iPod touch still maxes out at 64GB / $399, available in white October 12th

While the iPhone 4S takes the headlines with its dual antennas and upgraded processor, we also have a new white iPod touch joining the family. Pricing for the “#1 portable game player” (Apple’s words, with some numbers to back them up) still starts at $199 for the 8GB version, going up $399 for a 64GB. All will be available in black or white October 12th. There’s no hardware changes to speak of, so hopefully all those sweet iOS 5 upgrades are enough to hold you. iTunes Match hits US ‘end of October’ for $24.99

We already had the details on iTunes Match, but now we’ve got a ballpark release date. According to Apple, the iTunes service will make its debut by the end of the month in the great U S of A, and it can be yours for $24.99 a year. Here’s hoping Apple’s got a nice, clean (DRM-free 256kbps AAC file) version of Monster Mash floating in the cloud for your Halloween listening pleasure.

iOS 5 will be available October 12, iCloud launching the same day

Mark your calendars, kids. Scott Forstall’s on stage here at “Let’s Talk iPhone” and just gave a hard date for iOS 5’s arrival: expect it to hit next week, on October 12th, with Apple’s iCloud service launching that same day. Though developers have been playing with it for four months now, this will be the first time the general, non-tinkering public gets to taste its 200-plus new features — a list that includes Newsstand, Reminders, iMessage, WiFi sync, Find My Friends, split keyboards, AirPlay mirroring for the iPad 2 (and iPhone 4S!) and the Notification Center. (And, you know, greeting cards, if you’re into that sort of thing.) iOS 5 will be free for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, while iCloud’s standard 5GB of email / storage will come gratis to folks already using iOS 5 and Lion. Take note that if it’s iTunes Match you’re after (and you live in the states), you’ll have to sit tight a few more weeks yet.

Apple: Six million copies of OS X Lion downloaded since launch

Before we get to the real meat of things, Tim Cook’s just trotted out some Lion numbers — six million copies downloaded since launch, to be exact. According to the big Apple’s new CEO, that’s a growth of 80 percent over Snow Leopard. Of course, those numbers would mean nothing without a little comparison. Cook says it took Windows 7 20 weeks to meet 10 percent of Windows’ install base, compared to the two weeks it took Lion to reach the same portion of OS X users.

HP pays $10.4 billion for controlling interest in Autonomy, which will remain autonomous

VoodooPC. 3Com. And, perhaps most notoriously, Palm. The list of HP acquisitions grows by one today, with the purchase of UK information-software maker Autonomy, long a target of former HP chief Léo Apotheker. Apotheker, you may recall, was just ousted in favor of former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. The deal began during Apotheker’s tenure and went through with HP paying just about $10.4 billion for a controlling percentage of Autonomy stock. The UK firm will remain a separate unit, with Whitman saying, “Autonomy significantly increases our capabilities to manage and extract meaning from that data to drive insight, foresight and better decision making.” Something tells us she’s not the only one hoping for some better decision making. Rhapsody announces plans to acquire Napster

Details are fairly light at the moment, but Rhapsody has just announced that it plans to acquire Napster, and that the deal is expected to be complete as soon as the end of November. In a statement, Rhapsody president Jon Irwin said that the deal “will further extend Rhapsody’s lead over our competitors in the growing on-demand music market,” and that “this is a ‘go big or go home’ business, so our focus is on sustainably growing the company.” According to Rhapsody, the company will acquire Napster’s subscribers and “certain other assets” under the agreement, and Best Buy (Napster’s current owner) will receive a minority stake in the company. Ice Cream Sandwich gets a two-minute tour, courtesy of a lucky eBay shopper (video)

The one Android update to rule them all — better known as Ice Cream Sandwich — is penciled in for an official launch sometime in the next two months, so it’s only natural for some shots to leak out. We just weren’t expecting a two-minute video showing off a few of the new features. As the story goes, a lucky gent ordered a Samsung Nexus S on eBay and, upon its arrival, noticed that his new prized possession looked a little… different. Hopping over to the About screen, he was shocked to discover that the device was running ICS. The firmware appears to be operating on the same baseband as the screenshots leaked a few weeks ago, but it’s running on an updated build (IRK48) and kernel (3.0.1).

We can see plenty of influence from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb here, as well as four shortcuts on the bottom (a definite bump from the two found on vanilla 2.3). There’s a new Google Apps icon which opens up a tray containing a number of featured services put out by the search giant, and long-pressing the home button brings up a vertical Honeycomb-style multitasking menu. The notification bar, camera UI and other menus also have a much different look. Granted, all of this could just be a custom ROM built to emulate the latest Google dessert, so we can’t be a full hundred percent certain that it’s authentic. If it’s not, at least we can give credit for it being incredibly elaborate. Enjoy the video and additional screenshot below.

Ready for another new Kindle moniker to remember? Here it comes! “Kindle Keyboard.” That’s the name that was bestowed upon the tried-and-true 6-incher today after Bezos unwrapped a touchscreen model and a low-cost variant that tout no physical QWERTY keys whatsoever. Now, the WiFi-only Kindle is going for as low as $99 with ads (down from $114), while the non-ads edition can be had for $139. Meanwhile, the 3G + WiFi Special Offers edition has fallen from $164 to $139, and the ad-free brother is going for $189. Naturally, all four of ’em are in stock and shipping today if the new blood just didn’t do much for ya.

Amazon Silk browser spins a faster mobile web, courtesy of cloud servers (video)

Part of Amazon’s new Kindle Fire pitch is its promise of Amazon Silk — a “split browser” exclusive to the tablet that gets the heavy lifting done on its EC2 cloud servers and promises faster access as a result. Dubbed Silk to represent an “invisible, yet incredibly strong connection”, it takes advantage of Amazon’s existing speedy connections, and that so many sites are already hosted on its servers to speed up web access. Another feature is its ability to learn from previous web surfers and use their data to determine how to render a page, and which sites to precache on the device before you even select the next link. While mobile browsers like Skyfire and Opera have offered speed boosting proxies before, Amazon thinks its AWS prowess and the addition of “dynamic decisions” about what to render locally or in the cloud takes it to another level. Amazon launches Kindle Touch and Touch 3G: starts at $99, ships November 21st

Oddly enough, the Kindle Fire already feels like yesterday’s news. Why? Because Amazon won’t stop launching new products. Jeff Bezos just revealed the Kindle Touch ($99 with ads, $139 without) here in New York City, noting that this guy’s using an IR touch system, similar to the latest Nook and Kobo, and there’s no keyboard (physical, anyway) to speak of. It’s slimmer, smaller and lighter than the existing Kindle, with a muted silver chassis that looks almost nothing like the Kindles of today. The entire user interface has been re-thought out, with “taps” being used in place of buttons. Need another reason to buy? We’re told that it’s using the company’s “most advanced” E Ink display yet, and while no specifics were doled out, “extra long” was the term used to describe battery life. A 3G-enabled model ($149 with free global roaming!) will also be available, with the duo up for pre-order later today and shipments going out on November 21st. Unfortunately, the Touch — like the Fire — is a US-only product.
