The path from Kickstarter to customers is seldom smooth, and life-logging camera company Narrative (née Memoto) knows that better than most, announcing another hardware issue today that will delay shipping for early backers. According to a message sent to early supporters on the crowdfunding site, issues with camera quality, PCBs, and some of the casing […]
Switched On: A wristed development
Posted in: Today's ChiliEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
It is difficult enough to turn around one niche product category and make it successful, as Apple did with the iPad. But combining two marketplace failures is almost certainly a recipe for disaster. FiLIP, the new kid-tracker, is part connected watch, part smartphone. Prior attempts to optimize these devices for children — or at least for the parents who want their kids to wear them — haven’t been well received. On the wristwear side, there was the Wherify Wireless watch, a monstrous wrist-locked GPS device. It was so optimized for the kidnapper-concerned that it sent an alarm message over the cellular network if it was removed without authorization.

Google has snarked back at Microsoft’s controversial “Scroogled” products, the range of anti-Google mugs, t-shirts, and other items that quietly went on sale earlier this week. The latest move in Microsoft’s Gmail and Chrome sniping, the physical “Scroogled” products mark an escalation of what was previously an online campaign, but Google has issued a tongue-in-cheek […]

Posted in: Today's ChiliNeptune has introduced its own smartwatch, the Pine, which has met and exceeded its Kickstarter funding goal on the crowdfunding website. Evena Medical is the maker of a medical device that allows nurses and doctors to view the veins beneath one’s skin, with the original device it created having been deployed a while ago and involving the movement of a large contraption. Because of the device’s size, it both made the act of giving and IV […]
Evena’s smart glasses offer nurses a through-the-skin view of patients’ veins (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s not always easy for nurses to find the right vein for an intravenous drip — the target vessels are sometimes hidden below the skin. Evena Medical’s new Eyes-On smart glasses may make those injections a little easier. The Moverio-based eyewear overlays a 3D blood vessel map on the patient, helping the nurse insert even a tricky IV line on the first try. It can also tap into a hospital’s medical records and share imagery with doctors in remote locations. There’s no word on just which hospitals will use Eyes-On when it ships in the first quarter of 2014, but don’t be surprised if it makes your hospital stay a little more bearable in the near future. Check out a video promo for the glasses after the break.

Acknowledged, a full web browser may not be the most useful thing to run on a 1.6-inch touchscreen, but that’s almost not the point here. What matters is that Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch now has its own custom ROM, courtesy of an XDA member called fOmey. The modded software side-steps a number of the manufacturer’s locks and limitations, letting the device run third-party apps, widgets, wallpapers and interfaces like Nova Launcher. Bluetooth tethering is enabled too, apparently allowing the watch to grab a web connection from any smartphone that supports the protocol. It’s hard to say for sure how smoothly it all runs, due to a lack of feedback from Gear owners so far (or perhaps a lack of Gear owners, period), but you’ll find full instructions at the source link if you want to give it a go.
