Tracking Down Great Software For You!

I have hundreds of feeds that I follow everyday and I don’t like the slow update frequency of many online feed readers, such as Bloglines. On my journey for finding the best feed reader I came across software like FeedDemon and Flock but neither felt like it was what I wanted. I eventually came across GreatNews which is currently being offered for free because it is in Beta testing.

Great News Feed Reader

I love the newspaper style reading with the two-columns and it does just that! You can also customize the look using custom CSS templates or you can use one of the built-in templates. I like the default style the best but they also have a style to make it look like the Sage RSS Reader for Firefox. One of the default templates is sure to please you.

Great News Feed Reader

It isn’t just about the looks…we need functionality! Boy does GreatNews have that! I’m able to setup a keyword watch for articles that contain “Google” in them and it will highlight them in yellow for me. If you are a Bloglines user then you can setup GreatNews to synchronize with your account so that you have a great news reader at home but you can still read your news wherever you are. Let’s not forget about the built-in tabbed browser which makes it easy to open the links without switching between the feed reader and a browser! If you have questions about the software then check out the very active forums where you can find most of your answers. They haven’t determined how they will charge for the software when it gets released, but they are pondering the thought of having a free version and a professional version. The professional version would support things like podcasts but will cost around $30. However, there is no need to think about dollar signs now because you can test it out for free!

Google Confirms Its Android Camera App Is About to Get Way Better

Earlier this month, a batch of comments in Android source code hinted that the camera app was about to get a shot in the arm. Now, Google has confirmed that’s the case.

Microsoft: Just two Windows versions is the goal

Microsoft is aiming to cut Windows confusion by trimming its three-strong OS line-up for mobile devices to tow, streamlining some combination of Windows Phone, Windows RT, and full Windows. Windows RT, the little-loved version of Windows 8 that Microsoft cooked up for ARM-based tablets, was insufficiently differentiated from full Windows, Julie Larson-Green, Executive Vice President […]

Killzone: Shadow Fall Review

As one of the first PlayStation 4 exclusive launch-titles, and the only first-person shooter on that short list, Killzone: Shadow Fall had some high expectations to live up to. What we saw in previous installments of this series was a gritty bit of darkness, all-out war and killing with only the lights of the enemy’s […]

Spotify Connect local streaming comes to Android

A couple of months ago, Spotify Connect was announced for iOS — a feature that allows you to wirelessly control (via your home WiFi network) music playing on Connect-compatible speakers with your phone. Good news for Spotify users with Premium accounts and Android devices today, as their version of the app has now been endowed with all of Connect’s powers. Of course, the number of devices currently compatible with the feature is fairly slim, as Pioneer and Bang and Olufsen are Spotify’s only official partners. But, ’tis the season and there are some quality, if pricey, Connect-enabled speakers and receivers to be had — remember, kids, Santa only brings you what you ask for.

Fixes coming for Skype Messaging on Windows Phone; improved device syncing also in the works

If you’ve used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you’ve dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft’s move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.

Once the hiccups are fixed, users can expect syncing across devices to avoid any random bursts of old, already-read messages. Kunins also said that continuous notifications will run only on the device you’re currently using, as opposed to every Skype-running gadget you own. Few things are more headache-inducing than five different devices ringing at once, after all. Finally, Kunins hinted that the Skype app for Windows 8.1 will have “a lot of fun things” to offer. Stay tuned.

Firefox Gets Its Television Debut

This article was written on December 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox 2 TV

Congratulations to Firefox for having its television debut earlier this week. Their are four user-created commercials that Mozilla is airing in the San Francisco and Boston areas and Mozilla Links has a listing of the times that the commercials will air (which apparently ends tonight).

At the end of the commercial users are presented with a hyperlink, firefox.com/tv, to visit that offers a download link for the browser along with the opportunity to watch the four commercials. You might notice that the URL I hyperlinked on the firefox.com/tv is a little different because users visiting that URL are forwarded to another address, and that address is the one that I hyperlinked to. That way it will help Mozilla keep accurate stats as to who is really coming to the site from the commercial.

I am really excited that Firefox is looking at other methods of advertising even though the word-of-mouth has brought them millions and millions of users. It will surely help in brand recognition so that when someone hears Firefox they may think “oh yeah, I saw that on a commercial once.” Not only that, but it is awesome that the commercials being aired are all created by fans of the browser and not by an outside company…making this even more memorable.

Congratulations to Mozilla and Firefox for this big milestone!

Download Portable Flock 0.7.1 Here

It was about one-week ago when I posted an article regarding the PhotoBucket Flock and Max had a very good question. He wondered if there was any way that I could make a Portable Flock and that got me thinking. Flock is based off of Firefox so I saw no reason why I shouldn’t be able to get Flock to work with it.

I want to start by saying that this whole thing wouldn’t be possible without the great work that John Haller has done on Portable Firefox. I watch his news quite closely and his newest version of Portable Firefox, when it gets released, will have the ability to update itself. Right now Portable Firefox cannot download the partial updates but that will soon be a thing of the past. So I just wanted to say thanks to John for making this Portable Flock possible!

It took a little editing and very small code modifications (because John designed Portable Firefox so well that it was easy to modify) but I got it to work. Now I don’t use Flock on a daily basis so I am not sure about the stability but it should satisfy the needs of most people out there. I will admit that when Flock first came out I never gave it much of a chance, but after creating this Portable version and using it for a few hours I have to say it is extremely sweet! In one of my posts Ryan Williams and I were having a discussion about integrated feed readers and how great Firefox would be if it had one. Well, he was definitely right when he said “Flock is a great example of how RSS can work beautifully in a browser”. So that more people can see just how nice the RSS reader is I put this Portable version together. You can now try it out and see if it is really right for your purposes without even needing to install it. Heck, you can even throw this on your USB drive and carry it with you which would be like having Flock-On-The-Go 😀 .

These are the instructions that you need to use the Portable Flock. All you have to do is download the Portable Flock file below. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file PortableFlock.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Flock! The profile is kept with the PortableFlock folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!

I know that John Haller has run into trademark issues in the past with Mozilla, and if Flock contacts me to remove this file I will gladly do so. I can only imagine that it would help them out because they will receive their revenue from the search bar and this might increase the number of users. Also, I normally ZIP up the files but when I zipped up the file it was still over 10MB! To bring the size down I compressed it using RAR which brought it down to 8.32MB, man what a difference.

Okay, you can download it now:

OneNote for Windows 8.1 adds Camera Scan and image OCR

Microsoft’s OneNote for Windows 8.1 has seen a considerable update, adding the ability to “scan” a document or image using a tablet’s camera, apply optical character recognition to search through text, and make better use of digital ink. The new app, available today, takes on Evernote with its new Camera Scan feature, which automatically crops, […]

OneNote for Windows 8.1 now uses optical character recognition to search scanned images

It’s been about four months since the OneNote app for Windows received a significant update. Today, though, Microsoft is adding several key features, with the biggest being the ability to scan images and then search them using keywords. This new Camera Scan feature, as it’s called, automatically crops and rotates photos, removing shadows and sharpening the image where necessary. Then, it uses optical character recognition (OCR) to search for words in scanned images, making it easy to find those meetings notes you took the other day.

Additionally, the update now allows you to save things using the Share Charm. And if you want a shot of the entire screen (and not just a specific item, like a recipe), you can use the Share Charm in a Windows app and then select” screenshot” from the Share Charm drop-down. (In desktop mode, screenshots are already the standard option.) Finally, the app now has both a full-screen view and a “Recent Notes” option, which shows all your notes in the order you last used them, regardless of whether you were viewing them on Windows, iOS or Android. These are accompanied by short previews, making it easier to zero in on what you want. And that about sums it up — to get the latest version, hit up the download link below.%Gallery-slideshow123034%
