Samsung sends Verizon an unnamed Android smartphone with LTE, Super AMOLED Plus display

Though it’s just being called the “Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone” at this point, rest assured: the Android-powered device is very much real and very much destined for Verizon’s airwaves. Though the inclusion of LTE is obviously a high point, the phone’s claim to fame might be that it’ll be among the first devices in the world to feature one of Sammy’s newfangled Super AMOLED Plus displays (4.3 inches, in this case) that offers even better contrast and outdoor viewability than the original Super AMOLED did. You’ve got TouchWiz-skinned Android 2.2, an 8 megapixel camera with flash paired to a 1.3 megapixel front-facing unit for video calling, and a 1GHz processor that seems to mirror what’s already being offered on most of the Galaxy S series today — no dual-core madness here.

We had a few fleeting moments to touch (but not photograph) the phone recently, and the screen is definitely a sight to behold — we’re not sure how Samsung managed to make a more contrasty display than Super AMOLED, but it did. We’ll admit, we didn’t love the tapered shape — we thought it looked a little strange sitting on a table, though some might like it and it’s certainly not a big deal either way. We also weren’t huge fans of the big physical buttons below the display, a surprising counterpoint to the recent trend toward capacitive buttons on high-end Android devices. It’s a heavy phone, though probably not heavy enough to bother folks who are in the market for a 4.3-inch display anyway — and hey, we won’t know for sure how it stacks up until we pit it head-to-head in a brutal deathmatch with Verizon’s other version-one LTE phones like the Droid Bionic. Follow the break for the full press release.

Samsung bringing 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot to Verizon

Novatel? Yes. Sierra Wireless? Sure. Pantech? Definitely — but one company we didn’t really expect to be launching a pocketable mobile hotspot on an American carrier was Samsung. Sure enough, Sammy is hooking up with Verizon to rock the carrier’s very first mobile hotspot product to be announced with LTE compatibility, a crucial feature that should give the Sprint Overdrives and 3G / 4G MiFis of the world a run for their collective money. Though it lacks a creative name, the so-called 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot is precisely as described with a dash of CDMA / EV-DO compatibility thrown in for those rare occasions when you stray outside your local LTE footprint. We don’t have a price or date yet, but there’s not a lot of rocket science here compared to… say, the Inspiration, so hopefully it won’t be long.

Though we didn’t have a chance to put it through a live test, we’ve had our hands on this little device already and we can say it’s basically a dead ringer for the CDMA version of the first-generation Novatel MiFi as sold on Verizon, Sprint, and others. The only change, really, is that it feels a bit thicker, a bit more “solid,” and a bit heavier, but not nearly enough to make a practical difference — you’ll still gladly throw this thing in your pocket when you need a cloud of steamy hot WiFi in your vicinity. Follow the break for the full press release.

HTC Thunderbolt and LG Revolution official on Verizon (update)

Would you look at that. Verizon’s ongoing press conference has been accompanied by the appearance of two 4.3-inch LTE handsets coming to the network. Both HTC’s Thunderbolt and LG’s Revolution were pretty well known in advance, but hey, now we have big luscious high-res pictures to gawk at. The Revolution will come with Android 2.2 preloaded while the Thunderbolt has Skype video calling integrated right into HTC Sense. The latter device also boasts a Super LCD display, 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, DLNA, Dolby Surround Sound, and the honor of being a Verizon exclusive in the US. Now that the devices have been made official, we also know that the Revolution can stream, play and record HD video, perform video chat with a front-facing camera, and share its 4G connection with up to eight devices through its built-in hotspot functionality. Jump past the break for the full announcement.

Update: Hop on past the break for the Thunderbolt specs, courtesy of our friend Peyton (and HTC).

T-Mobile G-Slate revealed at CES press event

We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know what it would look like… or anything else besides 4G, Honeycomb, and an LG partnership, but at it’s press event here at CES, T-Mobile has finally revealed its G-Slate tablet. It looks like, well, a big screen, and we’re still working on getting more details, but for now these shots from the presser will have to suffice.

Motorola Atrix 4G, HD multimedia dock, and laptop dock hands-on

Earlier today, we got a complete demo and some seat time with the Motorola Atrix 4G for AT&T at Motorola’s CES event, including its HD multimedia dock and laptop dock. The phone looks similar to the Samsung Vibrant, but with a black screen bezel and a tastefully patterned matte back cover. Build quality is very good, as we’d expect from a Motorola device. The QHD (960 x 540) display is gorgeous and the phone feels ultra snappy, thanks to the dual-core processor running Froyo. In fact, despite still running preliminary firmware, we recorded a blazing 2,616 score on the Quadrant test. The power button at the top back of the Atrix 4G also serves as a fingerprint reader, and there’s a dual-LED flash flanking the 5 megapixel camera. Check out the gallery below and read on for the details — and the complete demo on video — after the break.

Samsung Infuse 4G for AT&T eyes-on (Update: video)

We were checking out the Samsung booth at the Digital Experience event at CES when, lo and behold, we stumbled upon the Samsung Infuse 4G for AT&T in all its gigantic 4.5-inch Super Amoled Plus display glory. There was only one catch: we weren’t permitted to touch it, nor take shots of the back of the phone. So we compiled a few pictures of the front and sides of the 9 mm thin device below, including a size comparison with the iPhone 4.

Samsung’s Android-Powered Infuse 4G Makes Your Smartphone Look Tiny

In some circles, bigger isn’t necessarily better. But from the look of the new Infuse 4G smartphone for AT&T, Samsung probably doesn’t belong to that crowd.

Measuring in at a whopping 4.5 inches, the Infuse’s Super AMOLED screen is bigger than the 4.3 inch HTC EVO and similar Motorola DROID X, two of the largest Android-running smartphones on the market.
CES 2011
Along with its massive size, it’s also got a few beefy features under the hood. The Infuse has a 1.2 GHz Hummingbird processor running Android 2.2 (Froyo), an 8-megapixel rear facing camera coupled with a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for video chat.

Pricing info isn’t available yet, and neither is the release date. We expect to hear more as CES 2011 continues.

Edited at 12:09 a.m. to note that the cameras are 8 and 1.3 megapixels, respectively.

Motorola Droid Bionic hands-on

If this is the direction high-power smartphones are going, we like what we’re seeing. Though the software’s still a bit raw (there’s no Android Market, for example), the Droid Bionics on display here at Motorola’s CES event this evening look and feel pretty blazingly fast. A spokesman we chatted with said that Motorola is actually doing some manner of software optimization (and yes, it’ll launch with 2.2) to take advantage of the two cores out of the box, so it’s a promising start — as Jha says, it’s “2GHz of processing power.” We hope that’s true in practice!

Physically, the phone feels smooth in the same way a Droid 2 does, though a bit lighter — good news considering the LTE hardware and big display, but not entirely surprising when you take into account the lack of a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The patterned battery cover looks textured, but it’s actually quite smooth with a slight soft touch treatment. The screen looks great — in particular, the viewing angle looked superb, though all phone displays have a tendency to look a little better in this sexy lighting since they can’t wash out as easily. Follow the break for video!

T-Mobile G-Slate announced: 4G, Android 3.0, made by LG

T-Mobile and LG have decided not to sit still in the shadow of Motorola and Verizon’s high-powered 4G Honeycomb tablet partnership and have just announced their intention to introduce the T-Mobile G-Slate. Few details are known at present other than those headline-grabbing 4G (or pseudo-4G) capabilities and Android 3.0 operating system. This is probably the exact same tablet that LG is hosting an event for tomorrow. Jump past the break for some video conferencing, browser, and e-reading demos in awesome, fluid, streamable video. Hey, even if you don’t care for either T-Mobile or LG, this is a pretty nice exposition of the Honeycomb interface.
