Cameras with projectors? That’s old tricks by now. Samsung wants you to know the new, hip differentiator in the point and shoot market is two LCDs — one in the back like usual, and a 1.5-inch LCD in the front, right next to the lens. According to CNET Asia, that latter display’s good for making sure your self-portraits are just right, or alternatively, it can play “cute animations to capture kids’ attention.” We also think it might also be useful for capturing the exact moment of horror from a coulrophobist. Both 12.2 megapixel cameras sport a 4.6x optical zoom, image stabilization, 720p video capabilities, and a touchscreen rear LCD with haptic feedback. The ST500 has a 3-inch display in the back, while the ST550 (pictured) features a 3.5-inch display that’s also much, much sharper. Nothing said on price, but word from a press release pinpoints a worldwide release date by the end of this month.

As if your Facebook profile doesn’t have enough hard evidence that you’re completely unfit for any job you might strike up the courage to apply for, here’s a thoughtful accessory for producing even more regret-inducing snapshots. Launched tonight alongside Sony‘s DSC-WX1 and DSC-TX1 Cyber-shot digicams, the $150 IPT-DS1 Party-shot (ships in September) is a newfangled camera dock that pans 360 degrees and tilts 24 degrees, automatically detects faces, adjusts composition and takes photos for you. It’s like the GigaPan, sans the whole “useful panorama” aspect. The dock can churn for up to 11 hours on a pair of AA batteries (an optional AC adapter is also available), though at least for now, it only works with the aforesaid TX1 and WX1 models. Also of note, anyone with half an ounce of dignity will likely freak out and leave upon seeing this set up at your next shindig. Just sayin’.

What better way to show off your company’s latest DSLR than by giving it to a couple of professional photographers to work their magic? Nikon’s done just that, handing off its just-announced D300s to noted photojournalist Ami Vitale and sports photographer Robert Bösch. The pair submitted stills and videos from their trial run, and the results are unsurprisingly impressive — there’s only one noticeable instance of rolling shutter, in the beginning of Bösch’s video with the helicopter blades. Of course, there’s no telling how much post-production work went into these pieces, and let’s not forget these are pros in their element — average Joe isn’t gonna be able to pick up this camera and produce the same results. Samsung sure has been milking this whole “teaser” thing for all it’s worth of late, with the newest mystery coming to us in the form of its fresh ‘Tap and Take’ campaign. From now until August 12th, users can give the read link a visit in order to ingest clues about the outfit’s upcoming line of Smart Cameras. These wildly intelligent shooters will purportedly “transform the way consumers take pictures,” and they just might provide each and every American with free health care, solve world hunger and put the mighty Hubble to shame. The whole thing will be revealed in full on August 13th, but for now, why not drop a comment below as to what you think will be so revolutionary about the forthcoming point-and-shoot range?

Sony’s Alpha series DSLR cameras are almost notorious for how often they leak, and as is custom with an introductory assertion like that, we’ve got another one to show you. The company’s Hong Kong support site has an instruction manual available to download for an as-of-then unknown iteration, the α850. The gang at Dyxum forums have gone through it more thoroughly than we have so far, and the Initial reaction is that it’s similar to the α900 but with only three FPS, a smaller viewfinder, and still no video (unlike its competition). We’ve assembled some highlights from the guide, including full specs, in the gallery below. Hit up the read link to grab the full manual for yourself, but just a word of caution, even though the PDF’s only 3.54MB in size, the download has proven to be rather painfully slow.
