Android x86 LiveCD now available, lets you run Android on your desktop

Sure, the whole world and Steve Ballmer might be buzzing about Chrome OS, but a dedicated duo of hackers has been hard at work porting Google’s other operating system to x86, and they’ve just released an .02 version of their Android LiveCD build. That means you’re now free to boot and run the ‘droid from your optical drive, install it in a virtual machine, install it for real on your old laptop, whatever — just don’t get upset if it bugs out on you. Anyone gonna do some ‘sploring?

iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 released (update: disables tethering, enables AR?)

Unless you have a developer account with Apple, don’t bother plugging your iPhone into iTunes — we promise you’re not going to have access to it — but devs can now get their grubby paws on beta 2 of iPhone OS 3.1. We’ll let you know if we see anything crazy, like usable Gmail, true background applications, or a notification UI that doesn’t make you want to throw the phone against a very hard surface at high velocity.

Update: Looks like Apple has closed the door on hacks that enable tethering in this release — at least for AT&T according to early reports.

Update 2: We’ve just been informed that beta 2 also introduces what appears to be a public API for manipulating live video. Devs are still testing the capabilities but it could open the door for augmented reality applications like Layar to come to the iPhone 3GS.

Steve Ballmer calls Chrome OS “highly interesting,” says Google “can’t make up their mind”

You just knew Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would have some choice words about Google’s Chrome OS at today’s Windows Partner Conference, and he didn’t disappoint, saying that while he finds the project “highly interesting,” the late-2010 ship date and existence of Android have him wondering exactly what it’s supposed to be. “I don’t know if they can’t make up their mind or what the problem is over there, but the last time I checked, you don’t need two client operating systems. It’s good to have one.” Snap. Of course, Microsoft is shipping six different Windows 7 SKUs, can’t quite get rid of XP, and sells Windows Mobile, Windows CE, and Zune in the handheld space, but the man’s got a point — the real question is whether he’s smiling or just baring his teeth in rage.

Samsung Giorgio Armani 2 specs leaked by Bluetooth SIG

As best as we can tell, that June 11th Armani event with Samsung and Microsoft came and went with nothing more than a new ad campaign featuring David Beckham in his knickers, and Sammy’s June 15th solo fête was devoted to the Omnia lineup and said nothing of any impending Windows Mobile fashionphone. So whatever happened to the rumored luxury device? The Bluetooth SIG group has leaked specs of the Samsung B7620, which the company’s Twitter feed labels as the Giorgio Armani 2. According to the product page, under the hood we’re looking at a 800MHz processor, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, A-GPS, Stereo FM Radio, WiFi, business card scanner, and the usual assortment audio / video codecs. Of course, the big deal here is gonna be what’s it gonna look like on the exterior, and unfortunately this technological diva hasn’t seen fit to leave her dressing room just yet.

Wood computer workstation takes up space, looks great, does little else

Dear Diary 1.0 is a computer workstation / desk made entirely of wood. Designed by Marlies Romberg, a recent grad of the Utrecht School of Arts, this bad boy features a laser-cut keyboard, a display, mouse, and a porcelain and silicone USB thumb drive with a signet (one of those wax seals they always put on letters in old-timey movies). We’re guessing that none of this stuff is functional (save maybe the thumb drive), but if you’re in the mood for a good artist’s statement, try this one on for size: “Dear Diary 1.0 is … both the literal and the figurative manifestation of the worlds colliding. A physical reminder that increasingly, the real and the digital are becoming indistinguishable.” Not bad, eh? Just slap your Amazon Kindling on the thing and your anachronistic office will be just about complete. More pics after the break.

Microsoft And eBay Teaming Up For Piracy Prevention

This article was written on December 07, 2005 by CyberNet.

Microsoft and eBay are teaming up to prevent the sale of illegal Microsoft software (surprise surprise!).

Microsoft and eBay are working together to stop the sale of pirated software on the online auction site. The companies said in a statement that over 21,000 suspect software sales were removed from the eBay UK site between August and October this year. Around half were sales of counterfeit copies of Windows, and 36 per cent were fake copies of Microsoft Office.

Microsoft claimed that the crackdown is working because eBay removed 11,535 suspected counterfeit sales from the site in August. This fell to 4,460 in September and 5,423 in October. But many sellers have insisted that eBay is not doing enough to tackle fraud. Richard Coleman, a regular eBay user from Luton, said: “I have been the victim of at least three fraudsters. One was a mobile phone that did not exist, another was a registration code for an online gaming service that was illegal, and the third was a pirated DVD. “When you tell eBay they do not really help you. They informed us that the registration code we had was pirated but failed to recompense us for the cost. “If I was buying software I would expect about 10 per cent to be pirated or fake. The only way you can tell is by comparing the pricing of a number of sellers. If it looks too good it is probably dodgy.”

TechSaver Test: Sears Electronics Deals

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray playerThere was a time when my family and I bought everything from Sears: refrigerators, stoves, clothes, even computers. But since there are dedicated electronics stores like Best Buy and TigerDirect, no one really thinks of shopping at Sears for electronics anymore.

I’ve been wondering, though, if we’ve been missing out on some great deals at Sears. That’s why I’m choosing the retailer for today’s TechSaver test.

For this savings challenge, I really had to dig deep into Sears.com for deals specifically related to electronics and computers. On the homepage of Sears.com, you’ll notice deals on Sharp HDTVs, a Sylvania HDTV, and a Sony Blu-ray player–but that’s it. So, I clicked on the Electronics & Computers category and scrolled through the different products to find other things on sale.

What I came back with was the Nikon D40, the Sony BDP-S350, the Sharp AQUOS LC-40E67U, and the PNY USB 2.0 4GB Flash Drive.

Should you head straight to the cashiers at Sears? Find out, after the jump.
