Polaroid XS80 HD Action Camera Ready to Record Your Outdoor Shenanigans

Polaroid has released a new action camera designed to be mountable on whatever it is you get your action fix on. The camera is called the Polaroid XS80 and it records in 1080p full HD resolution at 30fps.

The camera can also capture 720p video, though that doesn’t increase the frame rate. The XS80 is packed inside of a tough waterproof housing – good down to 10 meters. It’s impact-resistant so you can mount it on things like bicycles and motorcycles, and features anti-shake technology. It also has a wide 120-degree field of view for capturing as much of the action as it can. It’s even got a G-Sensor which ensures the image is always upright in case you mount the camera at a weird angle.

Still photos can be snapped in resolutions of 16, five, and three-megapixels as well as VGA resolution. The camera offers three different photo modes including single, burst, and time-lapse. Video and photos are written to a microSD card with up to 32GB of storage. Power comes from an integrated lithium-ion battery and it also has an HDMI output. MSRP for the XS80 is $129.99(USD) and while Polaroid says it’s available now, the products page lists it as unavailable at the time of writing.

Google confirms over 900 million Android activations, 48bn app installs

Today we’ve just officially kicked off Google I/O, and to start things off Google’s own Sundar Pichai is on the stage talking about the past, the future, personal computing and more. And right out of the gate we’re already getting to the good stuff. Talking Android, Chrome, numbers and of course Android. Today Google is proud to announce that they’ve nearly reached the 1 billion mark.

Sundar Pichai has just confirmed that with nearly 400 million Android activations by the end of 2012, here mid-way through 2013 we’ve already more than doubled that massive number, and Android’s ecosystem has reached 900 million. Talk about a big number. Android developers and manufacturers are an important part of that, obviously, and their proud to announce they’ve paid out developers more in 4 months this year, than all of 2012 combined.

Along with the confirmation of nearly 900 million Android activations, there has also been over 48 billion (yes with a B) billion Android app installs. Not only that, but there has already been 2.5 billion in the past month. It’s safe to say Google’s Android OS is only speeding up, and showing absolutely zero signs of slowing down.

It’s also worth noting that just last month Google Android activations was sitting around 750 million. So in the past month or so that’s grown to over 900. We’re expecting this to only increase, and by the end of 2013 Android could be topping 1.5 billion. Next up we’re talking Android, Google Play, locations data and more. Stay tuned and follow our Google I/O Portal.

Ex-cop Builds a Robot, Surprisingly Not Robocop

When you retire, you have to keep busy. Otherwise life could get pretty boring. Mark Haygood retired as a Baltimore police officer after two decades and now he keeps himself busy building robots – robots made from old appliances.

hex bot

His first creation is HEX, a four-foot tall self-standing robot that took four years to build. HEX has fully-functional hands, arms, and legs. And even though it isn’t completely stable, it can walk. Mark is constantly working on perfecting HEX.

HEX looks pretty well designed considering that he was made from a bunch of old appliances and toys. That definitely says something about Mark’s skill. We will have to wait and see what else Mark comes up with, but he is off to a great start with HEX.
