Victorian Beckham’s $35,000 iPhone

beckham iphone.jpg

Posh Spice spent your year’s salary on an iPhone. Yep, you know those crazy gold-covered iPhones that we always assume no one actually buys? Victoria Beckham apparently owns one. The iPhone 4 (called, oddly the iPhone 4G on the outfitter’s site) is covered in 150 grams of 24 carat gold. It apparently takes weeks to craft and runs £21,995.00 ($35,354.76).

The 36-year-old former Spice Girl was flipping through the absurdly expensive handset after landing in JFK, when the paparazzi did what paparazzi do. The handset has a half-naked image of her husband, soccer star David Beckham, on the desktop. It also appears to be 75 percent covered with a case–because when you buy a $35,000 phone, the last thing you want to do is show it off to everyone.

Vatican: iPhone Confession App Can’t Replace Real Thing

confessiona app iphone.jpg

Remember that new confession app we told you about yesterday? Senior church officials in the U.S. were pretty keen on the thing, giving “Confession: A Roman Catholic App” the thumbs up. The Vatican, however, wants to clear something up.

Vatian spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told the press, “One cannot speak in any way of confessing via iPhone.” The confessor and a priest have to be in the same room for the whole confession thing to work, apparently. He added, “This cannot be substituted by any IT application.”

The app itself is intended to supplement, not replace in-person confession.

iPod Classic Still a Top Media Player

Apple_iPod_Classic.jpg

I still have an iPod classic. Not sitting in a desk drawer back in my apartment–I’ve got the thing on my person at pretty much all times. It’s my primary media player, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Hey, I’m the kind of person who likes to have 120GB of music on him at all times. I honestly never know when I’m going to need to listen to some Norwegian black metal or Nigerian electric highlife. It’s my cross the bear.

It’s nice to hear that I’m not alone in this. According to new numbers from the analysts at NPD, the iPod classic is still one of the most popular music players. The hard drive-based player was the fifth best-selling media player for 2010–following four different iterations of the iPod touch (not surprisingly, all but one of the players–a 4GB Sandisk model–were iPods).

The 160GB classic was the only hard drive based player to make the list. Apple has been long rumored to be canceling the product–but such a move would likely require the introduction of an iPod touch with similar capacities–or, perhaps, the introduction of the long-rumored cloud-based version of iTunes (a result of the company’s Lala purchase), which would relieve some of the need for a massive amount of storage on the portable device.

Apple has certainly taken nearly all focus away from the player, which has, admittedly, lost a little bit of its luster in the face of shiny new touch and nano models, but the classic line has quietly carried on. As long as it continues to be a leader in the space, it’s likely not going away any time soon.

iPad 2 in Production – Rumor

ipad 2 ces.JPG

The iPad 2 is real. We sort of new that already, right? That we’ve seen the countless rumors and confirmations, coupled with the fact that Apple likes to keeps its devices on a more or less yearly schedule, leads us to feel pretty confident that the thing is coming pretty soon.

Hardware parts, leaked video, and stray sightings have been cropping up everywhere lately, including, memorably, CES and a recent launch for New Corps’s The Daily iPad newspaper. Also, that weird Elton John thing….

The latest word is that the upcoming version of the popular tablet has apparently just gone into production, according to the proverbial “people familiar with the matter,” says The Wall Street Journal.

According to the paper, the iPad 2 will be thinner and later than its predecessor all will feature better graphics, more memory, and “at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing.” No real revelations there. Oh well.

Verizon iPhone 4 now available to order / reserve for in-store pickup

Apple and Verizon’s long-awaited partnership is nearly upon us, folks, and the final piece to the puzzle is general availability of the hallowed iPhone 4. You’re now able to order or reserve your own at the online stores of both carrier and phone maker, though shipping dates for early orders are listed at a distant February 18th. We’d just reserve one and go down to our nearest physical outlet to pick it up tomorrow.

Rumor: Apple Starts Production of iPad 2

Apple has started production of a thinner, lighter and faster version of the iPad, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Citing the usual “people familiar with the matter,” WSJ claims the new iPad will include front- and rear-facing cameras for videoconferencing and shooting photos, similar to the iPhone 4.

The WSJ added that cellular data plans will be available for the iPad 2 through Verizon and AT&T.

The report echoes similar rumors about the next iPad published by multiple publications in the past.

Tech observers expect the next iPad to be released this spring, since the first model was released April 2010.

iPad Immigrant Smuggling Game Submitted to App Store

smuggle truck.jpg

Apple’s infamous App Store vetting process is set to come under fire yet again, with the pending release of Smuggle Truck: Operation Immigration, an iPhone/iPad game that revolves around the smuggling of immigrants across the US-Mexican border.

Alex Schwartz, the Owlchemy Labs developer behind the title claims to have been inspired by his own friends who had trouble making it over the border. “As we lived through a painful 12 months of our friend struggling through the absurd legal minefield that surrounds U.S. immigration, we felt that we should create a game that touches on the issue,” says Schwartz.

Not surprisingly, the game is being met with all manner of criticism, claiming that the title trivializes the hot button topic. The game is due out in March, pending approval. Trailer after the jump.

WSJ: iPad 2 in production, features FaceTime camera, faster processor

Oh look, what’s this? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the iPad 2 has entered production — which exactly lines up previously rumored manufacturing schedules. According to the WSJ, the new edition of Apple’s tablet will have a faster processor with a better GPU and more memory in a thinner, lighter package. There’s also said to be a front-facing camera for video conferencing, but the much-discussed display resolution will remain “similar” to the current iPad — which actually goes along with the most recent information we’ve gotten from our sources, who say that the next iPad will indeed stay at the current resolution, and that the higher-res display we’d heard about earlier may have actually been for a future model. As for availability, the WSJ says the new iPad will be on Verizon and AT&T, which certainly makes sense — although it’ll be interesting to see how Verizon handles positioning it against the upcoming Xoom, which Motorola is marketing in an aggressively anti-iPad manner. In any event, between the iPad 2, the Xoom, and whatever Palm has to offer tomorrow, this spring is about to get very, very interesting.

LA lovers of things that Keep it Real Fake, finding your next knockoff might be a little harder than anticipated. The Los Angeles police just busted a warehouse full of knock-offs, things like GiPhones, iPhoncs, PNPs, and Poops. Among all this junk, some $10 million worth, two dudes were found and arrested — two dudes who had records showing more than $7 million in profits. It seems KIRFing does pay, for a little while at least.
