JetBlue scores FAA approval for Fly-Fi, may launch satellite WiFi next month

Earns Jet Blue

JetBlue’s next-generation WiFi service, powered by ViaSat’s super-speedy Ka-band satellite, is officially on track to launch this October. The FAA just issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the airline’s Airbus A320, enabling a fleet-wide installation that’s set to begin immediately. In a statement, Chief Commercial Officer Robin Hayes said that several aircraft will be wired by the end of this year, with many A320s scheduled to come online throughout 2014. The rollout will then continue with JetBlue’s smaller Embraer 190, currently used on select regional routes.

Ask Engadget: share a single muni-fi account with multiple devices?

Ask Engadget share a single munifi account with multiple devices

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Zoe, who needs to help out her mum (she’s in the UK) with a tricky WiFi problem. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“My mum’s retirement community offers a municipal WiFi service for £130 per year, but only provides a login that can be used on a single device at a time. More annoyingly, that device has to use a web browser, which means that you can’t access it using an Apple TV at all. To get around that, I’ve leant her my Mac Mini, and then I share the WiFi connection over Ethernet to an Airport Extreme. Unfortunately, this only works for short bursts at a time before the DHCP or connection sharing goes screwy and needs to be reset. My question, therefore, is what can I buy that will connect to this crappy WiFi and share that connection to the other wireless devices around the home? Would it be possible to use Raspberry Pi or some other small device to do the job? All it has to do is be stable and have an uptime longer than 2 hours. Thanks!”

This is the sort of question that most geeks love getting their hands on, because it’s a good old-fashioned problem. You’ll just have to ignore all of the people who tell your mom to move house instead of coming up with a useful solution. Either way, we did think that perhaps there was a way to share this connection using a hotspot device, but they primarily use Ethernet. As such, we’re going to turn this question open to our community for some sage advice. Surely there must be a simple way to do this without depriving Zoe of her Mac Mini?

SFO Free Airport Wi-Fi Gets A Speed Boost

SFO Free Airport Wi Fi Gets A Speed BoostAre you one who loves or loathes airports? The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has a certain charm about it, and this time around, it intends to make life easier and more convenient for the millions of travelers who go through its terminals every single year by completing the comprehensive upgrade of the airport’s free Wi-Fi network. In fact, hooking up to the Internet at SFO is so easy now, all you need to do is accept the terms and conditions (who reads those, anyways?) with a single click, and you are good to go. Not only that, SFO’s Wi-Fi network will deliver ad-free connectivity so that you can get more productive and keep in touch without having any pesky windows pop up to distract you.

Apart from that, the new Wi-Fi network will also boast of faster speeds in comparison to the previous network system, not to mention allowing you a far longer connect session of up to 2 hours instead of its predecessor. You can also move between terminals seamlessly without requiring to reconnect at a different terminal, and just in case you run into issues, there is a support number on the splash page to help you out of a tight spot. There will be further upgrades down the road to deliver additional increases in network capacity as well as the addition of wireless access points throughout the airport.

Amazon said to have tested technology for its own wireless network

Amazon may not be happy with just piggybacking on other wireless carrier’s signals for Whispernet-style offerings, as Bloomberg has heard it’s trying out technology that would let it create its own wireless network. The technology used in the tests is from Globalstar, which is seeking to convert its spectrum — intended for use by satellite-connected devices like the Global Phone pictured above — for strictly ground-based use. The report points out a letter from Globalstar technical adviser Jarvinian to the FCC indicating it was helping a “major technology company” assess the performance benefits available earlier this year. The usual people with knowledge of the situation have filled in the blanks, however whether the tests are continuing or if Amazon will ever make real use of it is unknown. If things do move forward Amazon would hardly be alone in its efforts with Dish Network’s similar push to use spectrum it owns for LTE. If Globalstar really can do LTE / public WiFi better we’re ready to hear about it, although hopefully it will connect to more hardware than just some future Kindle Fire 4.

High Speed In-Flight Internet Possible By Next Year

High Speed In Flight Internet Possible By Next YearIn-flight Internet has been around for some years already, but not all flights still offer this particular service. Not only that, you could more or less say that the in-flight Wi-Fi might not be fast enough to stream video content from sites including Netflix and the BBC’s iPlayer, but all of that might probably change by the time 2014 rolls around. According to communications regulator Ofcom, they are proposing to license a new satellite system for aircraft – as well as ships and trains, of course. Earth Stations on Mobile Platforms (ESOMPs) is capable of delivering connections up to 10 times faster compared to what one is can experience at the moment.

Britain’s airlines have yet to indicate whether they would sign up for this particular technology or not, although British Airways’ in-flight entertainment and technology manager, Richard D’Cruze, claimed that the airline was “closely monitoring developments in the connectivity market in both the satellite and direct air-to-ground technology areas”. Ofcom did mention that it has been working alongside its European counterparts for the past couple of years, where they will include France, Germany and Luxembourg, who happen to be in the process of piecing together their own regulations. I am quite sure that everyone would not mind having faster Internet many miles up in the air, no?
