Syte Shirt redesigns iPad-toting version, introduces smartphone edition

Look, it’s not embarrassing. We too are waltzing around the dinner table, iPad Syte Shirt on, with a slideshow of pilgrims and Tofurkys to really “showcase our spirit.” But what about the jubilant among us that aren’t about to part ways with their hard-earned clams in order to pick up an iPad? Enter the Smartphone Syte Shirt. Like the original, this all-black shirt is handmade in San Diego, but very much unlike the original, this one’s designed to hold your iPhone, Droid Incredible or whatever handset you so happen to own. Better still, there’s a zippered pouch at the top to prevent theft, and both landscape and portrait orientations are duly supported. The screen protector still accepts finger touches, and it’s both dust and water resistant — you know, in case your jealous bandmates decide to douse you when you refuse to remove it before heading out on stage. Hit the source link to order yours for $39.95. Seriously, do it. No one’s watching.

Nielsen: 31 percent of kids want an iPad, other stuff

Hey look, a chart with the iPad on top. Aren’t statistics fun? And yet, this chart may not mean quite what you think it does. The Nielsen Company presented a cadre of individuals with a list of nice, shiny gadgets and let them cross off anything and everything they’d like to buy in the next six months, and 31 percent of kids 6-12 picked the iPad as one of them. That doesn’t mean these youngsters wanted the iPad any more than a game console, mind you, it just means more of them picked the tablet than any other single game console on the list. Also, it turns out that the iPad was the only tablet PC available, so it could well have served as a proxy vote for other slates — Galaxy Tab, anyone? The survey results also don’t factor in ownership, so if the Xbox 360’s low on the buy list, it could be because respondents already have one… but we suppose this is the definitive proof we’ve been searching for that e-readers are on the outs in the 12-and-under crowd. Jeff Bezos is crying over his evening oatmeal right now. After the break, see what the same chart looks like for teenagers and adults. (Hint: they aren’t all that hot on handhelds.)

Delta’s JFK terminal now home to 200 iPads, a few more enticing eateries

America can’t say that it wasn’t sniped by Malaysia Airlines when it comes to having iPads in the airport, but we’ll take late over never any day of the week. New York’s JFK airport is now home to 200 iPad tablets, all of which are located within Delta’s terminal. They’re being installed in cooperation with OTG Management, mostly in eateries — “Croque Madame, a French restaurant at Gates 21 and 22 in Terminal 2; and Bar Brace, a casual Italian restaurant at Gate 15 in Terminal 3.” As you’d expect, customers can order food from the iPad in order to have it delivered directly to them. It lacks that certain Sonic Drive-In appeal, but the ability to also use the iPad to check your email, have a look at the latest sports scores and attempt to jailbreak it for the next patron more than compensates. OTG doesn’t plan to put a time limit on the usage here (you’ll still need to make your connecting flight, remember?), and its hoping to engage in a similar installation over at LaGuardia in due time. No word on whether these things will censor any and all Google searches on “uncomfortable TSA pat-downs,” though.

iOS 4.2 review (for iPad)

If you’re an iPad owner, you’ve probably been on pins and needles lately. That’s because back in September, Apple announced that a full-scale update to the tablet’s OS would be coming in the form of iOS 4.2, bringing a slew of new features to the device. Included in that laundry list is proper iOS 4-style multitasking, folders, major mail improvements, Game Center integration, and Safari enhancements (like find-in-page text searches). Besides those features, the company has been touting two other big changes that could cause a major shift in the way you use your iPad — namely, AirPrint and AirPlay. Both additions leverage your WiFi network, certain connected printers, and the new Apple TV in an attempt to make the company’s slate less like a distraction and more like the center of your digital life.

When the update was originally announced, we took you on a walkthrough of the early developer beta. Though 4.2 will roll out to the iPhone and iPod touch, we wanted to focus on the iPad version, as it represents a major change for the platform. We’ve had a chance to spend time with the final version of the OS (which is actually 4.2.1 now), and put it through its paces. We’ve updated our original guide and given the finished product a critical once over, so read on for our full review!

TiVo Premiere UI gets a shot in the arm with iPad remote control

TiVo Premiere users won’t have to be jealous of Comcast’s Xfinity TV remote for very long — soon enough, they’ll have an DVR-scheduling, content-searching, program-pushing iPad app of their own. Called the TiVo Premiere App, it’ll feature a full touchscreen TV programming guide, playback controls, and the ability to search Netflix and Amazon on Demand for shows when it arrives “in the coming weeks.” There’s also basic social network sharing via Facebook and Twitter, and if that “Livingroom TiVo” drop-down menu is any indication, the ability to control multiple TiVo boxes from a single tablet. Also, the search box and remote icons in the upper-right hand corner that suggests that TiVo’s integrated the iPad keyboard and some virtual buttons too, so maybe you’ll be able to exercise control over the entire experience without diving into your couch (or your pocketbook) for a TiVo Slide Remote. One can only hope. No word on smartphone versions, though. PR and another shot of the interface right after the break.

Orange and T-Mobile set to offer 3G iPad on contract in UK, £200 price rumored

Orange has just dropped a rather enigmatic note in our inbox letting us know that it plans to offer Apple’s 3G iPad on “one of [its] great new plans” in the UK, resulting in what the company promises will be “more affordable prices.” Current rumors making the rounds place that expenditure at the £200 ($320) mark, should you be willing to commit to a two-year data plan to go with your 10-inch tablet. It’s also expected that Orange’s new dance partner, T-Mobile, will be making a similar announcement soon, complete with a matching price. We’ll keep digging until we know for sure. Full PR after the break.

Update: Sure enough, T-Mobile is now also listing the iPad as “coming soon.” Thanks, Dilwar!

FT subsidizes employee iPads, wants them to keep up with the times

You know tablets have officially become a mainstream craze when even the reserved, serious types over at the Financial Times start splashing subsidies around to stimulate their ownership. We’ve just heard that a $480 purse of gold coins will be extended to any FT workers who decide to purchase an iPad or another tablet between now and the end of June 2011, reportedly in an effort to help the paper’s staff become “expert and experienced in using them.” We already knew the FT, which happens to have its own iPad and Galaxy Tab apps, saw slate devices as an important piece of the puzzle that is our future, and this move cements that attitude in place. Paper’s dead, long live electronics-filled plastic.

Comcast Xfinity remote for iPad does streaming video, we record some for you (video)

If you’ve got Comcast service and an iOS device, there’s no reason you can’t download the brand spanking new Xfinity TV DVR remote app right now, but it won’t have the software’s spiffiest feature — direct-to-device streaming video. That’s set to roll out in either “a couple of weeks” or “by the end of the year,” depending on which Comcast representative you ask, and we got to try it for ourselves (along with the rest of the app) at the Web 2.0 Summit this week. Right now the featureset is fairly limited — you just pick programs from a guide and either watch them, beam them to your TV, or tell your DVR to record — but what is there was leagues more intuitive than a physical remote and about as responsive as we could hope for. Comcast tells us that Apple itself helped insure the user experience was polished, and it showed in every swipe and tap we made. Find out more and watch the app in action after the break!

SlingPlayer arrives in Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, headed to iPad next (updated)

Got yourself a big new Windows Phone 7 device and need something to fill its screen with? Sling Media has your back with its SlingPlayer Mobile app, which has hit the Marketplace just in time to earn its Launch App Partner achievement. Pricing for the software is set at $30 in the US, C$32 in Canada, £23 in the UK, and €21.10 in Europe plus local tax, though you’ll obviously need to have a Slingbox to communicate with as well. It ain’t cheap, but good things rarely are.

Update: We’ve also just come across a signup page for news updates on an iPad version of SlingPlayer Mobile. It’ll be priced identically to the company’s smartphone offerings, at $30, and looks to be coming soon. Thanks, Blake!

Verizon iPad commercial hits the air

You didn’t think Verizon would start selling its iPad / MiFi bundle without an ad blitz, did you? Big Red’s running a new commercial called “Breakaway” that features a dude using the combo to tear down the walls of his unfurnished home and wind up sitting alone on a bluff in a plastic chair. The magic of iPad, the power and reliability of Verizon. Video after the break.

[Thanks, Nick]
