Research shocker! Keyless car entry systems can be hacked easily, elegantly

We know you are vigilant enough not to trust your car’s security to a wireless system, but plenty of other folks like the convenience of putting away the metallic keys and getting into their vehicles with a bit of Bond-like swagger. Professor Srdjan Capkun of ETH Zurich found himself perched on the fence between these two groups when he recently purchased a vehicle with a keyless entry system, so he did what any good researcher would: he tried to bypass its security measures. In total, he and his team tested 10 models from eight car makers and their results were pretty conclusive: each of the tested vehicles was broken into and driven away using a very simple and elegant method. Keyless entry systems typically work by sending a low-powered signal from the car to your key fob, with the two working only when they’re near each other, but the wily Zurich profs were able to intercept and extend that signal via antennas acting as repeaters, resulting in your key activating your car even when it’s nowhere near it. The signal-repeating antennae have to be pretty close to both the key and the car, but that’s why heist movies stress the importance of teamwork. Hit the source link for all the chilling details.

Will rental car companies ding you for returning half-charged electric vehicles? Enterprise won’t.

Here’s a shocker in more ways than one. Earlier this month, Enterprise Rent-A-Car announced that it would soon be offering Chevrolet’s Volt at the company’s Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario, California, and we reasonably assumed that renters best watch out for any unforeseen charges that may arise from returning it with a dead (or near-dead) stash of batteries. For anyone who has rented a gasoline-powered automobile in the past score, you’ll know that returning a whip with a fuel tank that’s just 90 percent full won’t quite cut it, and you’ll be stuck ponying up for your oversight. Thankfully — at least at Enterprise — a similar surcharge setup will not be applied to electric vehicles. Lisa Martini, a spokesperson for Enterprise, got in touch with us to clarify the outfit’s plans, and they’re shockingly consumer-friendly:

“[Enterprise] does not plan to charge customers for bringing back EVs without a full charge. Enterprise is installing charging stations at locations that will offer EVs, and plans to charge the vehicles once they’re returned.”

That pretty much sums it up for at least one major rental company, and we can only hope that everyone else publishes similar intentions before their accountants publish something to the contrary. Power to the people, eh?

Toyota working on magnesium batteries for PHEVs of the not so near future

Toyota wants to take your range anxiety out for a walk behind the woodshed and obliterate it from the known world. The means for doing this, the Japanese giant has revealed, might very well be contained in its new magnesium-sulfur batteries, which promise to double the energy density of the current industry-best lithium ion cells. Of course, the catch here is that the new magnesium goodness is nowhere near ready and is projected to come in 2020 at the earliest, but we’re gladdened to see a long-term view being taken by car manufacturers with regard to powering vehicles electrically. Alternative methodologies currently under review in Toyota’s labs also include aluminum and calcium materials, showing that there is indeed no lack of ambition for making plug-ins respectable road warriors.

Sunswift IV, world’s fastest solar-powered racer, leaves GM Sunraycer in its dust

The Sunswift IV (aka IVy) might look like a mobile dinner table, but it’s actually the world’s fastest solar-powered vehicle. The table-top on wheels got the official nod from the Guinness Book of World Records last week, for hitting a top speed of 88km/h (about 55 mph) — nearly 10 km/h faster than the previous record-holder, the GM Sunraycer, which bears a striking resemblance to a disembodied Android monster. IVy, designed by Sunswift, a student-run non-profit at the University of New South Wales, reached its top speed using 1050 watts, about 400 watts less than the Sunraycer, and performed its record-smashing run without the 25kg battery it’s usually packing. Faster runs have been clocked, including by IVy, but Guinness has not been on hand for confirmation.

Calling and Driving Could Make You Safer- Report

Here’s a report sure to raise the ire of safety advocates, everywhere. According to a new study, an increase in the number of people driving while talking on the phone may have actually made us all safer.

The study, conducted by Saurabh Bhargava of the University of Chicago and Vikram Pathania from London’s School of Economics studied 440,000 made by California drivers over 11 days. They found no significant increase in crashes from those drivers using their cells. The study comes as the number of traffic accidents declines, in spite of an increase in those talking while driving.

So, how could “distracted driving” actually make you safer? Bhargava and Pathania have a few theories. First, there’s the fact that drivers are often extra cautious when they pick up the phone behind the while. Also, those who are crappy drivers while talking on their phone may just be crappy drivers in general.

Makes sense, I suppose. It also flies in the face of pretty much everything we’ve ever heard about distracted driving, ever–including a number of laws that have been passed over the past couple of years.

Of course, we can’t really recommend that anyone go out and actually try it–after all, who will keep the Bluetooth headset companies in business? 

Enterprise to offer Chevy Volt in California, probably ding you for bringing it back half-charged

Not one to be one-upped by Hertz — which already announced a plug-in rental program that’ll include the almighty Tesla Roadster and the diminutive Smart Fortwo — Enterprise Rent-A-Car has just announced that it’ll be the first to offer Chevrolet’s Volt later in the month. The company’s Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario, California will have an undisclosed amount in stock for daily and weekly rentals, and it sounds as if it’ll be grappling for more just as soon as they roll off of the production line. For those who can’t quite make it down to the desert, Enterprise will be offering 500 Nissan Leaf vehicles nationwide, with charging stations already installed in Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Monica. No word on what type of fee you’ll be hit with when you bring it back with only 20 percent of the batteries charged, but you can rest assured the bigwigs at Enterprise are already thinking about it.

Mavia Does Everything For Your Car But Drive It

As a New Yorker who doesn’t own a car, I don’t usually go in for car tech, but I’ve got to admit, this thing is pretty cool. It’s the Mavia. It plugs into your car’s diagnostic port, and it will help you out in all manner of ways. Once plugged in, you create an account on the Mavia site and then connect it to your smartphone.
Once that’s all set up, you can use the device to track the car–find it in a crowded parking lot or find out where your kid has taken the vehicle. Mavia can also track your stolen vehicle for the cops, and if you get in an accident, it can text your location and info to family and emergency vehicles.
The device will also let you know what’s wrong with your car, should you have a mechanical problem, via the site (“in plain English,” says Mavia).

Parrot Asteroid car receiver packs Android and apps into your dash

Parrot’s back from its AR.Drone insanity and wrestling with its core competency — although it has a new open source twist. Parrot has put Android onto a car receiver, but it’s a heavily modified version that runs small apps on a 3.2-inch screen, with a jog dial, a back button, and a menu button for control. Parrot’s experiment is dubbed Asteroid, and it has a lot of example apps already, included a GPS-based maps view, but the real goal is to get an SDK out there and allow developers to build apps for the platform. Luckily, while the unit is short on controls, it’s not short on inputs, including USB ports for iPhone docking, USB storage, a 3G modem, and a GPS dongle, along with an SD card slot and a mic (for talking to a paired Bluetooth phone). For the music bit you can actually search through both your iPhone and your USB / SD libraries using your voice. Right now there’s no word on price, but Parrot plans to launch in major European markets in Q1, with a US version following in Q2.

AT&T to get future BMWs online, marque in danger of becoming Ultimate Downloading Machine

You’d have a hard time finding a car without power windows these days and, the way things are going, it won’t be long before you’ll have to look similarly hard for a disconnected car. The latest to push the trend is BMW, signing on with AT&T to enable the next-generation of Bimmers to have an always-on connection to pull down traffic information, weather conditions, and probably some less useful stuff too. No word on which cars this will first make an appearance in nor whether it’ll allow for Leaf-like remote car maintenance nor, indeed, how much it will cost. For those answers and more you’ll just have to wait for the future — or look for a secret clue hidden in the PR below.

Cambridge professor creates creepy, emotion-sensing GPS system

Meet Charles: the robotic GPS system that can tell when you’ve got road rage. Yes, he’s a tad scary looking, but according to the Cambridge professor who created him, you won’t feel like throwing him out the window when you’re frustrated. The disembodied satnav robot (head and torso only), which sits in the passengers seat, is designed to respond to a driver’s emotional cues, like facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Charles takes this information and responds accordingly, providing sympathetic phrases when he senses frustration. Researchers say the robot is about 70 percent accurate at detecting emotion, or about as accurate as any human. We say a backseat driver that can’t hit back is 100 percent awesome.
