Nokia ships one millionth 5800 XpressMusic, does a little dance

Okay, so we’re going on the assumption that the 500,000 figure uttered by Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo during this week’s Q4 earnings call was a touch old — you know, considering that the outfit is now trumpeting the shipment of a cool million. Following a (very!) successful UK launch, Nokia has just shipped its one millionth Tube, which is the handset maker’s first mass market touchscreen device. And to think — it hasn’t even debuted in many corners of the globe yet.

Microsoft reports $100M decline in Zune revenue

Microsoft’s newly-announced layoffs and declining profits aren’t the only bad news in Redmond — according to the company’s quarterly statements, Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million, or 54 percent compared to the same quarter last year, due to falling device sales. Mega-ouch. Not all is doom and gloom for the Entertainment and Devices Division, which continues to be profitable with a $151 million haul: Xbox 360 and PC platform revenue increased six percent ($135 million) to $2.2 billion. Meanwhile, Apple saw a three percent increase in iPod sales over the same period, so we’re anxious to see what Microsoft has planned for reviving the social.

[Thanks, Jason Wong]

Nokia ships half a million 5800 XpressMusic handsets in 30 days

If this were coming from any other mouth, we’d definitely second guess it. As it stands, though, it’s hard to dispute the words of Nokia’s CEO when it comes to matters involving Nokia. Mr. Olli Pekka Kallasvuo stated rather proudly during the firm’s Q4 results call that it had shipped just over 500,000 5800 XpressMusic mobiles (better known as the Tube) in just 30 days. That figure becomes even more impressive when you realize that shipments only occurred in select markets, though it should be noted that “units shipped” and “units sold to end users” could indeed be very different things. Still, half a million in just a month ain’t too shabby in today’s economy, so here’s the kudos you’re clearly due, Nokia.

Tesla admits to underpricing Roadsters, still hopes profitability is near

Here’s a tip: you should probably research the bill of materials before pricing the item you’re building to sell. In an effort to calm down potentially irate early buyers, Tesla Motors Elon Musk has issued an email confessing that it had no idea actual production costs for the $92,000 Roadster would run closer to $140,000. The automaker is hoping the changes in “manufacturing approaches, the car’s drive train, heating and air conditioning system, wiring and even the supplier of body panels” will lower production costs to somewhere between $90,000 and $100,000 soon, which certainly gives a little insight into the $128,500 starting price of the recently unveiled Roadster Sport. In order to recoup some of the losses, Tesla is asking pre-orderers to pony up an extra six large for a high-speed charging cable and custom wheels — both of which consumers were expecting to be included in their original purchase price. At any rate, the firm is aiming to get build costs down to $80,000 by summer, with profitability following close behind. And you thought the automotive problems began and ended in Detroit.

LG overtakes Motorola for third place in global handset shipments

Half a year ago, Motorola was still clinging tight to the number three spot in terms of worldwide handset shipments, but boy — what a difference six months makes. According to numbers compiled by DigiTimes, LG Electronics managed to ship just over 100 million mobile phones in 2008, while Moto checked in with “just” 99.9 million shipped. That makes LG the third largest handset maker in terms of shipments, barely beating out Moto and Sony Ericsson who placed fourth and fifth, respectively. As expected, Nokia and Samsung are still holding down the top two spots, but it’s the continued slippage of Motorola that’s most significant here. You know what they say about being on rock bottom, right? We bet Motorola’s wondering if that mantra applies here.

HP’s TouchSmart all-in-one PC slips on its business socks

Can you imagine if Dunder Mifflin landed a contract with HP, and every single PC in The Office was replaced with a TouchSmart all-in-one? Yeah, hilarity would undoubtedly ensue. Nevertheless, the company has decided to push its dx9000 into the corporate arena. The business-class device is pre-loaded with Windows Vista Business 64, an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 22-inch panel and a Virtual LAN driver. Outside of that, we can’t really see any major differences between the suited version and the consumer edition, but it’s all about marketing, anyway. Whip out the Pro Card next month, as each of these will set you back at least $1,399.

Logitech axes 15% of salaried workforce as it restructures

Logitech may be bringing the heat at CES, but that doesn’t mean it’s not feeling the pinch. Alongside a few new pieces of kit, the outfit has also announced that it will be undergoing a serious restructuring as it moves forward. According to president and chief executive officer Gerald P. Quindlen: “During the December quarter, the retail environment deteriorated significantly, and moreover, we expect the economic environment to worsen in the coming months and we are therefore taking significant actions to align our cost structure with what is likely to be an extended downturn.” Sadly, those “actions” involve sending home some 15% of its salaried workforce worldwide, and it’s expecting the savings from all of this to show in Q1 of fiscal year 2010. Ouch.

Fujitsu puts the kibosh on possible sale to Western Digital

It seemed nearly imminent that Fujitsu would be selling off its hard disk division to rival Western Digital, but apparently something has gone awry. According to Fujitsu President Kuniaki Nozoe, there is currently “zero chance” of a deal being done, though he did confess that the two had sat down and contemplated changing their statuses to “it’s complicated.” Unfortunately, that’s about all we have to go on for the moment, especially when you consider that WD’s take on the whole ordeal is a concise “no comment.” Who knows, maybe this is just cold feet or something, or maybe Fujitsu simply realized that it was better off saving itself for the one.
