Acer’s Liquid Mini gets Ferrari-fied, doesn’t get any faster

Acer’s Liquid Mini won’t be breaking speed records anytime soon, but at least it can look like a red hot racer, now that it’s received the Ferrari treatment. Following in the Liquid E‘s skid marks, this Liquid Mini Ferrari Edition features a vibrant red exterior emblazoned with the automaker’s iconic shield, and ships preloaded with engine ringtones, racing-themed wallpaper and other apps. Under the hood, however, lies the same, Gingerbread-based handset, replete with 512MB of RAM, a 3.2-inch display, five megapixel camera and rather underwhelming 600MHz processor. No word yet on when the device will be hitting the raceway, but you can get a closer look at the source link, below.

BMW developing laser headlights, officially over LEDs

We know, our whip doesn’t have LED headlights either, but that’s not stopping BMW from pressing on with its laser powered successor. Purportedly ready “within a few years,” the updated beams boast an intensity a thousand times greater than their forebearers, all while consuming less than half the power — helping EV drivers eke out a little more range. With each laser diode one hundred times smaller than its LED counterpart, Bavaria reckons the tech will help it design and package future light fixtures that are more bodacious than those from its competition in Ingolstadt. There’s no firm date for availability, but the company says the new lighting tech will debut on the production version of its i8 concept. Sounds great, so where do we sign up for our frickin’ laser bimmer?

Audi announces A2 electric concept car, uses lasers to ensure safety of future humans

Lasers make everything better, including (but not limited to): microphones, kidneys and Audi’s electric A2 concept. This newest flight of fancy uses a laser diode as the rear fog lamp, which projects a red triangle onto the road to let other drivers know you’re there. The German car-maker has tricked out the rest of the EV’s lighting system as well by implementing matrix beam technology using LEDs and microreflectors — giving it high resolution, non-glaring beams and intelligent tail lights that change in intensity based on weather conditions. Claiming other state-of-the-art features like gesture controls instead of keys, and brake lights that glow brighter the harder you press, it sounds like this would be a pretty sweet ride — if it ever makes it to market. No word on the other, insignificant details (ya know, like what actually powers the thing) but there’s plenty more about the car’s lighting system in the PR after the break.

World’s only turbine-powered Batmobile up for sale on eBay, recession hits Bruce Wayne, too

Remember that Boeing-powered Batmobile we ran across last month? Well friends, it could be yours via eBay auction in about a week. Currently, the highest bid is you can buy it now for $620,000 — which would be enough to cover the cost of several cars not fit for the Caped Crusader. However, none of those come equipped with a helicopter turbine, now do they? Putsch Racing reminds interested parties that the mean machine is street registered in the US, so you can roll like the Dark Knight without fear of the police pursuing you. An iPad loaded with digital avionics helps you monitor the jet engine, and you can use your choice of three fuel sources to power the thing: Jet A, kerosene, or diesel. Hey now, we never said it was environmentally friendly. If you, like Jay-Z, are “planking on a million,” check out the detailed auction shots below and bid on Batman’s ride yourself.

LG and GM team up to build next generation of electric cars

Abbreviation loving multinationals Lucky Goldstar and General Motors have entered into an “Electric Vehicle Cooperation” agreement to build the next generation of EVs. The partnership follows a successful dating phase where LG supplied the batteries for the Chevy Volt. Now, teams from both companies will collaborate on key components, vehicle structures and architectures — which we take to mean that it’s a more substantial proposition than just battery sharing. The plan is to meet the new US fuel economy targets by 2025, so the design phase for the new autos will kick off soon. Let’s hope this new venture bears some fruit that’s faster than a flying banana.

Third generation Smart Fortwo ditches Tesla powertrain, gains two wheeled cousin

Time and tide wait for no man, folks. Nearly nine months after delivering the first electric Fortwos to snuggie-toting yanks, Daimler’s gone and announced its faster and longer-lasting successor. It’s not an entirely new car mind you, rather an extensive under the hood nip and tuck that replaces the Tesla powertrain with a more potent unit sourced from EM-motive. Up 34 horses from the previous model, the 74 horsepower EV now scoots from 0-60 in a “lively” 13 seconds — a vast improvement over the 23.4 second (!) time of its predecessor. It’s got a larger 17.6kWh battery pack too, which increases range a smidge to 87 miles. And this isn’t another EV trial: it’ll be produced in volume and sold (not leased) in 30 countries at an undisclosed price.

Joining the revised city dweller is the matching Smart Ebike. The electrically assisted bicycle gives meat bags a choice of four levels of laziness as it propels them 60 miles between charges. At €2,900 (or around $4,000) it’s no bargain, but you didn’t think transportational color coordination came cheap, did you? Audi’s Urban Concept heads to IAA Frankfurt, tickles our EV sensibilities

The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) Frankfurt looms on the horizon, meaning its time for another round of bodacious concept cars we want, but sadly can never have. We’ve already seen BMW’s entry and now it’s Audi’s turn to show off an electric city-dweller. Dubbed the “Urban Concept,” this latest e-tron is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and wields a door contraption that’ll put Lambos to shame — assuming it ever makes it to market. And it just might, seeing as our friends over at Autoblog caught it slumming around Berlin in prototype garb. We’ll hear more from Ingolstadt come September, but in the meantime more sketches and snaps of the development mule await you at the source links below.

Pandora connects to Sony’s in-dash receivers, adds iOS, Android and BlackBerry support

Just two short years after announcing its plans for in-car music streaming, Pandora has finally begun to trickle its way into in-dash receivers. The digital music service can now be accessed through four of Sony’s latest connected car stereos — the DSX-S210X, DSX-S310BTX, and the SiriusXM-compatible CDX-GT660UP and CDX-GT565UP. The DSX units connect to Pandora’s smartphone app via “an integrated Tune Tray,” while the CDX models employ a no-frills USB solution, making your suite of personalized music stations an on-road reality. Although all of the receivers offer integration with the iPhone, only the Bluetooth-enabled DSX-S310BTX links Android and BlackBerry users to Pandora’s streaming cloud. Of course, if you’re looking for an additional means of accessing music on-the-go, you can always opt for FM radio. Full PR after the break.

Ford teams with SunPower, offers EV owners $10,000 solar charging system

We might not know how much Ford’s expecting for the Focus Electric, but it’s already put a hefty $10,000 price tag on one of its accessories. The company announced today that it has teamed with SunPower to offer purchasers of the upcoming Focus Electric and C-MAX Energi a 2.5-kilowatt rooftop solar system. That setup will apparently provide “enough renewable energy production to offset the energy used for charging” cars that log 1,000 miles per month (about 30 miles per day) or less. If $10,000 is just a little too rich for your blood, there’s always Best Buy’s $1,500 budget-friendly charging station. Full PR after the break.
