Panasonic GX7 digital camera leaks in new batch of images

Last week, the Panasonic GX7 leaked in the German magazine Foto, giving us a decent look at the camera, as well as a roster of its specifications, most of which were in line with leaks that had previously surfaced regarding the digital camera. Now the camera has leaked again, this time on the Japanese website Digicame, complete with several new images of the camera.

This latest leak shows the camera from four different angles: the front, top, back, and the back again, this time with the digital view finder raised. It matches the image seen in Foto Magazine, and the specs are likewise the same, again listing 16-megapixels rather than the 18-megapixels that had been reported in earlier leaks.

According to Digicame, the information was provided to them by an individual “who can be trusted.” By all accounts, this is a high-end digital camera, and is being styled after the Four Third L1 camera, giving it a nice retro look. Judging from the pictures, the camera’s body looks fairly slim (sans the lens, obviously), but does have a protruding handhold for gripping.

Says the source of this leak, the Panasonic GX7 features a 16-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor, as well as a 3-inch view finder with 1.04 million dots and the ability to tilt up to 80-degrees. The electronic view finder, meanwhile, is said to be tiltable up to 90 degrees, which is substantiated by the last picture in the batch. Both this leak and the last claims the EVF has 2.76 million dots.

Videos can be recorded in up to full 1920 x 1080/60p, while the shutter speed goes up to a fast 1/8000, and the ISO up to 25,600. As far as software goes, there’s said to be 22 filters of some sort, as well as panorama and a silent mode for candid image taking. Again we’re hearing that the camera has on-sensor stablization, as well as WiFi and NFC.

Zynga reportedly had three top executives resign in July

It is no secret that Zynga, maker of several popular Facebook games, has been having considerable financial trouble over the past months. Earlier this month, Microsoft’s Don Mattrick went on to become the company’s CEO, and following this three top executives have resigned from their position. The information comes from sources said to be familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg.

zynga

According to these sources, the executives who retired are Senior Vice President of Games John Osvald, Vice President of Zynga’s Casino Division Jesse Janosov, and Vice President of Games Nathan Etter. As Bloomberg pointed out, Mr. Etter has since updated his LinkedIn profile to show his current job as being with Disney’s interactive division.

If true, this would be the latest in a long line of high-level employees who have left Zynga since late 2011, an unfortunate move for the company that further signifies its various financial trouble. Such is the result of a steady decline in demand for its games, of which includes the not-as-popular-as-they-used-to-be Mafia Wars and FarmVille.

The story of Zynga’s troubles began a bit after it made its initial public offering in December of 2011. At its top, the company was the maker whose games were most in demand on Facebook, something that helped prompt a massive $1 billion IPO. Since that time, other companies have moved in with their own games, of which several are now among the top most played on the social network.

In a somewhat bitter twist of irony, several of the workers who left Zynga have moved on to create their own online game companies that now compete with their former employer, among them being TapZen and JuiceBox Games. It is yet to be seen whether Mattrick will turn the company around, but if the rumor is true, it would seem at least three executives weren’t confident that would happen.

Apple’s Bob Mansfield latest “special projects” mystery shake-up

Apple has quietly reshuffled its executive team once again, with senior vice president of technologies Bob Mansfield discretely being removed from the executive profiles page, with Apple cryptically saying only that he would be instead working on “special projects”. Speculation began once the missing profile was first spotted that Mansfield had been sidelined after struggling to cut Apple’s dependence on Samsung, but instead it appears that the exec is being repositioned to work on another mysterious project as the firm looks to follow up the best-selling iPhone and iPad.

apple_bob_mansfield

“Bob is no longer going to be on Apple’s executive team, but will remain at Apple working on special projects reporting to [CEO] Tim [Cook]” Apple spokesperson Steve Dowling confirmed to AllThingsD. The sudden shift had led to comparisons with Scott Forstall’s exit from Apple, announced last October, where the software chief was supposedly cut out over arguments around which direction to take iOS.

Not so in the case of Mansfield, however, at least according to those familiar with Apple’s internal politics. Sources speaking to Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber insist that “working on special projects” is exactly what Mansfield will be doing, and that there’s “nothing punitive” about the shift in role.

“Mansfield is well-liked at all levels within the company” Gruber writes, “and truly is working on special projects (read: new products). No euphemism there.”

Exactly what those special projects might be is unknown, which is of course just how Apple likes it. The former hardware chief isn’t the first to be so employed in recent weeks, however; earlier in March, Apple installed former Yves St Laurent Group CEO Paul Deneve as vice president of “special projects”.

At the time, it was widely suggested that Deneve’s role would be – at least in part – in making the much-rumored iWatch sufficiently appealing to timepiece enthusiasts rather than just geeks, something so far smartwatches like Pebble have struggled to achieve.

That Apple is wheeling in the big guns to take on backroom development of new products should come as little surprise. The company currently has a relatively comprehensive range – desktop, notebook, tablet, phone, media player – with few obvious gaps to it, and yet faces a voracious audience of investors, enthusiasts, and commentators demanding The Next Big Thing. Figuring out exactly what that might be will take some work, without falling into the trap of making it too niche for the sort of broad market appeal Apple prefers.

OPPO N-Lens smart cameras to take on Samsung’s Android snappers

OPPO will take on Samsung’s Galaxy Camera with the new OPPO N-Lens range, the company has confirmed, with what are expected to be new Android-based smart snappers to challenge traditional point-and-shoots. The N-Lens line-up will be the “most important flagship series for Oppo going forward” the Chinese company told Engadget, as well as confirming there’d be cellular connectivity.

oppo_find_5_camera

Exactly what OS the OPPO cameras will use is unclear, though the most likely option is Android given the company has some experience using Google’s platform. Beyond that, the only other tidbit is chatter of both a high-resolution sensor and strong low-light performance in a previous Android Authority leak.

So-called smart cameras have taken a number of different approaches in recent months. The Samsung Galaxy Camera, for instance, effectively replaced the in-house OS in one of Samsung’s existing cameras with Android and paired it with an LTE radio for data-only use; however, the more recent Galaxy S4 Zoom – which we reviewed earlier this month – attempted to blur the lines a little more between camera and phone, including both an optical zoom and voice call support.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy NX interchangeable lens camera sticks to the original Galaxy Camera pattern, though with more ambitious optics.

Right now, it seems OPPO is viewing the N-Lens range as cameras first, which might indicate connectivity limited to getting photos off the device and shared on social networking services. The company has already experimented with high-resolution sensors on phones, putting a 13-megapixel CMOS into the OPPO Find 5 for instance.

Beyond that, we don’t know pricing or availability for the N-Lens, though it’s possible OPPO could aim for an IFA 2013 launch in a few months time.

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 ‘Treasure Tag’ accessory for Lumias

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 'Treasure Tag' accessory for Lumias

Nokia is planning to release a Bluetooth accessory for its Lumia lineup called the “Treasure Tag,” according to various sources. A report from The Verge tallies with a previous mention on Yahoo’s message boards that names the tag, which could be a reason Nokia’s adding Bluetooth 4.0 and LE support to Lumias via the impending Amber update. Apparently, the tag features NFC for easy pairing and can be set up and tracked using a Windows Phone 8 app that’ll incorporate Nokia’s LiveSight AR tech. It’s also said that a button on the Treasure Tag will reveal the location of a misplaced phone using an audible notification, if it’s in range of the accessory. It could look like the above diagram, is allegedly launching in “the coming weeks,” and is thought to be one of several planned accessories that’ll make use of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard.

Samsung reportedly crafting 10- and 12.2-inch tablets with 2,560 x 1,600 displays

Samsung reportedly crafting 10- and 12.2-inch tablets with 2,560 x 1,600 displays

Samsung already has tablets on the market bearing almost any display size that might interest you. If a tweet from @evleaks is to be believed, Sammy has yet more slates in the pipeline, including its biggest one yet. Allegedly, the unannounced SM-P900 tablet carries a 12.2-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 screen (same res as the Nexus 10), an Exynos 5 Octa heart, and an S-Pen that would make it part of the Note family. Another device, known as the SM-P600, is said to cram that same resolution into a 10-inch display, and switches Samsung’s chip for a Snapdragon 800. We’d be more willing to buy the rumor if there were pics to back it up, but it’s rare for the source to be completely off the mark. Could we see these new tablets at IFA alongside a trio of Galaxy Note III models? Join us in a little under a month for the Samsung edition of Mythbusters.

A Plastic iPhone Called The 5C May Really Be On Its Way

A Plastic iPhone Called The 5C May Really Be On Its Way

This image from Chinese blog WeiPhone looks like a bunch of Apple packaging in a bin. But folks it’s so much more! Oh, no, actually that’s exactly what it is. No one has been able to legitimize the photo yet, and it could just show some knockoff packaging, but the nomenclature makes sense at least. If the aluminum body upgrade that seems probable for September/October is called the 5S, a cheaper plastic model (also heavily rumored) could be called the 5C where C stands for "color". . . or something.

iPhone 5C Packaging Spotted in China: Proof a Cheaper iPhone is Coming?

For months there have been rumors that Apple will release a less expensive version of the iPhone for the masses – especially in parts of the world where the current gen iPhone is considered too expensive. Images have leaked of colorful, possibly plastic-cased iPhone components, and now we have what appears to be a product name – the iPhone 5C.

iphone 5c packaging

This tub of plastic packaging clearly labeled “iPhone 5C” and adorned with the Apple logo was spotted in China and posted on the WeiPhone forums. While they definitely could be boxes for some cheap knock-off iPhones, I’m going to go out on a limb and say this looks legit, and the plastic construction of the packaging would go well with the rumored less-expensive iPhone. Now what the “C” stands for is anyone’s guess – perhaps it stands for “cheap” but I don’t think so. It’s more likely to stand for “colors,” IMHO.

Regardless of the veracity of this image, I don’t think we’ll be waiting too much longer to see the next iPhones emerge from Apple. All signs point to a September or October reveal of both an inexpensive model and an updated iPhone 5, rumored to be called the iPhone 5S – though I’d really love for a surprise reveal of an iPhone 6.

New iPhones And iPad To Arrive This September 6 (Rumor)

New iPhones And iPad To Arrive This September 6 (Rumor)If you are an iPhone watcher (someone who is always on the lookout as to when the next generation iPhone is going to be released or unveiled), then you might want to mark this particular date down on your calendar – September 6th. Now that we are already coming to the end of July, there is a chance that September is when the new iPhone, as well as the purported iPhone Lite (a budget-oriented iPhone), is tipped to be revealed to the masses.

Why September? That is normally the traditional time where Apple rolls out new devices to the world, in addition to CEO Tim Cook having mentioned that new devices would arrive sometime in “the fall”, which September falls squarely into. Of course, who are we to deny the very present and real possibility of the iPad being announced on the same date as well? Are you looking forward to see whether September 6th will be the date where history is made once again? Or does the date not matter to you much, as long as Apple does what they do best – deliver shiny new products that are easy to use and highly desirable.

MacBook Pro Haswell refresh tipped for October arrival

The MacBook Air has already seen its glory day with a Haswell upgrade last month at WWDC 2013, but the MacBook Pro was disappointingly skipped over and still has yet to get the new chips. However, it’s reported that we may see new MacBook Pros come our way in October during Apple’s annual fall event.

MacBook-pro-13-retina-11-macbook-pro-13-retina--580x376

According to a report from the China Times, says that refreshed MacBook Pros will make an appearance in October, based on reports from sources in Apple’s supply chain. Furthermore, the report suggests that prices will remain the same for the upgraded MacBook Pros, which has been an ongoing trend for Apple.

Intel’s new Haswell processors obviously offer faster speeds than the previous generation, but they also provide lower power consumption, which reduces the juice needed from the battery. We’ve already played around with the new Haswell-equipped MacBook Air, and it certainly boasts quite the battery-life improvement. The MacBook Pros should deliver similar results.

The new Haswell chips also come with support for 4K displays, which not come in handy now, seeing as how Apple doesn’t currently have any 4K products, but it certainly could come in handy down the line.

In any case, while today’s report of an October launch is merely just a prediction based on Apple supply-chain status, that seems like a good bet overall. Apple usually holds an event every fall to announce new products, and this coming fall could be a big one, with rumors of a new iPhone(s), iPad(s), and now MacBook Pros.
