Garmin has weighed into the action camera market, taking on GoPro with the VIRB and VIRB Elite, each with a waterproof casing and Full HD recording. Promising IPX-7 waterproofing and ruggedization – rather than demanding separate cases – the VIRB and VIRB Elite can shoot up to three hours of 1080p footage from a full […]

E-ink displays can be powered wirelessly with NFC

It is widely known that e-ink displays require very little power, one of their biggest bragging points. Because they display static images, power is required only when the image is being refreshed to something new, and as it turns out, NFC provides enough energy to accomplish this. Such was demonstrated in a video we have […]

AirCast Chromecast “any video” app released by Koush in Beta

Earlier this year Google’s Chromcast device became (rather quickly) one of their biggest hardware hits, selling out not long after it was first put on sale. Almost as quickly, developer Koushik Dutta began work on prospective apps for the device, aiming to expand the functionality of the miniature HDMI-friendly dongle to allow more than Google’s […]

Kogan Mobile to wind down after wholesale provider ispONE goes bust

Telstra wholesaler ispONE enters administration, leaves Kogan Mobile in limbo

Virtual carriers are only as healthy as the companies that provide their services — and Australia’s Kogan Mobile is learning this the hard way. Its wholesale cellular partner ispONE has just entered administration following a contract dispute with Telstra, ending all its deals for prepaid 3G services and leaving Kogan Mobile no choice but to wind down. Customers have already lost the ability to add or replenish services; they’ll have up to 60 days after a Telstra notice to use any credit they have left, and 180 days to port their numbers elsewhere. While Kogan’s shutdown may only affect about 100,000 people, it still represents an unfortunate loss of competition in a country with few major providers.

Oppo R819 hands-on (video)

Oppo R819 handson video

Oppo smartphones may have a good reach in China, but it’s a name that most people in the Western Hemisphere haven’t heard of. As many other OEMs from the area, the manufacturer is hoping to reverse that trend, and its strategy is to first appeal to the most hardcore of enthusiasts with its latest device, the R819; is it any wonder, by the way, why Oppo would choose today of all days to launch it? This isn’t the product’s first rodeo, actually, because it’s already available as the TD-SCDMA-friendly R819T on China Mobile, but now it’s ready to reach other markets throughout the world. While it doesn’t appear poised to replace the flagship Find 5 (still available at online retailers for roughly $500), the R819 should make for a solid handset in the mid-range tier.

The reason we mentioned that Oppo plans to win the hearts of Android enthusiasts is because the company’s mantra is to let you, the user, do whatever you want to the phone. While the R819 will come with an already existing version of Color ROM out of the box, Oppo promises to have vanilla Android 4.2 available on its site, where all you need to do is download the ROM on your computer, sideload it onto the phone, install in the recovery and reboot the device. A new version of Color ROM should be ready for update in November, and reps tell us that the phone will be upgradeable to Android 4.3 sometime soon.

So what did we think of the R819? Check out our gallery and video below, followed by a few more thoughts. %Gallery-slideshow72864%

BLU Life View hands-on

DNP BLU Products Life View handson

Looking for a smartphone with a large display, decent specs and a price tag just shy of $300 unlocked and contract-free? It’s not an easy thing to find here in the US of A, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. In fact, a little-known manufacturer out of Miami known as BLU is doing its darndest to get on the map and show off its brute handset-making skills at a reasonable cost. It’s been a big player in the KIRF arena for quite some time, but its latest lineup of phones — Life — appears to have a bit of personality of its own. Of the devices in the Life series, we’ve received an early unit of the Life View, a 5.7-inch Android model, from our friends at Negri Electronics, an online retailer that recently began selling the device for $299. Take a closer look at our gallery of images below and then follow us after the break for a few impressions.
