Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy S5 just went on sale today, and Verizon users can grab it for $100 from Amazon. Based on the Gizmodo review
Both HTC and Samsung have already unveiled and released their 2014 flagship smartphones, HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5. There’s a major difference between both devices. HTC opted for an all metal build whereas Samsung stuck with plastic. Leaked internal documents recently revealed that the Taiwan based company believes its flagship is a better choice simply because of the metal build. A new report claims today that both companies might now be considering alternative build materials for their flagships to ensure that they perform well in various markets.
The report comes from Digitimes, a Taiwanese trade publication, which has a hit or miss track record. Citing sources, the report claims that HTC might offer a plastic variant of the One M8, whereas Samsung might introduced a variant of Galaxy S5 that has an all metal build. It has already been long rumored that Samsung is working on a “premium” variant of the Galaxy S5, but nothing has materialized as yet.
The obvious advantage for HTC is price. It will be able to offer the smartphone at a cheaper price than its rival. This might give HTC One M8 sales a boost in Asian markets, where the off contract price of the flagship is expected to fall from $700-800 for the metal variant to $400-500 for the plastic one.
There has been no confirmation as yet about these plans from either company, so a grain of salt is advised.
