T-Mobile starts up 4G ad campaign by poking a stiletto into AT&T’s network (video)

We suspected T-Mobile’s new advertising campaign would ruffle some feathers, but we weren’t ready for quite such brazen trash-talking right off the bat. Of course, it’s trash talk dressed up in a pretty white and Magenta dress and delivered in the most angelic of voices, but T-Mobile makes its point to AT&T subscribers loud and clear: we got 4G, you don’t. Whether you consider the network’s current 21Mbps theoretical max a true representation of 4G or not, we’ll leave up to you; just make sure to join us past the break for the Apple-scented commercial, which also teases the myTouch 4G, a HSPA+ handset that T-Mobile happens to be launching today.

Update: AT&T isn’t taking this one lying down. It countered with the following statement this afternoon: “T-Mobile’s claims about 4G are based on the same HSPA+ technology we have deployed to 180 million people today, more than T-Mobile’s reported 140 million, and we’ll have it rolled out to 250 million people by the end of this month, substantially more than the 200 million T-Mobile says it will have by year-end.”

Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0 showcased in new commercial

It’s hard to tell if the ad embedded after the break is purely official, but it definitely reeks of HP. In a good way, that is. Uploaded by the same fellow that gave us our first sneak peek at webOS 2.0, this “Sizzle” ad shows 34 solid seconds of Palm Pre 2 action, complete with a glimpse at Angry Birds, Facebook and all sorts of new 2.0 features. We’re aren’t totally digging the tunes, but otherwise, it looks to be rather attractive — way better than the first wave of original Pre ads, that’s for sure.

Update: Hey, hey — looks like the ad’s now embedded on Palm’s website. Kudos!

Official Kinect TV ads feature smiling actors, very large rooms, little else (video)

If you’re a fan of videos featuring commercial actors mugging for the camera and jumping around in a semi-comical manner, you are seriously in luck. That’s right, it looks like Ballmer and Co.’s $500 million marketing blitz has resulted in some totally spasmodic TV spots for the Kinect. As befits a technology that emphasizes movement over the controller itself, there is very little actual hardware shown — but boy, do those kids look like they’re having fun! See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, David]

Droid 2 Global ads now running on Verizon’s 800 number

Whoever said being on hold was a bad thing? Verizon customers who call in and get stuck in limbo right now are being treated to a minor device scoop: an ad for the mythical Droid 2 Global, which has leaked out here and there but hasn’t yet been officially announced. The ad doesn’t reveal much apart from the existence of the CDMA / GSM slider and the fact that it’ll work in 221 countries, but that’s all we needed to hear — listen for yourself after the break.

Update: Ha, as commenter Spider-Man points out below, that 221 number is mighty suspect, as there are only between 191-195 countries in the world today, depending on how you count them. Sounds like Verizon needs to take this one back to the studio. Thanks, Spidey!

The Worst Tech Ads of All-Time

logitech_revue_ad_creepy.jpg

Earlier this week, we posted about the super-weird, super-creepy new ad for the Logitech Revue Google TV unit, in which a flat screen TV with a giant eyeball and stubby legs dances angrily for the attention of consumers. It’s even more terrifying than it sounds.

The spot is part of a long tradition of creepy, strange, inappropriate, and just generally bad tech commercials. Some are attempts at humor, some are just sort of misguided, and all are worth remembering, if only to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

I polled PCMag staffers to find out which tech ads made their list. And yeah, there are some truly, truly awful spots on here. The list is most likely far from complete however. If you’ve got any to add (and I know you do), let us know in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy Tab feature tour reminds of just how pocketable it isn’t (video)

Sony tried to convince us that its VAIO P was a pocketable computer, so we quite naturally pointed, laughed and mocked. It seems only fair, therefore, to give Samsung the same treatment when it tries to sell us on the idea that we’d be perfectly comfortable stashing its Galaxy Tab slate in the back pocket of our denims. Listen, the only way we’re ever going to put hundreds of dollars’ worth of money into our rear pocket is in note form, protected by our Jules Winnfield-endorsed faux leather wallet. But then again, if you actually like your gadgets to protrude a little bit, maybe this is just the Tab for you. Follow the break for the full video tour.

Windows Phone 7 slides into TV spot, Rachel Zoe’s life

If you knew anything about The Rachel Zoe Project, you’d know that dear Rachel never, ever leaves home without her BlackBerry. Apparently, her comforting hubby — known affectionately as Rodger Berman — isn’t going far without his unbranded Windows Phone 7 device (and a little help from Bing, naturally). Curiously enough, the date on the screen shows July, so there’s a halfway decent chance the software they’re playing with is of the pre-production variety… particularly since he’s wielding a Samsung Omnia i9810-based prototype. Oh, and as you can see above, we’re guessing he’s relying on WiFi or some off-camera magic to actually pull anything up. Hard to get 3G in Los Angeles, especially when your phone is missing its SIM card. At any rate, the spot in full is embedded just past the break, and just between us, we get the feeling this is just the first of many more to come.

[Thanks, Michael]

The PlayStation MoveMen are watching you

Sony may still be relying on Kevin Butler and Marcus Rivers to sell its gear over here, but it looks like the company’s entered an entirely different realm in Norway. It’s just rolled out a new ad campaign for the Norwegian launch of the PlayStation Move that features the “MoveMen,” a dynamic, all-seeing duo that watches for a lack of partying and delivers the Move to those in need. The question is: who moves the MoveMen? Head on past the break to see the see the ad yourself, and hit up the Flickr link below for some behind-the-scenes shots.

Sony takes aim at iPhone gaming in new PSP ad

Well, it looks like Nintendo isn’t the only gaming company that thinks Apple is the “enemy of the future” — Sony has now also taken aim at iPhone gaming in a new PSP ad featuring Kevin Butler‘s pint-sized counterpart, Marcus Rivers. In it, Marcus reminds viewers that the iPhone is built for things like “texting your grandma and calling your girl,” while the PSP is “built for big boy games,” some of which can be had for as little as $9.99. See the whole thing for yourself after the break.

Motorola Droid X gets cinematic ‘See You Tomorrow’ trailer (video)

Yeah, we said trailer. The Droid family has seen its fair share of atypical ads, and while this one won’t tug on your heartstrings, it’ll definitely captivate. Unless you’re already three sheets to the wind and well on your way into an early weekend. Either way, you should really have a look after the break.
