Remember in May when we wrote about Google’s new Mapplets? The developer preview is over and it’s now live! Mapplets are mini-webpages served inside an IFrame within Google Maps that allows users to create their own mapping mash-ups. According to Google, ever since the official Google Maps API was released in June 2005, over 50,000 Mashups have been created. And ever since May when the preview version of Mapplets was launched, over 100 developers submitted Mapplets.

You’ll notice a “My Maps” tab on the Google Maps page, and this is where you’ll be able to select the content that you would like to layer on your map. There is a lot to choose from, so the “search” feature will come in handy if there’s something in particular that you want to add to your map like local real estate. If not, just browse around by clicking “add content.”

I created a map that displayed gas prices from GasBuddy.com, Google Real Estate Search, and weather from WeatherBug. This is what my map looked like:

As mentioned in our previous article about Mapplets, this gives developers the chance to get creative with their own mapplets and receive exposure. The list of mapplets available just continues to grow (back in May it was 23) which means there there’s a greater chance you’ll find relevant mapplets to add to your own map.

While USB flash drives are now available in sizes that likely dwarf your own HDD, Super Talent’s Pico line isn’t looking to compete on sheer capaciousness. What it lacks in capacity, so to speak, it makes up for in size — or, the lack thereof, we should say. The outfit’s “world’s smallest*” drive just jumped from 8GB to 32GB, and considering that there’s at least a marginal chance that this thing slips out of your palm / pocket / etc. and into a puddle, Super Talent even threw in a dash of water resistance. A half dozen models are expected to ship this week, with prices ranging from $85 to $99. Too bad you won’t even be able to find it between the couch cushions after it arrives.

Sure, the Touch Pro2 from HTC is available from a variety of carriers around the world at this point — but you won’t find many (read: none) that are offering it in the US right now, which makes T-Mobile’s launch especially notable. As expected, it’ll be hitting on August 12, bringing a 3.2 megapixel camera, AWS 3G, GPS, a glorious 3.6-inch WVGA display, WiFi, and that unique Straight Talk tech that should make the phone one of the best speakerphones you’ve ever used (frequent conference callers, take note). Pricing hasn’t been announced, but expect it in the lovely shade pictures above, which is being termed “mocha” (your choice of vocabulary may vary).

You’ve already read our thoughts on the new Xbox Live dashboard update, and now it’s time for those who put in their name for the preview program to join the fun. Microsoft today began sending invites that’ll get you set up for the download, so that you can enjoy Avatar marketplace and a slew of new Netflix options (and irksome restrictions for Starz Play titles). Registration is still open if you still want a shot at nabbing it before August 11th. Didn’t get an email? A second wave of invites is going out tomorrow, but also be sure to check the Connect site you registered at anyway, as Microsoft notes those who opted out of receiving emails will have no other way of confirming.
