Video: Microsoft’s Windows 7 ad punishes Kylie with Swedish “rock”

There’s nothing we like better than putting on Europe’s The Final Countdown and listening to it over and over and yes, over again. The 80’s “rock” anthem is so damn catchy and just happens to be the theme music behind Microsoft’s (first?) Windows 7 television commercial. The bit brings back Kylie who has cast aside Vista and other childish things for Microsoft’s latest OS. It’s “snappy and re-pon-ki-ser,” says the 5 year old. Aww, shucks. Let the cute wash over you in the videos (new and old) after the break.

Bell’s latest Pre ad insults Americans, old people, and bloody roller derby girls in one pass

With the latest installment of Bell’s “Meet my Palm Pre” series, paid spokesman Bradley here has basically guaranteed himself that he’ll be visited by elderly American roller girls with bad attitudes and a taste for justice. Some of the gruesome highlights:

“Unlike our neighbors to the south, Canadians are an active people.”
“Coupe de Kill is kinda scary. I should probably get out of here before she goes on Twitter.”
“According to Wikipedia, this game was first played in 1299. And, uh, I think some of these people were maybe there.”

Follow the break for the video.

Sony’s new PS3 Slim ads prove it ‘gets’ the internet

We have to hand it to Sony, they’ve followed up nicely on their “worst kept secret” trade show jokes with an ad campaign that is fittingly self aware. Our only gripe? That cheap shot at Bernie Buncalan — his blog is pretty good. We also packed in another video after the break. Enjoy.

Apple enlists David Puddy to take on the Laptop Hunters

Apple’s created a whole new chapter in its “Get a Mac” ad campaign based on targeting Microsoft’s successful Laptop Hunters series, and while at this point it’s just a lot of muddled back-and-forth, the gang in Cupertino managed to spice things up a little by bringing in an all-too-recognizable face and voice: Patrick “David Puddy” Warburton. Mr. Brock Samson / Joe Swanson / The Tick comes on as the top-of-the-line PC who some say has a “much too fast” processor but prone to viruses and causing headaches — you knew were the narrative was going. Video after the break, and you can go ahead and start work on your parody video, “You got a question about PCs, you ask the eight ball.”

[Thanks, Travis]

Video: PS3 Slim’s Japanese commercials likely to cause fear, distress, and confusion

The folks at Palm may think they’ve learned how to make some creepy commercials, but let’s face it, they’ve got nothing on Sony. The Japanese company has a long history of discomforting, unexplainable advertising that rivals a David Lynch movie — in fact, Lynch even directed his own television spot back in the PlayStation 2 days, itself reminiscent of UNKLE’s “Rabbit in Your Headlights” music video from years before. This latest set of videos for the PS3 Slim in Japan is no exception. Turn off all the lights, raise the volume of your speakers, and bow down before the masters of unnerving gadget promotion just after the break — we included the Lynch ad, too, in case you were interested.

Look out, Slim: Xbox 360 Elite showing $299 in new Walmart ad

It was all but inevitable that Microsoft was going to hit back at the PS3 Slim with its own $299 120GB console, and while we’re still waiting on official confirmation Microsoft, this purported Walmart ad clipping sure seems to know where the Xbox 360 Elite is headed. Watch out, folks, the video games aisle at your local big box retailer is about to get spicy.

[Thanks, Randall]

Bell’s Palm Pre commercial couldn’t be more Apple if it had an Orba Squara soundtrack

Far from being creepy this time around, the latest Palm Pre ad — this one specifically for Bell’s Canadian customer base — is familiar. Very familiar. Plain white backdrop? Check. Peppy male narrator? Check. Hip, upbeat music? Check. Mysterious hands showing off mobile apps and other smartphone capabilities? Check. Side-by-side comparison videos after the break. Hey, at least this one isn’t gonna creep you out.

Update: Looks like someone read our minds and spliced the commercial with Orba Squara’s infamous “Perfect Timing” found in the iPhone ads. Video’s after the break.

CBS’s video ad for print not much better than its video ads for TV

Call us crazy, but this whole idea of embedding video in magazines (like we’ve seen on the cover of Esquire in the past) seems rather callous. Really, what better way is there to rub publishers’ noses in the “death of print media” than by taking a perfectly good magazine and embedding a TV commercial? Apparently CBS doesn’t see it that way, so they’re taking Americhip’s “multisensorizing” technology to an ad insert that will run in the September 18 issue of Entertainment Weekly. The ad, which will only be seen by subscribers in the New York and LA markets, plays about 40 minutes of video and, presumably, some crappy audio. We’ve tracked down a YouTube demo of the device (or similar), and although it does little to change our ornery opinion of the matter, we suppose that if it results in one more Ghost Whisperer fan it’ll be worth it. Decide for yourself after the break.

Palm’s bodhisattva says something meaningful in latest Pre ad

Having created an aura of surreal creepiness around its handset, Palm seems ready to talk about the Pre’s features (not just its feelings) in its latest video ad. Whether the change is in response to viewer unrest or a natural progression of the advertising campaign is unknown. But if princess waiffy pants could send a calendar late notification while pulling into a downward facing dog, well, that would be an ad worth watching. Maybe next time. Check the latest after the break.

Best Buy goes 3D, even augmented reality isn’t safe from advertising

In its never-ending quest to sell you more things, Best Buy has added augmented reality to its Sunday ads. The printed missives can now be used, in conjunction with a webcam and a purpose-built website, to create 3D representations of the latest product being pimped. Yes, it’s probably easier to walk to a store and handle the goods in person, but that’s hardly the point of AR now, is it? We’re not sure where to rank this effort in the pantheon of quirky promotional ideas, but we’ll give credit to the big box retailer for stepping outside itself and trying something new to separate you from your hard-earned cash.
