CyberNotes: Speed Up Photoshop And Acrobat

Time Saving Tuesday

Two of Adobe’s most popular applications, Photoshop and Acrobat, take disappointingly long to load up. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could cut the loading time down? For me Photoshop would take almost 25 seconds to startup and Acrobat was also very close to that. It was time to trim down some plug-ins. The software I use below is free from AcroPDF Systems and does not require installation.

First, we’ll start with Photoshop. I frequently use this application for performing common photo editing tasks. I don’t need all of the “above and beyond” plug-ins that the professionals need, well, I definitely don’t need them everyday. Here is what you have to do ( compatible with Adobe Photoshop versions 3 through 8 ):

  1. Download Photoshop Speed-Up.
  2. Run the photosu.exe executable (no installation needed).
  3. Enter in the destination of your Photoshop installation. Mine was C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2.
    Photoshop Directory

  4. Select your options from this screen. I just chose the default options because if you ever need to go back you can just select the “Restore” option.
    Photoshop Settings

  5. Enjoy your faster Photoshop! Make sure you keep the photosu.exe file around in case you need to restore your Photoshop plug-ins. I just stuck the file in my Photoshop installation directory so that I wouldn’t lose it.

If you thought that was great then you will love what the same kind of software can do for Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. It can remove the advertisement banner, disable updates, disable plug-ins, hide the splash screen, and more. You get to pick and choose which items you do or don’t want it to change. Just like the Photoshop tweak above this one is just a few steps long ( compatible with Adobe Acrobat 3 to 7 and Adobe Reader 6 to 7 ):

  1. Download PDF Speed-Up.
  2. Run the pdfsu.exe executable (no installation needed).
  3. Enter in the destination of your Adobe Acrobat or Reader installation. Mine was C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0.
    PDF Directory

  4. There are a lot of different options that you can pick for this one so look through them all to see which ones sound good and which ones you would rather leave.
    PDF Settings

  5. Enjoy your faster Adobe Acrobat or Reader! Make sure you keep the pdfsu.exe file around in case you need to restore any of the settings. I put it in my Acrobat installation directory just like I did for the Photoshop Optimizer above.

Well, I hope that really saves you some time when you are starting up your Adobe software. Photoshop now starts up for me in less than 5 seconds which means it is about 80% faster than before. If I ever find out that I need the plug-ins then I am just a few clicks away from restoring the plug-ins and features I disabled.

Freespire 2.0 = Ubuntu 7.04 with Proprietary Software & CNR

Freespire 2.0 was just released today, and it brings a lot of great things to the table. For starters it uses Ubuntu 7.04 as its baseline, and was built off of that. So you get the benefits of using Ubuntu, but a lot of the proprietary software, drivers, and codecs since it is created by Freespire!

I couldn’t have said it better than CNet when they expressed their feelings on the inclusion of proprietary software:

Think of it like adding sugar-free Splenda to your morning coffee, only to find there’s actually a dash of sugar in the powdery substance to make it taste better.

Here are some of the benefits of using Freespire 2.0:

  1. CNR Plugin provides free one-click access to thousands of open source applications, as well as options for legally licensed DVD playback software, Sun’s StarOffice, Parallels Workstation, Win4Lin, CodeWeaver’s Crossover Office, TransGaming’s Cedega, commercial games and many more.
  2. KDE is added for an easier-to-use and more comfortable interface, with a familiar look & feel for Apple Mac and Microsoft Windows users.
  3. Enhanced applications and features are added for enhanced usability and ease of use, modifying software applications like Firefox and Thunderbird, along with adding Linspire-sponsored open source software like Nvu, Lsongs and Lphoto.
  4. Proprietary software is added when necessary, like Java, Flash and Adobe Acrobat, to provide overall increased interoperability.
  5. Proprietary codecs are added to expand multimedia compatibility and provide a superior overall experience so users can listen to MP3 files, play Windows Media files, and much more.
  6. Proprietary drivers are added to expand hardware compatibility and provide optimum 3D graphic card support, better WiFi support, and more.

It’s extremely nice that Freespire includes things like Java, Flash, and Adobe Acrobat so that you don’t have to worry about downloading it. Not to mention that you get to use the Click-N-Run (CNR) service for free, which makes installing, updating, and uninstalling applications a one-click process.

I can’t wait to try this out myself, and I could easily see it becoming my choice of Linux distributions since it takes out a lot of the guesswork. The download site that they have setup only supports 100 simultaneous users, and it has been pretty saturated with requests all day. So if you’re like me you’ll just want to jump on the Torrent to get it.

Creating a Log File in Notepad

This article was written on September 08, 2011 by CyberNet.

Notepad log file

Notepad (in Windows) has a unique feature that a lot of people don’t know about. If you open a file in Notepad where the first line contains “.LOG” you will automatically see the current time and date appended to the end of the file. Here is how it works:

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Type .LOG on the first line, and press ENTER to go to the next line.
  3. Save the file (you can save it with any file extension).
  4. Each time you open the file you’ll see the time/date appended on a new line, and your cursor will automatically be placed on the line following the time/date.

Why would something like this be useful? I’ve used it in the past when I’ve need to keep a running log of events that I had to manually track. That way whenever something would happen that I needed to log I’d just open the text file, type what I needed, save it, and close it. It may not necessarily be the most elegant solution for something like this, but it works without the need for any third-party apps.

Download XP SP3

This article was written on April 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

windows-xp-sp3.pngSo Windows XP SP3 was finally completed on Monday which goes along with the release schedule that we had previously provided. TechNet and MSDN subscribers were furious that they would not be given the download until after it was released to the public, and looked at it as a slap in the face from Microsoft. The negative publicity obviously wasn’t what Microsoft wanted, and so today they made the download available to those subscribers.

Does it even matter now? Not really… the 316MB XP SP3 download is appearing on sites all across the Internet. A good example of this is over at two of my favorite places: Major Geeks and Softpedia. They’ve already posted the full download, and have mirrored it in several different locations. That essentially means that it is already publicly available despite the fact that Microsoft won’t officially be posting it on their own site until Monday.

So if you want to get XP SP3 (build 5512) a little early head on over to Major Geeks or Softpedia. The download speeds won’t be blazing fast, but it sure beats tinkering around with a torrent.
