Tag Heuer concept watch beats 3.6 million times per hour, $89,000 price tag gives heart palpitations

Tag Heuer’s high-end concept chronograph is so precise, blink and you’ll miss it — literally. The Mikrotimer Flying 1000’s watch movement runs at 500Hz. Compare that to other high-end chronos plodding along at 5Hz, and you start to see the sort of power and precision Team Tag are working with — this mesmerizing piece of wrist jewelry is capable of banging out 3.6 million beats per hour. Initially planned as a one-off, the concept watch will now go on sale for a lucky few timepiece obsessives. Be prepared to reach for your severely over-burdened money clip, though; the price is set at €65,000 ($88,580), with a limited run of ten arriving before the end of the year. Gawp in awe at the brief video after the break. You may have to sell the Batmobile.

SWYP concept printer combines good looks with touchscreen editing

A concept printer from Seattle-based designers Artefact wants to bring those touchscreen editing skills learnt from smartphones and tablets to the not-so-electrifying world of printers. The streamlined SWYP (See What You Print) has a pretty striking design — for a printer. The paper tray even folds away flush on top of the touchscreen in a very (very!) familar way. That contraption shown above would be able to connect directly to your camera or phone, foregoing the PC step with editing and collating all done on-screen; there’s even an augmented reality interface that visualizes ink levels and those inevitable printer woes. At present, these guys aren’t gunning to take out the only thing HP hasn’t flubbed lately, but hopefully the glossy concept vid after the break will tide you over till commercialization (prayerfully) hits.

[Thanks, Gene]

Microsoft patents modular Windows Phone with swappable batteries, keyboard, and gamepad

We’ve seen slider phones with speakers, gamepads, and of course, the standard keypad — but what if you want to swap out your slider accessory for something new? A new patent from Microsoft is exploring the possibility, showing off a concept smartphone with a sliding modular bay. Tired of that keyboard? Replace it with a gamepad, or a life-giving battery pack. According to the patent claims, some of the modular components would even function wirelessly, citing a touchscreen module which doubles as a wireless handset or a media remote. Neat? You bet, but we wouldn’t get our hopes up — Microsoft typically keeps out of the handset manufacturing game, and the last modular phone to pique our interest didn’t exactly make a splash.

Edison2’s Very Light Car is now very electric, too

When we caught a glimpse of Edison2’s Very Light Car earlier this year, we were told to expect an electric version of the X-Prize winning featherweight in the near future. Well, here it is. Known as the eVLC, this “supremely aerodynamic” concept car is powered by a 10-kWh battery pack and, believe it or not, can comfortably seat four passengers. The plug-in has yet to go through the EPA’s official round of mileage testing, but Edison2 claims that the eVLC is far more fuel efficient than the Nissan Leaf and believes it could even receive the highest MPGe rating ever awarded. There’s still no word on when this little critter could hit the market, but you can check out Autoblog Green‘s gallery (at the source link below) for a more extensive tour of what Edison2 calls the “inevitable future of the automobile.”

Mercedes-Benz F 125! looks like the future, runs on hydrogen

As expected, the feature concept car being shown by Mercedes-Benz at Frankfurt this year was the F 125! But Merc isn’t actually calling it a concept, rather a “research vehicle” that will help the company work toward a gasoline-free future. In this case it’s a hydrogen-filled future, with this car running on compressed gas and so giving off only water vapor and oxygen as emissions. But, it’s also a plug-in, meaning you can charge this thing up on your garage in addition to topping off the tank at your local H2 filling station — at some point in the future when you actually have an H2 filling station. Read on for more details.

Toshiba’s Portege Z830 climbs out of Dell’s Inspiron 600m at IDF 2011 (video)

Apple’s original MacBook Air may have fit inside a traditional office envelope, but it seems that Intel’s got a few tricks up its sleeve, too. Here at IDF 2011, Mooly Eden — vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group — ripped a Toshiba Portege Z830 Ultrabook out of a Dell Inspiron 600m. For those unaware, we first touched the former last week, while the M600 saw its big reveal in the early days of 2005. Seems we’ve come quite a ways in six short years, huh?

Electrolux kitchen laptop concept disregards grease, common sense

Electrolux Mobile Kitchen Concept

Nothing about this Electrolux concept screams practicality. It’s basically an induction powered hotplate attached to a laptop, with a removable cutting board sandwiched between the screen and burner. Designer Dragan Trenchevski envisions this portable cook top as a boon to travelers and campers who can pull up recipes while whipping up meals miles from home, thanks to its 3G connection and battery pack. Of course, grease splatters, CPUs overheat, and an induction cook top will chew threw a battery in no time. But, like we said, the Mobile Kitchen Concept is all about flash — not feasibility. We’ve got one more pic after the break, but you’ll find tons more at the source.

Mercedes-Benz’s hydrogen-powered F125! concept slips out ahead of Frankfurt

Mercedes-Benz is certainly no stranger to hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles, and it looks like the automaker is now about to show off its latest concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. That’s dubbed the F125! (apparently pronounced F one twenty FIVE), and it promises a top speed of 137 miles per hour, 0 to 62 in 4.9 seconds, and 100 kilometers on 0.79 kilograms of hydrogen (or 621 miles on a full tank). Apparently, the concept is also intended to demonstrate the design direction for 2025 CL-Class, although there’s no indication as of yet that Mercedes-Benz plans to put a hydrogen-powered CL-Class into production. Hit the links below for a few more shots that have leaked out ahead of the show.

Ford Evos cloud-connected concept car unveiled at Frankfurt

Ford Evos cloud-connected concept car unveiled at Frankfurt

The 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show doesn’t kick off until tomorrow, but already Ford’s unveiled the tasty hunk of conceptual automotive design it teased us with a few weeks back. It’s called the Evos, it’s loaded with technology and, while it doesn’t look much like any of the current autos you’ll find down at the local Blue Oval dealer, it’s actually said to be the precursor of a new model that’s coming in just four months time. Join us after the break for more details.
