Trump now has full control of the FTC

With the recent confirmation of Mark Meador as Federal Trade Commissioner, the Republicans now have a 3-0 majority at the FTC, giving President Donald Trump broad control over what was once an aggressive business regulator under former FTC chair Lina Khan.

The vote fell along party lines, with all Senate Democrats voting against confirming Meador. Under normal circumstances three Republican members at the FTC is expected. Whichever party the president represents typically holds three seats, while the other party holds two. What makes the new Republican majority unusual is that Trump fired the Democrat Commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter in March, something that’s not supposed to happen without “good cause.”

The FTC, like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is technically part of the executive branch, but exists independently of the rest of the government, with the current president adding new members as terms end or in the rare case there’s good cause to remove a commissioner, like if they’re found guilty of malfeasance or neglecting their duties.

An executive order Trump signed in February 2025 sought to exert more control over these independent organizations in the name of “accountability.” That was the primary justification for removing Bedoya and Slaughter, both of which are fighting their termination in court

Given the actions Biden’s FTC took against corporate America, like suing John Deere over unfair practices and leading antitrust investigations into Meta, Amazon, Google and Apple, it makes sense business-friendly Republicans would prefer less pushback from Democrats. That doesn’t make anything that’s happening legal, though.

Google AI Mode Adds Multimodal Search To Mobile App

In early March 2025, Google introduced a new feature called “AI Mode” within its mobile search app—Today (April 7th), the company announced a significant update to this feature, enabling multimodal search capabilities in the Google app for Android and iOS devices.

With the new update, users can now conduct searches by combining visual and textual inputs. This means a person can take a photo and ask a related question in the same search session. The results will not only provide answers but also include contextual information, relevant web links, and even comparisons between similar products when applicable. This aims to make the search process more dynamic, intuitive, and helpful for real-world scenarios.

To power this functionality, Google has implemented a technique known as “query distribution.” This method analyzes the image as a whole while also identifying and separating individual objects within the picture. By doing so, it can generate a series of focused queries that offer deeper and more specific results. For example, if a user takes a photo of a bookshelf, the tool can recognize the books shown and then recommend other titles based on the user’s apparent interests.

This enhancement is the result of combining two powerful technologies from Google’s ecosystem: the Gemini multimodal AI model and Google Lens. Together, they form the backbone of the improved AI Mode in Search, allowing users to interact with the app in a more natural and versatile way. In the example provided by Google, AI Mode was able to identify book covers in an image and suggest similar books to the user — demonstrating how the tool can offer not just factual answers but also personalized suggestions.

The updated AI Mode is gradually being made available in the Google app for both Android and iOS users. Interested users can access it by downloading or updating the app through the official app stores.

This development represents a broader move by Google to enhance its search tools with artificial intelligence, making information retrieval more seamless and context-aware. By enabling people to combine images and questions in a single query, Google is reshaping how users interact with information in everyday situations.

Samsung And Stanford Medicine Collaborate To Advance Sleep Apnea Detection And Management

Samsung Electronics has announced a new research collaboration with Stanford Medicine to further develop its Sleep Apnea feature available on Galaxy Watch devices. This initiative is aligned with World Health Day and part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the importance of sleep health.

With approximately 1 in 3 Americans using sleep tracking devices, interest in improving sleep quality is steadily rising. In response, Samsung is working to provide more proactive health solutions, particularly in addressing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) — a common yet underdiagnosed condition. Samsung’s Sleep Apnea feature, which detects signs of moderate to severe OSA, has received De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — marking the first approval of its kind for wearable sleep apnea detection.

The feature was also previously approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and more recently by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). It will become available to users in Brazil in late April, expanding the total number of markets to 29, with further global rollout planned.

To take the technology further, Samsung has partnered with Stanford University for a joint research study led by Dr. Robson Capasso and Dr. Clete Kushida. The project aims to enhance the Sleep Apnea feature by going beyond detection to offer daily AI-powered monitoring and sleep apnea management tools. The goal is to help users gain better insight into their sleep health and take informed steps toward improvement.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch currently uses a combination of sensors and algorithms to monitor sleep and detect patterns related to sleep apnea. The collaborative research with Stanford will explore new methods to refine these capabilities, ultimately supporting users with more advanced, personalized sleep health solutions.

Dr. Capasso emphasized the importance of ethically and scientifically validated technology in addressing serious sleep-related conditions, noting that smartwatches offer a user-friendly platform for widespread adoption. Dr. Hon Pak, Samsung’s Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team, highlighted that the collaboration aims to move beyond simple screening and toward meaningful, real-time health support through wearable devices.

As more people invest in tools to monitor and improve their sleep, Samsung’s partnership with Stanford signals a step forward in making smart, research-driven sleep care more accessible across the globe. Don’t forget to check out our Galaxy Watch 6 review!

Ireland's privacy regulator is investigating X's use of public data to train Grok

Ireland’s data privacy regulator is investigating Elon Musk’s X. The country’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) said on Friday (via Reuters) that it’s opening an inquiry into the social platform’s use of European users’ public posts to train its Grok AI chatbot. In this case, Ireland handles EU regulation enforcement because X’s European headquarters are in Dublin.

The DPC said it will probe “the processing of personal data comprised in publicly-accessible posts posted on the ‘X’ social media platform by EU/EEA users.” Under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules, Ireland has the legal muscle to fine X up to four percent of its global revenue.

“The purpose of this inquiry is to determine whether this personal data was lawfully processed in order to train the Grok LLMs,” Ireland’s DPC said.

If this sounds familiar, the DPC took X to court in 2024, seeking an order to stop it from training Grok on EU user data without consent. That followed a platform policy change in July that let the social site use public posts to train its AI chatbot. However, Ireland’s data regulator ended the legal proceedings weeks later, saying the company had agreed to permanently limit its use of EU users’ personal data in Grok. The DPC hasn’t specified why it now believes the company may be violating GDPR rules.

The DPC’s last fine against the company (then known as Twitter) was a €450,000 penalty in 2020 for failing to notify the regulator about a data breach within the 72-hour window.
