Windows Phone 7’s live tiles turned into a pretty convincing iOS theme (video)

Had enough of seeing grids and folders of static (Calendar app excluded, of course) icons on your iDevice? Well, here’s one option to relieving your tedium: a Windows Phone 7 theme for the iPhone and iPod touch. You’ll naturally need to jailbreak your iOS handheld in order to restyle it quite so dramatically, but once you do, you’ll have all your precious apps sorted in a neat alphabetical pile on one screen, with the other waiting patiently for your customizations and live tile choices. It’s a good looking little mod, we have to say, and it’s currently going through beta testing, so why not grab your iPhone and see if it can survive a lick of Microsoft paint without self-combusting?

Sanho announces new HyperDrive line-up, still enough storage for your Frank Zappa discography

Surely you remember Sanho’s HyperDrive lineup — ya know, the only portable HDD that plays nicely with the iPad? Well, if you don’t dig the $249 entry level price, you’re in luck. The company just announced a bunch of new HDDs for you to take with you and your iPad on that road trip you’ve had planned for years. As we saw at CES, the new drives no longer sport the QVGA color display or the CF and SD card slots — instead, the black case has two mini USB ports and a power socket. The HyperDrive doesn’t come with the traditional AC adapter but instead a USB-to-DC cable and the user-replaceable battery will allow up to 40GB of transfers on a single charge. And if you’re wondering why there’s two USB ports, we really couldn’t tell you. Perhaps if you choose the right port while connected to your PC and enter the Konami code, unicorns and fairy dust will pop out of your screen — wishful thinking, we know. The HyperDrives ship in March (pre-ordering is available now) with prices starting at $99 for a bring-your-own-drive housing, 1TB for $349 and various sizes in-between. So, if your photo/video library is worth accessing at all times, well, props to you. Press release is after the break.

Verizon turns on iPhone 4 pre-order countdown, existing customers can order on February 3rd at 3AM

The grapevine did already hint at the timing of the Verizon iPhone 4 pre-orders, but now, to be absolutely sure nobody misses them, we have a countdown! Eager iPhone bandwagon jumpers will have to stay up till 3AM EST on February 3rd to get their orders in from a “reserved quantity” of handsets, which will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis — presumably to be delivered on that February 10th launch date everyone’s been anticipating for so long. Sadly for Verizon newcomers, a contract with the network will be a prerequisite for signing up when the countdown expires.

[Thanks, Jarrett and Anthony]

How Angry Birds Is Becoming the Next Super Mario

You can’t go a day without hearing someone mention Angry Birds.

Fans on Twitter share pictures of cakes they decorated with the Angry Birds characters. On YouTube, parents post videos of their kids playing Angry Birds in real life. Even talk show hosts like Conan O’Brien can’t resist cracking a joke about the game every night.

The game’s creator Rovio on Friday announced a new game, Angry Birds Rio, based on a movie made by Fox. (See teaser images below.)

The game is so ubiquitous it’s almost obnoxious. Some tech observers previously dubbed Angry Birds the new Pac-Man, but that wasn’t enough for the game’s makers.

“What we’re doing is we’re building out the Angry Birds world,” said Peter Vesterbacka, whose business card title reads “Mighty Eagle” of Rovio. “Pac-Man is only one game. Mario is a better benchmark.”

Angry Birds first appeared in Apple’s iPhone App Store in December 2009. Since then, the game has expanded to multiple devices, including the iPad, Android phones and the Sony PlayStation Portable, amassing over 75 million downloads to date, according to Rovio. The majority of sales comes from the App Store, where Angry Birds has consistently ranked a best seller.

Angry Birds accentuates the business opportunity unlocked by the iTunes App Store, Apple’s digital-distribution platform for selling third-party apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Launched in summer of 2008, the App Store’s friction-free business model proved to be a new digital frontier where software programmers big and small had an opportunity to make serious money, whereas before, hobbyist coders were no match to major game studios and their colossal marketing budgets.

In the App Store, some programmers have netted hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales with clever games, software utilities and DIY social marketing. Apple recently announced that iOS customers surpassed 10 billion app downloads.

But Angry Birds was not a small-team effort, nor was its success a lucky strike. Based in Finland, the Rovio game studio that makes Angry Birds has 40 employees and expects to expand to 100 by the end of this year.

Angry Birds was actually the studio’s 52nd published game, and its 16th originally created game, according to Mikael Hed, Rovio’s CEO. He said the game’s success was carefully engineered with physics-based gameplay that made it easy to learn, while creating depth for advanced players in later stages. Add to that very cute characters and sounds, and a polished design, and you have a big hit.

Educational Games We Want on Our iPhone

When we heard news that Where in the World is Carmen San Diego, and Oregon Trail are coming to Facebook, we couldn’t help but get a bit nostalgic–that’s really the whole point, right? Well, besides teaching a whole new generation about the importance of rationing buffalo meat before fording a river.
So we asked the PCMag staff to continue the trip down memory lane by picking out a long-lost edutainment favorite they’d love to have on their iPhone. After the jump, check out their picks–and a few titles that, much to our delight, have already made their way onto the popular smartphone.

Watch the Egyptian Revolution Unfold on Your iPhone

The Egyptian government has shut down 88 percent of the country’s internet access amid mass protests. If you’re on the road and away from a computer, fortunately there’s a free iPhone app to tune in to the latest developments.

Available in the App Store, international news network Al Jazeera has a free iOS app with live coverage of the protests, so you can watch the Egyptian revolution unfold on your phone. The app features access to news articles, photos and live video of the protests. It’s a really quick, snappy app to keep up with the news.

Meanwhile, for up-to-date news of the Egyptian protests, follow Wired.com’s coverage at the Danger Room blog.

Verizon iPhone Trade-In May Not Be the Best Choice

Thumbnail image for verizon iphone press 3.jpg

To add even more AT&T iPhone customers to the already large amount of people switching phone services to Verizon in order to get the iPhone 4, Verizon is letting some AT&T customers trade in their iPhones for credit when they buy a new Verizon iPhone 4 and sign up for a two-year contract. It may seem like a good idea, but WalletPop.com’s Aaron Crowe points out that the trade-in value isn’t as much as the amount the same phone could sell for on the secondary market.

Crowe said in the article that various iPhones in excellent condition could be sold at Gazelle.com, for example, for $15 to $80 more than the credit that Verizon is offering towards a new phone. So, ultimately, you have to decide whether you’re willing to go through the hassle to sell your phone on a secondary market and get more for it, or just take the easy route and have AT&T throw you some credit towards your new phone.

Either way, if you’re dropping AT&T you’re going to have to pay the $325 early termination fee, and there’s no way around that.

WalletPop lists the trade-in prices Verizon is offering, followed by the latest price at Gazelle.com for the same phone in excellent condition:

  • iPhone 2G 16GB: $60 at Verizon; $80 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 3G 16GB: $105 at Verizon; $120 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 3Gs 32GB: $160 at Verizon; $180 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 4 16GB: $280 at Verizon; $360 at Gazelle
  • iPhone 4 32GB: $360 at Verizon; $420 at Gazelle

So, the choice is yours. Ultimately, you’re loosing money by breaking your AT&T contract. The question is, do you want to loose more money, or slightly less money?

Twelve South’s BookArc for Air stand cozies up around your MacBook Air

Twelve South’s made somewhat of a name for itself by crafting unexpected (and generally visually pleasing) accessories for everything Apple, but the ouftit’s latest just seems particularly superfluous. The BookAir for Air is described as a vertical stand for the MacBook Air, enabling you to hoist your new ultraportable upright for use with a desktop monitor and keyboard. ‘Course, we have to believe that only a smattering of individuals have any real interest in using their MBA as a desktop replacement, but hey, at least there’s now a stand should you fit into that category. She’ll be on sale soon for $39.99, with initial shipments to head out next month.

It was bound to happen, right? Sure, we won’t be seeing the real Steve Jobs until he returns from his latest medical leave, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t reflect on some of his greatest moments via the magic of Autotune, right?
Video of Jobs’s iPhone announcement in all of its Autotune glory, after the jump. Just ’cause.

IDC: ZTE takes fourth in global cellphone rankings, leapfrogs Apple and knocks RIM out of top 5

You like numbers? Good, because it’s the season and amid all these lovely financial reports we’ve been hitting there are some broader trends to look at. IDC has released its mobile phone report for 2010 and has concluded that, worldwide, the industry grew 18.5 percent over 2009, shipping a massive 1.39 billion units. That’s nice and all, but check out this bit about ZTE. The manufacturer boosted its annual shipments by 94 percent, stealing Apple’s recently-won fourth place position globally and, in doing so, knocking RIM straight into the dreaded “others” category. Can RIM make it back? Will Apple recover? Will Siobhan and Lucky ever reconcile their differences? Tune in next quarter to find out.
