2” away.

Whenever you are not making use of the lens, it will retract fully into the camera body, placing it behind a removable automatic lens cap, allowing the Stylus 1 to fit into a coat pocket without batting an eyelid. The Stylus 1 will also feature a Fast Touch AF system from the Olympus PEN series for near-instant, precision focusing thanks to the tiltable LCD touchscreen monitor.

Not only that, there is also Full HD video recording capability, while you will also have Art Filters thrown into the mix with bracketing option, five Art Effects and Photo Story, too. The Olympus Stylus 1 will arrive later this December for $699.99 a pop, although there is only one color to choose from – black.

Nikon Df: A DSLR Monster With a Slimmed Down, Old-School Streak

Nikon Df: A DSLR Monster With a Slimmed Down, Old-School Streak

Even at the top echelons of professional photography, the lumbering DSLR is becoming a bore. Smaller shooters with big camera specs are the trend, and with that mandate in mind, Nikon’s releasing the Df. The new DSLR—yes, DSLR, not the full-framed mirrorless monster of rumors—inherits its key guts from Nikon’s flagship D4 in a package that’s just over half the size and weight of that ogre. More than just a relatively compact full-frame camera, the Df looks like a relic from the glory days of film photography—and in a lot of ways, it shoots like one, too.
