Qualcomm takes on AirPlay with AllPlay wireless streaming

Qualcomm debuts AllPlay wireless audio streaming, takes on AirPlay

Looks like the Toq smartwatch isn’t Qualcomm’s only announcement today. At the chipmaker’s Uplinq conference in San Diego, CEO Paul Jacobs also announced AllPlay, a wireless audio streaming tech based on Qualcomm’s Alljoyn software framework. Like Apple’s AirPlay, the technology lets the user stream music from apps to compatible speakers, receivers or other devices. One of AllPlay’s first partners is Rhapsody, and Jon Irwin, president of the music service company, came on stage with Jacobs to demonstrate streaming Rhapsody tunes to several different speakers in the room.

Other AllPlay features include the ability to play different songs on different speakers and you can even have separate volume controls for each. According to Jacobs, AllPlay-compatible audio equipment is coming and an AllPlay SDK should be out before the end of the year. There’s no word yet on which hardware maker is on board. Nevertheless, it does seem like the media streaming space just got a lot more competitive.

Qualcomm Toq Hands-On Review: Mirasol Display Is the Star

Qualcomm Toq Hands On Review: Mirasol Display Is the StarEarlier today, the Qualcomm Toq was announced by Qualcomm’s CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs at Uplinq, and we managed to grab the Toq that Rob Chandhok (Qualcomm SVP) had with him. As you can see, the smart watch design is slightly big, just like other products in this category. At the moment, there is no way around this since the technology is getting just small and low-power enough to enable this type of form factor in any efficient way. There were smart watches before obviously, but this year, we are going to see a discontinuity in terms of usage model for these devices. (more…)

Qualcomm Has a Smartwatch Too and It's the Anti Galaxy Gear

Happy smart watch day! Let’s have a hearty welcome for our newest party guest: Qualcomm. That’s right, the Snapdragon chipmaker will be peddling its own watch—the Toq—direct to consumers. And it’s a bit of a different take than Samsung’s Galaxy Gear.

Qualcomm makes a timely entrance with full-featured Toq Mirasol smartwatch (hands-on video)

Qualcomm makes a timely entrance with fullfeatured Toq Mirasol smartwatch handson video

Qualcomm’s certainly made a name for itself in the mobile chipset space, but the company’s past attempts at creating a fully baked consumer device have not been tremendously successful. Take FLO TV, for example. The pocketable television receiver had potential, but a botched execution left the firm with an embarrassing failure. It’s this legacy that leaves us cautiously optimistic about today’s product introduction, a full-function smartwatch called Toq.

Why is Qualcomm designing, marketing and selling a smartwatch, you ask? The answer lies in a troubled display tech called Mirasol. We got our first good look at this low-power color display technology at CES back in 2010. Since then, Mirasol has had a hard time catching on, with manufacturing costs a likely culprit. We’ve seen new iterations each year, mostly in the form of prototype e-readers, but a decision to shutter production last summer seemingly marked the final straw for the inventive concept. Then, we regained hope following this year’s SID Display Week, where two new high-res panels made their debut, including one in a smartwatch. Curiously, that wearable we saw in May bears little resemblance to the product we’re meeting today, which you’ll find detailed in full after the break.%Gallery-slideshow73561%

Samsung Galaxy Note III with Snapdragon 800 confirmed by KT Corporation

There has been plenty of leaks and speculation regarding the Galaxy Note III. These details have touched on just about all the important aspects of the handset, however one that seems to be an especially popular topic deals with the processor. Samsung is expected to release the Note III with a few processor options and […]

Oppo N1 will have a Snapdragon 800 to go with its swappable camera system (Update: not the N1)

Oppo N1 flashes its Snapdragon 800 as exec leaks logic board pic

Oppo’s N1 smartphone has been sitting on our watch list ever since we first got wind of its strange N-Lens camera add-ons, which will apparently offer a choice of zooms up to 15x. Now we can flesh out another key spec: the Chinese handset will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor, which should more than cope with its equally unusual dual touch inputs and possibly help it to rival other imaging-centric Androids like the Galaxy S4 Zoom and Sony’s upcoming Honami. The HSPA+ Snapdragon processor (MSM8274) was shown on a photo of the N1’s internals that was “leaked” by an Oppo marketing staffer on Sina Weibo — and unless we’re horribly, horribly mistaken, the photo also seems to show a microSD slot to store all those optically stabilized, 16-megapixel images. Barring other significant pseudo-leaks, you can expect the next big N1 update on September 23rd.

Update: Oops! Oppo just reached out to us to say that the N1 doesn’t actually use the Snapdragon 800. Looking back at the original Sina Weibo post, the leakster only said “large screen, flagship” and not “N1,” so perhaps this is actually the rumoured Find 7 instead?
