Snow Leopard pre-orders now being taken at Amazon

We could’ve sworn it was already available for pre-order, but seeing as Google cache is telling us otherwise, we thought it best to give you a heads up that Amazon is now accepting monies for Mac OS X 10.6 a.k.a. Snow Leopard. Nothing new about the date and price from what we heard at WWDC this year, it’s still listed for September at $29. Five-user family pack is $49, Server version is $499, and you can bundle a single or five-user pack with iWork and iLife for $169 and $229, respectively. We don’t anticipate the OS being in short supply come launch, but if you need a peace of mind and Snow Leopard on day one, pull out your credit card and direct your browser Amazon’s way.

PlayStation 3 slim listing pops up on Amazon Germany

Here’s something fun to start your weekend with. Amazon’s German site now has a listing for “PlayStation 3 Konsole slim” from Sony Computer Entertainment, and really, it doesn’t take years of foreign language class to figure out that English translation. It’s listed as “platform independent” (har) and has its own Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN), but on the flip side, we’re lacking a picture, release date, or any other tangible details. Can’t say we’ve got a feel for the site’s track record on random listings, but after all the rumors and possible sightings as of late, it really makes ya wonder.

Update: In case you’re wondering about that picture that now appears in the listing, it looks like a fan render that a customer has uploaded to Amazon.

DJ Hero Renegade Edition now accepting callers, lists for $199.99

So how badly do you want that metallic DJ Hero turntable? The game’s official website is now directing your attention to GameStop and Amazon, both of which are now accepting pre-orders for the Renegade Edition (due to launch October 27th alongside the standard bundle) for just one copper Lincoln under $200. That’s a $80 premium over the regular bundle but does also include a stand / carrying case hybrid and a two-CD collection. Then again, it’s also well over the cost of the entire instrument bundle for Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour. Anyone gonna bite?

Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework

It seems we have yet another reason to volley complaints in Amazon’s directions. 17-year old high school student Justin Gawronski had apparently been taking electronic notes and annotations on his Kindle for a summer assignment on George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Yeah, you can probably guess where this is going — after the retailer remotely pulled the plug on that particular version of the book, Gawronski’s notes were lost in the ethers, rendered useless. The suit, which is seeking class action status, asks that Amazon be legally blocked from improperly accessing users’ Kindles in the future and punitive damages for those affected by the deletion — and if he asks nice, we’re pretty sure Jeff would write his teacher a note. Amazon Kindle design contest: now it’s your turn to decide who wins!

Our Kindle contest that we’re running in cooperation with our good friends at Adafruit Industries and Amazon has drawn to an epic conclusion, and there’s simply no other way to put it — we’re blown away. We received literally dozens upon dozens of incredible, art gallery-worthy entries and it was all but impossible to narrow them down to a group of finalists — but after an entire weekend of mulling, debating, and hand-wringing, we’ve done the dirty work and narrowed it down to a group of just twenty-three. Now, dear readers, the fate of five Kindles lies in your hands and your hands alone. The laser awaits.

So here’s what we need from you: pick your favorite by 11:59PM ET on Monday, August 3rd. That’s it. We’ll take the five top vote-getters and award each with a 6-inch Kindle engraved with their design — and of course, we’ll post pictures of the finished products before they go out to their lucky owners.

How an Apple Tablet Could Pit iTunes Against Amazon.com

With rumors piling up about a forthcoming Apple tablet, it appears more and more likely that such a device will emerge soon.

But what’s still unclear is how this gadget will set itself apart from Apple’s multimedia-savvy product line, including the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the scores of failed tablet PCs that have come and gone. Judging from the company’s past moves, we’re betting that Apple’s tablet will be a media-centric device, focused — at least in part — on shaking up the publishing industry.

Apple is already prepared to blow Amazon and other e-book makers out of the water with one key weapon: iTunes. Having served more than 6 billion songs to date, the iTunes Store has flipped the music industry on its head. It also turned mobile software into a lucrative industry, as proven by the booming success of the iPhone’s App Store, which recently surpassed 1.5 billion downloads. Apple has yet to enter the e-book market, and making books as easy to download as music and iPhone apps is the logical next step.

What can Apple do better with e-books? For textbooks or anthologies, Apple can give iTunes users the ability to download individual chapters, priced between a few cents to a few bucks each. It would be similar to how you can currently download individual song tracks from an album. It might even have the same earthshaking potential to transform an entire industry by refocusing it on the content people actually want instead of the bundles that publishers want them to buy. (Of course, Apple would likely offer the à-la-carte purchase model in addition to the option to purchase the entire book as one download — a more attractive option for shorter works such as novels.)

College students would love this: Teachers rarely assign an entire textbook, so they would save hundreds of dollars by downloading only a few chapters of each textbook. Apple is already popular in the education sector, so here’s even more money to milk from students, with the textbook industry worth an estimated $9.8 billion.

Sci-fi fans might only want one story from an anthology, or a historical researcher might target certain subjects. All Apple has to do to secure the book publishers’ enthusiastic cooperation is to offer them a generous cut of the revenues, like the 70 percent it currently offers app developers.

Other than having the upper hand with digital distribution, an Apple tablet can compensate for other e-book readers’ shortcomings. In a previous story, Wired.com polled students on their interest in Amazon’s large-format Kindle DX reader. Several of them said they couldn’t imagine ditching textbooks for a Kindle DX, foreseeing challenges with tasks such as notetaking, highlighting and switching between books while writing essays.

Assuming its computing powers and interface design are anything like the iPhone’s, a touchscreen tablet would make these student-oriented tasks as easy as a few swipes and taps — far more pleasant than clunking around with the Kindle’s cheap buttons and sluggish interface. Plus, we would imagine students would be able to type their papers on the tablet.

Then there’s the obvious: An Apple tablet would have color, making it better for displaying magazine pages, which could also be purchased through the iTunes Store. It wouldn’t be saddled with a slow e-ink screen, so it could display video and browse the web with aplomb.

Let’s not forget to mention the multitude of other tasks an Apple tablet will likely be able to perform if developers decide to code applications for it. Think along the lines of an interactive remote control to enhance the movie-viewing experience on your TV, or a music video player to accompany the tunes blasting from your stereo. Or, heck, even an album-cover display screen for you to gaze at while listening to music. There’s huge potential in a tablet if Apple can pull this off. The challenge lies in establishing the right partnerships. If Apple weaves e-books into the iTunes Store, will book publishers hop on board? Given Apple’s success in numbers, we think so.

As for a data provider, it would be even better if Apple could work with a carrier such as Verizon to subsidize the tablet, bringing it closer to $500 — a more attractive price point for students. Because the device presumably would not feature a phone, the monthly plans could be priced significantly lower than an iPhone — $30 to $40, perhaps, for an unlimited 3-G internet connection.

(An aside: We’re aware, as some of our colleagues have pointed out, that an à-la-carte e-book model is an idealistic prediction. A more conservative guess would be that e-books will be available, in full, in iTunes, which would nonetheless be advantageous against Amazon given the enormous amount of iTunes users. We are, however, hopeful that Apple would be the company to drive radical change with e-book pricing models, given its proven ability to twist partners’ arms.)

Jeff Bezos issues humble apology over pulled Kindle title

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wants you to know he’s really, really sorry for pulling Nineteen Eighty-Four off of our Kindles. In fact, the guilt expressed in this public apology is comparable to a modern day Dimmesdale — he may have even seared a mark into his flesh for all we know. The short message calls the company’s “solution” to what happened “stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles,” adding that he and the company “deserve the criticism we’ve received.” Look Jeff, we’re still gonna be appalled by these beyond the pale actions even if you say it won’t happen again… but if you really need a hug, we’ll be here.

I like books. No: I actually love books. In virtually every room in my home there are bookcases that are filled to overflowing. I like to purchase them, hold them as I read words written to inform, delight, and transport the reader into different times, new experiences, and enlighten them in ways they could not have imagined. Like the worst hot dog I’ve eaten and the worst beer I’ve drunk, the worst book I’ve read was wonderful… but books do have a downside. They’re bulky to store, hard to travel with (paper is really, really heavy), and paperbacks in particular tend to not hold up well over time. So, in addition to books, I’ve been a fan of e-Books. My former venture capital firm did one of the first investments in Peanut Press (long sold and re-sold many times and now owned by Barnes and Noble) and more than a decade ago I struggled with reading fiction by Dan Brown on a Palm V device with low resolution and on backlight. It was a struggle — but it was better than schlepping paper.

Amazon remotely deletes Orwell e-books from Kindles, unpersons reportedly unhappy (update)

If you’re into keeping tabs on irony, check this out. Amazon apparently sent out its robotic droogs last night, deleting copies of the George Orwell novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four from Kindles without explanation, then refunding the purchase price. As you can imagine, a lot of people caught in the thick of Winston and Julia’s love story aren’t very happy — and rightfully so — the idea that we “own” the things we buy is pretty fundamental to… ownership. We’re not sure exactly what happened, but it seems that the publisher of said novels, MobileReference, has changed its mind about selling content on the Kindle, and poof! Amazon remotely deleted all previously purchased copies. It’s all a bit Orwellian, is it not? Good thing we “permanently borrowed” hard copies of both from our middle school library, huh? Let Hate Week commence.

Update: According to commenters on Amazon, this message was sent out from the company’s customer service department:

The Kindle edition books Animal Farm by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) & Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) were removed from the Kindle store and are no longer available for purchase. When this occurred, your purchases were automatically refunded. You can still locate the books in the Kindle store, but each has a status of not yet available. Although a rarity, publishers can decide to pull their content from the Kindle store.

While that publisher’s version of the book may have been removed, it appears other versions of the novels are still available.

Update 2: Drew Herdener, Amazon.com’s Director of Communications, pinged us directly with the following comment, and now things are starting to make a lot more sense. Seems as if the books were added initially by an outfit that didn’t have the rights to the material.

These books were added to our catalog using our self-service platform by a third-party who did not have the rights to the books. When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers’ devices, and refunded customers. We are changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers’ devices in these circumstances.

Still, what’s upsetting is the idea that something you’ve purchased can be quietly taken back by Amazon with no explanation and no advance notice. It’s a rotten policy, regardless of the motivations behind this particular move.
