Pelican 16-lens array camera arriving in smartphones in 2014

After investing in Pelican’s array camera technology a couple days ago, it looks like Nokia is on the fast track to add the tech to their smartphones by as early as next year. Pelican CEO Chris Pickett has revealed that the company’s 16-lens array camera is currently be tested and will make an appearance on at least one smartphone that will release in 2014.

Engadget speculates that a deal between Nokia and Pelican has already been signed, since a new device can take months of testing before it’s ready to be revealed, which means that a phone with Pelican’s array camera could be close to being done, or even already in its testing phases.

Pelican’s array camera uses a 4×4 grid of 16 lenses total. Each lens in the array captures a single color, which would be either red, blue, or green. This means that photos would have much less noise than traditional camera, since there would be no interference like there would be when capturing all three colors in the same plain.

Plus, since the 16 lens would take a photo of a subject at just slightly different angles, the images would contain a 3D component as well, which can be processed in specialized Pelican software and combine all 16 images into one single JPEG for regular use. This kind of technology would be the first for a smartphone camera, and could possibly put the 41MP Nokia 808 PureView to shame.

Nokia to invest in ‘array’ mobile cameras that use small lenses to capture big images

Nokia plans to invest in a mobile 'array' camera startup called Pelican

If the name “Pelican Imaging” rings a bell, it’s possibly because we covered the company’s array imaging camera prototype back in 2011. The technology uses multiple lenses that are relatively tiny in terms of how much space they take up in a mobile device, but which work together to capture an image of the same quality as a much larger camera — just as array telescopes replace the need for one huge telescope. Now, it appears we weren’t the only ones taking an interest, because Nokia’s investment wing has revealed to Bloomberg that it’s been watching the startup since 2008 and is currently planning to invest in it. Bo Ilsoe, of Nokia Growth Partners, describes Pelican’s technology as being “on the cusp of being commercialized” — so who knows? One day, a future Lumia might house 41 megapixels, image stabilization and the voodoo known as plenoptics. In the meantime, there’s a video after the break which sort of explains how the technology sucks in enough data to allow for focus to be adjusted after a picture is taken — a trick which also sounds rather familiar.

Pelican ProGear iPhone 5 Vault Review

The end-all be-all protector for the iPhone 5 is here – if you want to get rugged with Apple’s current hero phone, the Pelican ProGear Vault is going to be the one you want to pick up. What you’ve got here is a full-cover case made by Pelican to protect you against essentially anything: water, shock, and dust included. You can get it in a variety of color combinations, too!

DSC_0044

With this case you’ve got for your iPhone 5 what Iron Man’s suit is to Tony Stark. You open the case up by removing four steel hex-head machine screws with a screwdriver included in the package to start. From there you can kiss touching the basic build of your iPhone goodbye.

firstlook

After placing the iPhone in the case, you remove two protective slips of plastic from the screen cover and place it over the front of your iPhone. The front casing of the ProGear Vault fits over the top of this cover and holds the device in place just about as tightly as we can imagine with only the human hand pulling in. Allowing this tightness is a bit of elastomeric copolymer rubber that absorbs both shock and impact.

2ndstep

Once you’ve screwed the screws tight, you’ve got a case that’s made from “aluminum and engineering grade polymer materials”, according to Pelican. And though it may appear to be dangerously tough from the images you see above and below, you’ve still got plastic on the outside preventing your smartphone from gouging holds in your wood flooring if and when you drop it.

The home button is made from rubber while the volume up and down, the dial (controlling your mute or screen-rotation switch), and the power button are all made from aircraft-grade aluminum. Your power button and the flaps protecting your Lightning and headphone jacks are all made from rubber, each and every one of these bits precision tuned for high-grade protection while they remain easy to work with.

Both the front and back camera on your iPhone are protected by optical glass so the images you capture are just as high-quality as they’d have been outside the case. You’ve also got water-resistant covers for all microphone and speaker holes so you can continue to capture and hear top-notch audio while you’re protected from the elements.

The entire setup works with a “full-seal” design for defense against “extreme wind-driven snow, rain, and dust” – and it’s all guaranteed for life. Pelican even goes so far as to say that this case “will defend your fragile device better than any other phone cover available.”

inside

The whole case measures in at 5.5 x 3.02 x 0.52 inches and weighs in at 2.72 oz (77.11 g) on its own. You’ll be able to pick this lovely piece of engineering up for $79.95 USD in Dark Gray-Red, White, Green, or Purple (Purple being the color we’ve got here for you to feast your eyes on. Let us know what you think, and grab one quick – straight from Pelican!

Short Version

Bag week is long over, but one of the sport packs we had left over kept grabbing my attention with its hardshell tablet pocket and comfy, ventilated mesh back support.

So I decided to carry around the Pelican ProGear U145 backpack for a few days and have been left mostly satisfied, and a little worn out.

Long Version

Features:

  • Impact-protected sleeve for iPad
  • Plastic, rugged grab handle
  • Water bottle pocket
  • Ventilated mesh back and strap support

Info:

The Pelican ProGear U145…

… An intense, impact-proof backpack. It’s fitted pretty heavily with plastic — both the grab handle and the iPad sleeve have a thick layer of plastic for protection and/or ruggedness — and even looking past the plastic, the backpack is made for adventure with extra rugged materials. It’s not compact or even stylish like some of InCase’s latest products, but it does keep your gadgetry safe and sound.

Buy the Pelican ProGear U145 for…

… the iPad owner that loves his tablet almost as much as he loves adventure. The Pelican ProGear backpack makes sense for the rock climber, scuba diver, hiker, or anyone who likes to bring their gadgetry out into the wilderness. But the modern-day urbanite may see some value here, too, considering how much the average human gets bumped and bruised walking through Manhattan.

Because…

… if you live a rough-and-tumble lifestyle, you’ve already experienced the pain of a cracked screen or dented chassis on a gadget, and don’t ever want to feel that way again. The Pelican ProGear line of backpacks lets you rest assured your expensive tablets, etc. are tucked safely away from the dangers of the outside world.
