In Touring trim, the 2010 Honda Pilot sports plenty of tech

When Honda redesigned its large SUV, the Pilot, last year, we saw the expected sheet metal changes. But we didn’t expect such a radical change to the cabin tech. In fact, so much of the tech interface is borrowed from Acura, we were in pretty …

Time Warner Cable reselling WiMAX later this year in Charlotte, Dallas, and two mystery markets

It’s not really that surprising given its investment in Clearwire, but Time Warner Cable is now ready to join in on the WiMAX fun. The company plans to resell the mobile broadband in four US cities by the end of the year, but so far it’s only revealed two of them: Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dallas, Texas. Meanwhile, cable competitor Comcast has already opened up its WiMAX shop in Portland, Oregon, and plans to hit Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia by the end of this year. No word on prices, but we don’t expect it to stray far from the current $20 to $50 monthly fees. We’re also a bit in the dark as to when we can expect the rollout this year, so if you’re in one of those two markets and have a strong itch for 4G wireless, better start filling up that piggy bank now, just to be safe.

Philips HF3490 Wake-up Light is also a bedside lamp, iPod dock

Did you know that waking up by natural light is a lot less stressful than doing it with sound? Yes, apparently your toast tastes better too. Philips has long been a proponent of light alarms and, in an effort to stay hip with the kids, it’s added a detachable iPod / iPhone dock to its latest offering. The HF3490 might never serve as your music station, but it tries hard, bringing an FM radio and some soothing sounds along. With 30 different levels of brightness and a “dusk simulator,” this device has enough tweaking options to ensure you wake up just the way nature intended — with birds chirping and soft sunlight on your pillow, all simulated by futuristically ugly electronics. If you can get over the $199 price, you can pre-order one for delivery on August 22.

DSi v1.4 firmware happening now in Japan, bringing Facebook connectivity along for the ride

Back at E3 2009 it was announced that Nintendo would roll out the capability to upload photo to Facebook from the DSi. Well, we’re hearing from Engadget Japanese that that firmware updating is now occurring. It’s a pretty minor update which includes the aforementioned ability to upload photos to Facebook, and brings a faster “image display speed” in the DSi’s camera. We’re sure there’s some behind the scenes tweaking going on too, right? No word on when this update will hit elsewhere, but we’ll keep our eyes on our DSi until it happens. You know, for work. Check out Engadget Japanese’s video of the upgraded features after the break.

LG BL40 Chocolate is all official

LG BL40

LG BL40

(Credit: LG)

We’ve already told you that LG is releasing a new Chocolate phone in Europe under the BL40 moniker, and on Thursday LG decided to make it official. Indeed, the LG BL40 is skinny and long, much like a universal remote, and it has a stunning 4-inch display with the 21:9 wide-screen ratio we’d heard rumors about. The high-definition “Real VGA” LCD supports a 800×345 pixel resolution and boasts a cinema-like experience in your hand. LG also says that it has a Dual Screen UI that can display two different types of content at the same time. The screen is made out of a curved, tempered glass. Of course, this is strictly a Europe/Asia product (LG has yet to release a GSM Chocolate to a U.S. carrier), but perhaps we can get a slightly different version of it here courtesy of Verizon. We’ll see. In the meantime, you can drool over these official pictures of the LG BL40. It’ll be out by the third quarter of this year. More photos after the break.

RIAA says consumers shouldn’t expect DRM servers to run forever

Man, these Copyright Office triennial DMCA hearings seem to be some kind of competition for media-industry lawyers to present ridiculous arguments — just a couple months after the MPAA tried to convince us that videotaping DVDs was an acceptable alternative to ripping, the RIAA’s claiming that consumers shouldn’t expect their DRM servers to stay online and allow them to play their music to play forever. No joke. The argument comes as the Copyright Office decides whether or not to allow a DMCA exemption for breaking DRM, and RIAA lawyer Steven Metalitz’s position is that copyright owners shouldn’t be required to “provide consumers with perpetual access to creative works,” since “no other product or service providers are held to such lofty standards.” Of course, that’s only partially true, since properly maintained physical media and DRM-free content theoretically can be played forever, but why acknowledge reality when you can jack up your legal bills making completely absurd arguments that make your porcine, slowly-decaying clients seem even more doomed than before?
