LaCie ships USB 2.0 Slim Blu-ray external burner for $265

Still slinging a laptop with USB 2.0? Fret not, as that’s all the bandwidth you need to handle LaCie‘s Slim Blu-ray burner. As the title implies, the new unit is little more than a nicely styled external BD burner, designed to tag along with your ODD-less netbook / ultraportable and provide Blu-ray burner / viewing enjoyment at a moment’s notice. $264.99 gets you the device itself, CyberLink’s Blu-ray Disc Suite and a two-year warranty, and if you’re curious about toasting speeds, it’ll write to a BD-R at 6x (dual-layer at 4x), a BD-RE at 2x and a blank DVD at 8x. The rest of the nitty-gritty, as well as a purchase link, awaits you in the source.

Panasonic officially launches exclusive Avatar Blu-ray 3D pack-in, discs hit $400+ on eBay

Panasonic has finally made official several pack-in deals already in effect at retailers both physical and online that add Blu-ray 3D players, glasses and most notably, an exclusive copy of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D (also available to existing owners via a mail-in offer, owners of the Extended Collectors Edition can preview a 3D Easter Egg there too.) Despite being the highest grossing 3D movie of all, it’s still not available at retail and is unlikely to show up there anytime soon, sending the price of those pack-in copies skyrocketing on eBay as owners of non-Panasonic 3D capable TVs try to get their hands on the ultimate demo material. Many current auctions are above the $200 mark, while the highest sold price we saw was $399 about a week ago, although considering a copy of Bee Movie went for $400 back in the day, we can’t say we’re too surprised. Check out the details about Panasonic’s current promotions on its highly rated HDTVs (and the demo tour that just started) in the press release after the break and bring your calculator, if Dances With Smurfs wasn’t your cup of tea anyway, we might have found the perfect way to finance your new home theater upgrade.

LG BD690 is the first Blu-ray player certified for Wi-Fi Direct, keeps Bluetooth paranoid

The possibilities teased in 2009 by Wi-Fi Direct have probably kept Bluetooth up at night, and we’re sure the commencement of device certification last month hasn’t helped, either. Now the LG BD960 has emerged as the first Blu-ray player on the Wi-Fi Direct certification list, hinting direct P2P communication in our home theaters among WiFi devices (without the need for a routing middleman) could soon go from fiction to fact. Unfortunately, mum’s still the word on shipping and pricing. The mere chance however that the player could stream content to any other WiFi-equipped device — Direct certified or not — is a big enough deal to give our dedicated media streamers Defarge-like glances already. Particularly, if the BD960 comes packed with features similar its suspected predecessor the LG-BD390, which can stream both Netflix, Vudu, and DLNA network content, as well as play DivX HD 1080p content. Until more details surface though, we’ll simply have to keep reminding our poor Galaxy S that it isn’t destined to be alone in this cold, cruel world forever.

Vudu’s 1080p movie streaming to hit Panasonic’s Viera Cast Blu-ray players

We may very well be in the minority here, but we definitely didn’t peg winter 2010 as the second coming of Vudu. In just the past month or so, the resurgent movie rental outfit has managed to slink its way onto Sharp connected HDTVs, D-Link’s Boxee Box, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and now, Panasonic’s crew of Viera Cast-enabled Blu-ray decks. The DMP-BDT350, DMP-BDT300, DMP-BDT100, DMP-BD85, DMP-BD65 and DMP-B500 will all gain access to Vudu’s 4000+ 1080p movie library starting just two days from today (that’s November 24th, for the calendar-challenged), promising instant streaming on titles that start at just $2 per night. If you’re the proud owner of one of those players, keep an eye out for an impending firmware update… otherwise, well, keep an eye out for those keeping an eye out.

Walmart launches Black Friday barrage early, $69 Blu-ray player, $89 DS Lite

Walmart launches Black Friday barrage early, $69 Blu-ray player, $89 DS LiteSick of waiting outside in the cold on the wee hours of Black Friday, only to get trampled on the way in to the store when the doors open? Walmart has a better solution: they’ll open the doors at midnight. Yes, the sales start at the first minute of Black Friday, and the full list is after the break, but to get the really good stuff you’ll have to hang around until 5:00am. That’s when a Magnavox Blu-ray player (presumably the oft-discounted NB500) will go for $69, with $10 in VUDU credits thrown in for good measure. Or, you can get yourself a Nintendo DS Lite for $89, which is a very solid deal. Sure, it doesn’t do 3D, but who says games need depth?

Audiovox Has a Blu-Ray Player for Your Car

Audiovox AVDBR1While I doubt the new Audiovox AVDBR1 is going to make it into in-dash units anytime soon, if you’ve been looking for a way to take your Blu-Ray movies on vacation with you and keep the passengers on the back of the car quiet for the duration of the trip, Audiovox has the solution. The new AVDBR1 plays both Blu-Ray and standard DVDs, and will retail for $349.99, making it a pricey addition to or replacement for the entertainment system in your family van.

The new player uses a standard 12-volt connector and can be safely mounted anywhere in the vehicle and doesn’t require special mounting or extra space to function. Expect to see Escalades outfitted with this new toy first, and minivans full of kids headed to soccer practice second, as soon as it’s released in April 2011.

Titanium Blue PS3 hits Japan on November 25th, long-awaited racing game in tow

November 3rd came and went without a Gran Turismo 5 game to play, so as you’d imagine this gorgeous Titanium Blue PS3 launch bundle also failed to see the light of day. However, now that we’ve got a totally plausible and twice-confirmed November 24th release date for the little uber-realistic racer that could, it’s probably fair to take Sony Japan at its word that we’ll see the commemorating console appear without further delay. Tell your Japanese importer to line up on November 25th if you want one with your name on it, and be sure to hand him at least ¥35,980 (about $436) of your rainy day fund.

Microsoft’s adorable new Windows 7 ad touts Blu-ray, shows Macs and PCs really just want to be friends

With the holiday buying season descending upon us, fancy new commercials are naturally ramping up in tandem. Microsoft has a new spin on its Windows 7 promotional efforts with its latest ad, which shows a Mac and a PC bonding over a Blu-ray copy of Avatar during a long flight. Naturally, the PC is the only one who can play Blu-ray, which is Microsoft’s semi-subtle pitch, but really this commercial is about the power of Friendship and Sharing Things With Others. We were halfway about to ruin it all by smarmily suggesting the fact that the Mac can play a very similar HD copy of Avatar pulled down from iTunes that won’t put as much of a hurt on his battery, but for whatever reason there’s no Avatar on the US iTunes Store right now (possibly James Cameron’s upcoming extended special collector’s millennium edition release has something to do with it?). Which brings us around to Apple’s real reason for not supporting Blu-ray: they can’t take it away from you.

Sony Optiarc debuts 12x Blu-ray writers, makes ’em friendly with BD 3D

Not that we haven’t seen a 12x Blu-ray burner before, but it’ll be a cold day in the underworld before you hear us griping about a little friendly competition. Sony Optiarc has taken the cellophane off of its newest crop of half-height writers, the BD-5300S, BWU-500S and BWU-500S. These guys will soon be shipping in a variety of retail and OEM configurations, offering up Blu-ray 3D playback, 12x toasting of BD-R media (dual-layer steps down to 8x) and a copy of CyberLink’s Media Suite 8 with the latter unit. The outift’s not talking dollars and cents, but you can judge the value for yourself when they start filtering out in the next few weeks.
