Opera 10 Gets Inline Spell Checking and More

This article was written on December 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

opera 10.pngI’ve been waiting to see what Opera had in store for us in version 10, and it looks like everyone is finally getting a peak. In fact I’m a bit surprised by what has been revealed so far, but in a good way. For awhile it seemed like other browsers were trying to find their own ways to adopt features that were first introduced in Opera, but the opposite never really happened. By that I mean Opera never really went after the handy features that other browsers were introducing.

What features am I talking about? Inline spell checking and auto-updating. Last year I covered some of the things that I really wanted to see included in future versions of Opera, and those two things were definitely on my list. Opera 10 Alpha 1 is the first version of their browser to incorporate these features.

Here are some of the other highlights in this release:

  • Presto 2.2 Rendering Engine
  • Performance boost
  • 100/100 and pixel-perfect on the Acid3 test
  • Opera Mail improvements, including rich text composition and delete after X days
  • Widget Improvements on Linux

The million dollar question is whether Opera is still doing enough to attract new users, or whether they’re fighting a losing battle? I found Opera 10 to be more responsive than any of the other browsers, and the pages felt like they were displayed faster as well. Does that mean I’m going to make it my primary browser? I’ve really become accustomed to the extensions that Firefox has to offer though, and it would be hard for me to use only Opera without some of that important functionality.

What do you think about Opera? Did you expect more from Opera 10? Guess we’ll have to wait and see whether they have a few more tricks up their sleeve.

Get Opera 10 Alpha 1 for Windows, Mac or Linux
Thanks Cody!

Blokify 3D Modeling App for iOS: Minecraft Without Steve

There’s already a Minecraft port for iOS devices, but a new iOS app called Blokify takes the addictive building mechanic of Mojang’s hit game and makes it much easier to get into. Blokify uses simple touch controls and easy access to different cubes, without the hassles of keeping an avatar alive.

blokify 3d modeling app for iphone ipad 620x232magnify

Blokify was designed to be 3D modeling software for kids. First of all, its blocks are organized by themes. The app comes with a castle-themed set of blocks, with two other types – spaceships and pirates – available as optional purchases. It’s also intentionally bare of tools. Building consists of selecting and placing blocks – no more, no less. Users can then share their apps to other Blokify users. Even better, users can order a 3D printed replica right from the app itself.

According to Engadget, Blokify uses Cubify for print orders. But if you have access to a 3D printer, you can also export the 3D model from the app so you can print it yourself.

Blokify is free and is available from the App Store.

Firefox 2 Visual Refresh Coming Very Soon

Firefox 2 Visual Refresh Coming Very Soon

Someone has already gone through a lot of trouble to get the new Firefox 2 Visual Refresh theme implemented into their browser and it looks like we should all be able to get it very soon. Mozilla has worked out a lot of the details and smoothed it out so that we will be able to experience a new “glassy” look to Firefox 2. Even though I really like the new theme and think it looks great there will probably be several people that would rather stick with the old one. For that reason I hope they keep both themes in Firefox so that the choice is left to the user as to which one to chose. This new theme will probably be implemented into a build today so hang tight and I will let everyone know when you can try it out.

CyberNotes: Shortcut to Close Multiple Programs

This article was written on January 31, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Tutorial Thursday

A couple of weeks we wrote up a tutorial on how to create a single batch file that would simultaneously launch several different applications. It’s a handy little trick that many people found useful because they are frequently running the same programs on their computer. For example, when you start your computer you might open a browser, media player, and document editor. Instead of clicking on each of those shortcuts individually you can create a single batch file that will do the dirty work.

In the comments of that article “ExitRitual” asked a great question. He was wondering if it would be possible to do the same thing, but for closing programs. This would come in handy if, for example, you were getting ready to play a computer game. Most people shutdown a majority of the running applications to ensure that the game runs smoothly, and it can all be done in a single batch file.

We’ve shown how to do something similar in the past, but we were using a free third-party program because it was a little more powerful for the task at hand. This time around we’re going to use a command line option that is built-in to Windows.

–Instructions–

  1. Open Notepad (Start Menu -> Accessories -> Notepad):
    Notepad
  2. Now you need to find the filename of the programs you want to close. I believe the best way to do this is to open up the Task Manager. Do this by right-clicking on the Taskbar and choosing the Task Manager option. Then look for the filename of the program you want to close.
    Task Manager Image Name
  3. Now you’ll need to use the taskkill command in Notepad, along with the filename(s) that you just grabbed in the previous step. Each command will look like this:

    taskkill /im firefox.exe

Where firefox.exe is the filename of the program you want to close. Put each of these commands on a separate line like this:
    Batch Close

  4. Save it as a .BAT file by manually entering in the extension at the end of the file name.
    Save Batch File
  5. Double-click on the new file that you just created to test out the results. Each program listed will be closed in a friendly fashion instead of being shutdown forcefully.

The batch file will be smart enough to skip over any applications that are currently not running. So throw all of those extra programs in the batch file, and don’t forget to include things that might be running the the System Tray.

CyberNotes: All about Steve Ballmer

This article was written on April 14, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Microsoft Monday

When you hear the word Microsoft, who do you associate with it? For myself, I automatically think Bill Gates. Without Bill Gates there wouldn’t be Microsoft but there’s another person who, at this point is just as important as Bill Gates. His name is Steven Ballmer and while you’ve probably heard his name used here or there (especially with this whole acquisition thing going on with Yahoo), you probably don’t know a whole lot about him. Today we thought we’d give you a better idea of who Steve Ballmer is and what his role is at Microsoft. While he became CEO of Microsoft in January of 2000 and he certainly knows business, he also has a pretty wild and crazy side which we’ll talk about as well.

To get started on his early years, let’s first take a look at a commercial that aired a long time ago in which Ballmer was trying to sell Windows 1.0 (which launched in 1985). It’ll give you a good idea of what a quirky guy he can be.

The Early Days…

Steve Ballmer originally joined Microsoft back in 1980 before the launch of Windows 1.0.  At the time, Bill Gates brought him on to be the very first business manager of the company. Since then he’s had roles like manager of operation, manager of operating systems development, and manager of sales and support. In 1998 he was promoted to President and then finally in January of 200, he was named CEO.

Before Ballmer joined Microsoft…

  • he was born March 24, 1956
  • grew up near Detroit Michigan
  • in 1977 he graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics
  • before starting at Microsoft, he dropped out from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business

I Love this Company…

Steve Ballmer has a love for Microsoft that no one else has. It’s a love strong enough to get him to “go crazy” on the stage before a presentation given to Microsoft employees. The way he danced across the stage in the video below is absolutely crazy and eventually the video was titled “Dance Monkeyboy.”

In the comments for this video on YouTube, I noticed someone say “I’d dance like that too if I was rich like him” which leads us to our next topic… money.

Ranked the 43rd Richest Person…

The Forbes 2008 World’s Richest People list has come out and Ballmer is ranked 43rd on that list with an estimated wealth of $15 billion.

Here are some interesting facts about his cash compensation for Microsoft’s Fiscal Year ending June 2007:

  • Annual salary was $620,000
  • Bonus for FY 2007 was $650,000
  • $9,821 was earned through stock options
  • Total annual cash income was around $1,270,000

About his Family…

Ballmer’s Dad was originally from Switzerland but immigrated to the United States when he was 23. In 2006, Steve received an honorary citizenship of Lausen, Switzerland where is dad was originally from.

Like Gates, Ballmer met his wife at Microsoft.  She was working in the public relations department and they eventually married and have three children.

His Office…

I found this picture posted on the website for The New York Times.  Apparently this is what his office looks like…

ballmers office

For the CEO of Microsoft, his office is on the small side or “low-key”, wouldn’t you say? Although, he’s probably hardly in the office to make it worth giving him a larger one.

Other Interesting Facts…

  • As CEO, Ballmer handles finances of the company
  • He’s crazy about developers as you’ll see in the video below…
  • Quoting from Wikipedia… “On March 6, 2008 Seattle’s Mayor announced that a local ownership group involving Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a “game changing” commitment to invest $150 million in cash towards a $300 million renovation of Key Arena and are ready to purchase the Seattle Supersonics in order to keep them in the City of Seattle. [13] Ballmer would join fellow Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen (owner of the Portland Trailblazers) as an NBA owner.”

Developers, Developers, Developers…

Steve Ballmer has a lot of love for Developers. The video below is one of the most popular ones of him on YouTube:

Developers Part 2

At Mix 08′ this year, an audience member requested that Ballmer show some love for web developers in particular, since he’s always talking about “developers.” This is part 2:

Wrapping it up…

One of Ballmer’s most recent interviews with Guy Kawasaki at Mix 08′ really shows off his personality and what he really thinks of the MacBook Air. Ryan and I both watched the entire interview and really enjoyed it, but the segment about the MacBook Air and Vista was probably the best part. Take a look for yourself:

After putting together this article about Steve Ballmer, we realized just what a dedicated guy he is to Microsoft. We also realized that he’s done a ton of work for the company. Within the next year as Bill Gates completes his transition away from Microsoft, we’ll probably be seeing and hearing even more from Ballmer who undoubtedly gives some pretty energetic presentations and life to the company.

Download Paint.NET 3.0 Beta 1

This article was written on December 01, 2006 by CyberNet.

Paint.NET 3 Beta 1

Beta 1 of Paint.NET 3 is now available for download and I highly recommend this amazing image editing tool. At this point Paint.NET 3 is feature complete and over the next two months they will be working solely on bug fixes. Here is what’s new in this version:

  • New effect: Clouds
  • New menu command: Edit->Fill Selection (shortcut key: Backspace). This will fill any selected area with the primary color.
  • New toolbar item / hotkey: The brush size may be manipulated with +/- buttons in the toolbar. Hotkeys for this are [ and ], and you may hold Ctrl to increment or decrement by 5.
  • New translations: They are not complete yet, and in fact some have just been started. They are mostly in place right now in order to get the code correct: Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portugese, and Spanish. You will have the ability to choose one of these languages during installation, and from the Help->Language menu, but the text will still be either mostly or completely English. Complete translations will be finished by February.
  • Added left-handed shortcut keys for Cut (Shift+Del), Copy (Ctrl+Ins), Paste (Shift+Ins)
  • Upper-left coordinate of selection is now displayed in the status bar
  • When moving text with the Text tool, the anchor point coordinate is now displayed in the status bar

One thing I can’t get over is that Microsoft doesn’t include this program with Windows. They definitely shouldn’t replace the original version of Paint because I know some people that use it simply because there isn’t a lot of buttons to confuse them, but power users would love to see Paint.NET integrated with Windows. Maybe they could just offer a menu command to switch between “advanced” and “basic” modes?

I have been using this program for several months now and would hate not having it. I am also an avid Photoshop user but I find myself using Paint.NET more than Photoshop because it loads so quickly and lets me get my stuff done fast. They obviously don’t have as many features as Photoshop nor a comparable number of filters but I hardly use them anyway. Congrats to the Paint.NET team because they have done an amazing job on this product!

Note: This version does expire December 31 but that is because a newer version will be out before then.

What If Operating Systems Were Religions?

Yesterday, after writing my way past the notional halfway point (both of the current novel manuscript, and of the trilogy it’s the middle volume of), I went and overindulged in food and drink with friends.
