UK iBookstore surprise: premium content appears

UK's iBookstore gets some premium content, contrary to earlier statements

The iPad has officially hit Europe today (though some lucky duckies got theirs a bit early), and contrary to earlier descriptions of the iBookstore as being “US only” it seems UK virtual bookshelves are now receiving some decidedly in-copyright texts to fill in the gaps between the dusty, out-of-copyright volumes previously available. Prices are displayed in the local currency, nice for those living in fear of the NWO, and purchases are made in just two taps. So, UK owners, download yourself a new book, find a comfy chair, pour a nice cuppa, and enjoy your weekend with your new toy.

Wi-Fi Sync now compatible with Windows and iPad

Wi-Fi Sync is quite the gem (at least we think so) but it had some limitations — namely, it only worked on OS X for desktop, and only with iPhone / iPod touch. Developer Greg Hughes pinged us earlier today to let us know he’s thrown the gates off such restrictions. The jailbroken app now works for both iPads and Windows — XP, Vista, and 7. The desktop client is free to download but it still cost just a hair under $10 for the appropriate mobile device. Worth the price of breaking free from wires? Your call.

NBC and Time Warner inform Apple they’ll be sticking to Flash, thank you very much

When the iPad bandwagon was launched in late January, ABC and Netflix quickly jumped onboard with tailor-made apps, while CBS and others started transitioning their content to HTML5-compliant formats, all in the name of not being left behind by the revolution. As it turns out, however, some content providers will be letting this ride pass them by, at least for the moment. The New York Post today reports that big media heavyweights Time Warner and NBC Universal have turned their noses up at the iPad’s high entry demands and will be sticking to what works:

Sources said several large media companies, including Time Warner and NBC Universal, told Apple they won’t retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad, arguing that such a reformatting would be expensive and not worth it because Flash dominates the Web.

According to the NYP article, these conglomerates have been emboldened by the forthcoming arrival of competing tablets from the likes of Dell and HP, and will be seeking their fortunes in the mobile space atop Adobe’s winged stallion of web domination that we commonly know as Flash. This is a decision sure to end in tears — we just don’t know who’ll be doing the crying when it all shakes out.

iPad wall mounts take a turn for the crazier (video)

Wall mounts have been around since forever and a day, but let’s be honest, they’ve never had something quite like an iPad to cling on to. And now a couple of enthusiastic tablet users have gone and concocted their own homemade articulating display stands, showing how easily it can be done. Al forwards the gallery of pics below, telling us he only had to buy a standard VESA TV mount and an iPad case (costing around $40 in total), screw the two together, and boom, his son had an iPad “bed mount.” Alternatively, if you’re after a more sophisticated solution, you’ll want to see dim3m’s video after the break, showing how he put together the above speaker-enriched platform. Go ahead, there’s a banging soundtrack too.

[Thanks, Al and dim3m]

iPads arriving a day early in UK

People, calm yourselves! Our inbox has been overflowing with excited Brits telling us their iPads are either en route or already delivered, a whole Earthly day ahead of the promised May 28 launch. We’re sure the UK is not alone, as we’ve already witnessed an unboxing video from Italy claiming to be the first to take delivery in Europe, so consider this a friendly reminder if you’re expecting to receive a magical device in the near future: objects in your Apple shopping basket may be closer than they appear.

Apple will open international Stores early for iPad launch this Friday, iBooks app available now

Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn’t mean it’s not benevolent. The iPad’s international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterix up there points us to an ominous “while supplies last” note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier. UK buyers will get an alternative option thanks to Dixons Group stocking Apple’s slate in Currys and PC World outlets, an arrangement that we keep hearing might be exclusive for the first sixty days after launch. Either way, you’ve been warned, don’t be tardy if you wanna be trendy.

P.S. The iBooks app has also made its debut outside of the US today, though at present it’s limited to just freebie titles, and the iBookstore is still described as “US only.”

Update: The latest we’re hearing is that at least some Apple Premium Resellers will also be getting stock of the iPad in the UK — worth checking out if other options sell out.

PLX USB Duet: your netbook is now a cumbersome iPad keyboard

We preface this post by saying we don’t know how practical this really is, but PLX’s idea of using a netbook’s keyboard to type on the iPad is definitely an intriguing one. How does it all work? Well, it relies on the company’s USB Duet technology, but the setup isn’t exactly what we’d call streamlined. You’ll need a netbook like the Fujitsu MH380 or NEC LaVie Light with the built-in PLX chipset / mini-USB port, an iPad with the camera connection kit, and of course the applicable USB Duet software. Regardless, the demo we saw today at the Netbook Summit worked fairly well. When all was said and done, we laid the iPad on top of the netbook’s screen and we were able to use the keyboard to type in Safari and in Notes faster than when we were pecking on the virtual keyboard. Additionally, PLX says the same USB feature enables you to use the netbook’s speakers as well as transfer files from the iPad to the laptop without iTunes (we should note here that USB duet also allows you to hook up a netbook to other laptops to transfer files, etc.). Truth is, we could debate the value of this iPad hook-up for quite a few hours, but instead we’ll just direct you to the video and press release after the break, and then let you duke it out for yourselves in the comments.

Apple iPad shipments now getting hopes up in UK and Australia

Heads up! We’ve gotten a ton of tips from our friends across the pond and down under that Apple’s now sending shipment notifications for those who pre-ordered the iPad — both the 3G and WiFi-only models, from what we’ve seen — about one week before that famed May 28 international launch date. Now, before you start thinking you need to take off work a few days earlier, don’t forget that those in the US also got notifications a week before release and still no one got an early present. In other words, just be happy knowing all systems are go and your productivity is still likely to be shot on Wednesday.

Analyst: Apple selling more iPads than Macs, at the moment

So there’s no question that Apple is selling a ton of iPads, but would you have guessed that it’s actually selling more iPads than all Mac sales combined? That’s the case, at least at the moment, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that Apple is currently moving about 200,000 iPads per week, compared to 110,000 Macs — though it still trails the iPhone, which is apparently racking up sales of 246,000 per week. Of course, we are just talking about analyst estimates here, and things could potentially swing back into the Mac’s favor once the quarterly totals are added up. If true, however, it’d sure be a whopper of a milestone — one that we’d no doubt be hearing plenty more about in, say, three weeks time.
