Samsung Galaxy with US 3G clears the FCC, but it’s not what you think

Feeling a little envious of the Android-based Samsung Galaxy now available in Germany and soon to be available in other parts of Europe? Then you’re in luck, sort of, as a new “A3LGTI7500L” model complete with US 3G has now sailed through the FCC. Unfortunately for those of us ’round these parts, that “L” at the end of the model name signifies that this particular model is intended for Latin America, but it’s still about as close as you’ll get to a practical option for the time being — at least until those T-Mobile rumors pan out.

Entelligence: Six is much too much

Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he’ll explore where our industry is and where it’s going — on both micro and macro levels — with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

Last week, fellow columnist Ross Rubin talked about the state of mobile platforms and how the era for launching new platforms has come to an end. I tend to take a different view of the mobile market. There are currently six major platforms vying for the hearts and minds of users and third party applications developers — RIM’s Blackberry, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, Apple’s iPhone, Nokia’s s60, Palm’s WebOS and Google’s Android — and there’s simply no way the market will support that many device ecosystems. But there may yet be opportunity for other players to enter the market.

This is not a new phenomenon. In the early 80s there were a multitude of personal computing platforms. Atari, Commodore, Radio Shack, Texas Instruments, Apple and even Timex (yes, Timex) all were in the personal computing business, long before IBM entered the game. All survived for a period of time selling to an enthusiast market with a focus on out of the box featuresets. Once the target became the mass market, however, user expectations changed from the out of box experience (which essentially meant programming in Basic) to additional capabilities provided by third party software. The success or failure of each PC platform was decided in no small part by the availability of third party software. Exclusive titles, best of breed titles, and titles that appeared on a given platform first determined winners and losers. The same thing is happening today in the mobile space.

Zii EGG prototype gets a hands-on demonstration

Our interest was fairly piqued last week when Creative officially unveiled the Zii Egg handheld which we’d seen earlier at the FCC. Details are still a bit vague in some areas, but we know that the Zii Egg is really aiming at developers for its “Plaszma” platform. The Zii Egg also runs Android, though will not come pre-installed on the device instead coming as a download once the device is shipping. CNET Asia just got a chance to have a sit down with a pre-production model of the handheld, and here’s what we’re noticing in the video. The hardware, which looks pretty great, doesn’t look very heavy or substantial to us — which is not to say it looks cheap. The 10-point multitouch capacitive touchscreen was not operable at the time of the demonstration, but it sure sounds promising, and there also wasn’t any real display of the software or applications as of yet. It looks like Creative will be filling its pre-orders for the Zii Egg in the second half of August, so we don’t have too long to wait to see what this thing is all about. Hit the read link for the video.

Motorola Sholes Android phone headed for Verizon?

On the lookout for the Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, “Sholes” is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn’t hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it’ll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn’t look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it, Morrison). See for yourself after the break.

Acer reaffirms that Android-based netbook still coming in Q3

In an effort to quell all sorts of kicking and screaming that resulted from an evidently erroneous report earlier in the week, an Acer representative has reportedly reaffirmed that an Android-based Aspire One is still on schedule for a Q3 release. If you’ll recall, we first heard of Acer’s intentions to dole out an Android-laden netbook during Computex, and now it seems as if those very plans are still perfectly on track. So there you have it, folks — no need to keep pounding those heart medications.

Motorola Morrisson with T-Mobile 3G and UMA hits the FCC

Well well, what’s this? Seems a certain Uncle Sam’s been poking around the lab with the Android-powered Motorola Morrison, and published his findings to the “World Wide Web.” And hey — are those T-Mobile 3G bands with UMA support we see in these action-packed RF reports? Why yes, they are — too bad Sam didn’t see fit to include any actual pictures of his new toy. Still, we’ve got a feeling this is one unreleased Motorola we’ll be getting our hands on real soon.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G preorders now shipping, arriving, being touched

If you’ve preordered one o’ them fancy new myTouch 3Gs, check your mailbox, front porch, back door, administrative assistant, or dirty, thieving neighbor — because it might be there. T-Mobile said that preorders would be shipping at the tail end of July, and sure enough, some folks are starting to get lucky; plebes without preorders will still need to wait until August 5, though, so, you know, either sit there and drool or shout nasty remarks about how you’d rather have a Hero in the meanwhile.

[Thanks, sun]

Video: Creative Zii EGG 3D gaming demo

Now that the gang at Creative have ‘fessed up to the Zii EGG first seen at the FCC earlier this month, we imagine we’ll be encountering this bad boy quite often over the coming months. If you need your StemCell Computing fix right now, we have a video that showcases the newest developer platform running a racing game in all of its accelerometer-packing, 3D OpenGL ES-enhanced glory. Peep for yourself after the break.

Philips V808 smartphone to run Android-based OPhone OS on China Mobile

Well, at least some of the mystery is solved. If a machine translated source is to be believed — not to mention a healthy gathering of screengrabs — Philips’ elusive V808 smartphone will be a China Mobile exclusive. As with other Android-based phones on the operator, it’ll be the reworked OPhone OS handling the dirty work, which basically means a carrier-customized app market and a few other tweaks that seem to be frowned upon in the Chinese community. We’re also told that the phone will lack support for 3G, WiFi and multitouch, leaving us grieved, lugubrious and lachrymose. C’mon guys — why hamstring a good thing?

Verizon Confirms Palm Pre, New Android Handset

palm_pre

The drumbeat around Palm Pre’s availability on the Verizon Wireless network had been steadily getting louder in the last few weeks. And now Verizon has confirmed that Sprint’s exclusive stranglehold on the Pre is unlikely to last beyond the end of the year.

“We plan to offer the Palm Pre early next year,” Dennis Strigl, president and chief operating officer of Verizon told analysts on a conference call late Monday.

Palm made the Pre available starting June 6 exclusively on Sprint’s wireless network. The handset costs $300, excluding a $100 rebate on a two-year contract and has gathered fairly positive reviews for its design, ability to multi-task and offer an integrated contacts and browsing experience. Sprint and Palm haven’t disclosed how long the exclusive deal between the two carriers. Now it is certain that Verizon will get its hands on the device soon.

Verizon is also promising to offer other new handsets in the next few months. The company plans to refresh the Storm later this year, said Strigl.

There’s also an Android handset on the way. “Android is on our roadmap,” said Strigl. “We have a great device lineup.”

But will the combined power of the Pre, Storm and an Android phone at Verizon be enough to fight Apple and AT&T’s iPhone?
