Vodafone Australia creates giant Android mascot, sets it free on the streets of Sydney

In the States it’s almost voting time and the posturing has certainly come to a fever pitch. If someone hasn’t come a knocking on your door yet, promising to fix whatever ails you, they surely soon will. So, it’s nice to see a representative going door-to-door without an ulterior motive… well, without a political one, anyway. Meet Andy, the full-scale Android mascot who can be found wandering the streets of Sydney in an attempt by Vodafone to get people more familiar with the little OS that could (and is). We’re thinking he’s more likely to scare small children than create converts out of competing smartphone users, but maybe our pollsters are reading this one wrong.

Official Kinect TV ads feature smiling actors, very large rooms, little else (video)

If you’re a fan of videos featuring commercial actors mugging for the camera and jumping around in a semi-comical manner, you are seriously in luck. That’s right, it looks like Ballmer and Co.’s $500 million marketing blitz has resulted in some totally spasmodic TV spots for the Kinect. As befits a technology that emphasizes movement over the controller itself, there is very little actual hardware shown — but boy, do those kids look like they’re having fun! Dell marketing makeover simplifies brands, kills off Adamo altogether

We knew something was going on with Dell’s branding with the resurrection of the XPS laptop line, and this morning we caught up with a few of the company’s executives to learn all about the entire restructuring. As you can see above, there will now be three core brands — Inspiron, XPS and Alienware — all focusing on different “performance seekers.” However, you’ll notice that Adamo is nowhere to be found on that flow chart. Turns out, the sneaky disappearance of the Adamo XPS from Dell’s site hasn’t exactly been a coincidence — it’s completely killing off the premium brand and has actually tamped down volumes of the super thin machines. Now, that doesn’t mean systems like the original Adamo and the Adamo XPS won’t exist ever again as Dell VP Ed Boyd tells us similar products will be coming to the XPS line early next year. Simplifying the brands sure does make a lot of sense to us — all the Adamo XPS, Studio XPS, Studio laptops have seriously confused us over the last couple of years — but it’s all part of a larger marketing campaign that will attempt to move Dell away from being a low cost brand and instead portray the company as providing choice — a campaign Dell CMO Paul-Henri Ferrand told Reuters will ultimately cost hundreds of millions of dollars. We look forward to seeing what you’ve got Dell, but all we know is that we’re finally going to say the following words with affirmation: “rest in peace, Adamo.”

Microsoft to spend one billion dollars advertising Kinect and Windows Phone 7

Microsoft’s serious about making Kinect a success. A $500 million kind of serious. That’s the latest report, courtesy of the New York Post, on the change Steve Ballmer and company intend to drop to make sure that every living and breathing creature in the US knows about the controller-free controller this holiday season. That mirrors earlier analyst estimates placing the Windows Phone 7 marketing budget at a similar figure, which in total would amount to a cool billion dollars in advertising expenditure. We already know Microsoft’s scooped the Old Spice Guy for WP7, but Kinect is getting the extra special carpet bombing treatment with Burger King, Pepsi, YouTube, Nickelodeon, Disney, Glee, Dancing with the Stars, People and InStyle magazines, and even Times Square all having a role to play in spreading the word. Yup, it’s gonna be pretty hard to miss it.

Pentax x nanoblock: 3D ads show off 3D customization

Gadget-lovers out there will likely already be familiar with the Optio NB1000 from Pentax, a camera partly made from the Lego-style nanoblock toys.

Out and about on a project recently we spotted this great advertisement for the camera, a leaflet that includes a free pair of 3D glasses.

The idea is that you use the glasses to look at the artwork on the flyer and admire the funky pictures of the cameras and nanoblock animals.

Not a bad incentive for a camera that, while it may not be able to shoot in 3D, can still be customized in all three dimensions!

RIM announces WebWorks development kit, in-app payments, ad platform, and BBM API

RIM’s BlackBerry Developer Conference is going down this week in San Francisco, and as you might expect from a developer-focused event, there are a handful of newsy items that’ll affect the development community first and consumers down the road. Here’s a roundup of what’s what:

  • WebWorks development platform. From what we’ve heard of this so far, it’s basically a quick way for web devs to get into the BlackBerry app game by offering a tightly-integrated platform for HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript code with hooks to native BlackBerry OS functions and a packager for turning them into “real” BlackBerry apps.
  • BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform. RIM’s historically held BBM very, very close to the chest, but it’s starting to open up a tad with this particular announce. Don’t look for BBM on other platforms (yes, we know that’s what some of you were hoping to hear), but third-party app developers will now be able to tap into the system for sending and receiving messages, files, user profiles, and invitations. Interestingly, the company is pitching it as a platform for multiplayer gaming, using BBM as a conduit to move information between devices in real time.
  • BlackBerry Advertising Service. Google bought AdMob and Apple bought Quattro, but RIM’s taking a more democratic approach to its advertising platform, allowing both “simple” and “rich media” ads to be served from a handful of providers “with only three lines of code.” It’ll be a 60 / 40 revenue split between devs and RIM.
  • BlackBerry Payment Service SDK. This one’s launching in beta this week, bringing third-party in-app payments over credit card, PayPal, and carrier billing (available on AT&T right now, more carriers by the end of the year). It’ll be out of beta before 2010’s out.

Nothing on the so-called BlackPad so far, but at any rate, seems like this roundup is great news for anyone looking to slide some content into App World over the next few months.

Wizup emerges from Windows Phone 7 developer challenge: think Shazam, but for ads

It’s not a brand new concept or anything, but rather than forcing mobile users to scan QR codes in order to access more information about a given product or advertisement, Wizup is able to recognize far more esoteric items. Created as a part of the Windows Phone 7 developer challenge, this piece of software is able to listen to radio stations (at least in France), understand images from magazines and even recognize TV channels. Simply snap a picture or let it listen in (much like Shazam for song titles), and it then delivers all sorts of germane content to the mobile’s screen. It’s a dream come true for marketers, but better still, it makes digging for more information a whole lot easier on the end user. HTC Mondrian stars in leaked AT&T ad campaign, jump-kicks lesser smartphones? (video)

Would you believe that after months of leaks, this is the first time we’ve allegedly seen the HTC Mondrian? It’s true — though from this angle, it’s a dead ringer for the Mozart, which looks just like the Shubert, too. The above picture comes from what appear to be a pair of mostly complete ads for AT&T’s Windows Phone 7 push, which if real make the Mondrian look like it might be a flagship device. Perhaps those rumors of a 1.3GHz Snapdragon inside weren’t too far off. You won’t find real phones demonstrated in the videos after the break, but don’t let that stop you from clicking through — you do like watching oblivious folks flying through the air, don’t you?

You can’t find Sony’s name anywhere on this bit of video; it’s a “viral” from Wolfbreeder, an LA ad firm that Sony can no-doubt distance itself from if it gets in trouble. But we won’t tattle: the video above, which has been described for you succinctly in the headline above, the video which you’ve no doubt already watched and forwarded to that one friend of yours who still plays Wii regularly, is frankly badass.
