Nissan’s new charging technology will juice your EV in ten minutes, ten years from now

Nearly a month after unveiling its revamped quick charger, Nissan has now announced that it’s working on new technology that would make EV charging… well, quicker. A lot quicker. Developed alongside researchers from Japan’s Kansai University, the manufacturer’s approach would allow drivers to fully charge their plug-ins in just ten minutes, without taking any toll on a lithium-ion battery’s storage or voltage. Nissan says it could achieve this by tinkering with a charger’s capacitor — more specifically, by replacing its carbon electrode with one based on a composite of tungsten oxide and vanadium oxide. Industry insiders, however, say this technology may not reach the commercial level for another ten years — substantially longer than ten minutes.

Tesla Model S test ride and factory tour (video)

Tesla Model S test ride and factory tour (video)

Tesla’s been teasing us with the Model S electric car for what seems like a cruelly long time. But, we gadget fans need to remember that designing and releasing a car is a rather different prospect than something like a phone. If your new iDevice crashes you might lose your patience, but if your new car crashes, well, the results could be rather more disastrous.

Tesla is keeping up the teasing act with the Model S Beta launch, an opportunity for a lucky few to come and check out the company’s factory (once the NUMMI facility in Fremont, CA) and to take a quick ride around the company’s test track — and we do mean quick. How do we know? Well, we got to come along. Join us for our impressions after the break.

Kia to roll out re-badged Hyundai electric minicar in late 2011

There’s still no indication that it’ll hit the North American market, but it looks like Kia will soon have an all-electric “minicar” to call its own. That will come in the form of a re-badged Hyundai i10 (pictured above), which is expected to pack a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and a range somewhere south of a hundred miles. No word on pricing just yet either, but the car is set to roll out in late 2011, with production tapped at a modest 2,000 units for 2012.

Tesla Model S to get faster Sport edition, leave sedan in the dust

Tesla looks set to offer another slightly more aggressive, slightly faster model alongside its Model S sedan [pictured]. The high-performance, zero-emission (and tentatively-named) Model S Sport packs a larger battery, extending its single-charge range to 300 miles. Green Car Reports adds that it’ll even get optional aerodynamic wheels adding another 20 miles to the car’s range. Acceleration has also been boosted, with 0 to 60MPH cut to under 4.6 seconds in the sporty upgrade. This should be the perfect vehicle for evading capture in the gasoline-poor robopocalyptic future. The Sport is reportedly set to launch alongside the standard Model S next year.

Toyota breaks compressed air speed record, hits 80.3MPH with Ku:Rin

Thankfully styled like the more dashing cousin in the typically awkward-looking compressed air car family, Toyota’s Ku:Rin (meaning Air-Wheel) has smashed the speed record for cars powered by (not necessarily hot) air. Sure, measuring a svelte 0.8m across, there’s certainly no space for the kids or the groceries, but it can reach a maximum speed of 80.3MPH. All that driving force is generated from compressed air which acts as the fuel, expanding and powering the single motor. Don’t expect air compressors to replace those petrol pumps just yet — the range for this streamlined beauty is a meager two miles. Take a look at NHK‘s report in More Coverage for redefining of “blown away.”

Edison2’s Very Light Car is now very electric, too

When we caught a glimpse of Edison2’s Very Light Car earlier this year, we were told to expect an electric version of the X-Prize winning featherweight in the near future. Well, here it is. Known as the eVLC, this “supremely aerodynamic” concept car is powered by a 10-kWh battery pack and, believe it or not, can comfortably seat four passengers. The plug-in has yet to go through the EPA’s official round of mileage testing, but Edison2 claims that the eVLC is far more fuel efficient than the Nissan Leaf and believes it could even receive the highest MPGe rating ever awarded. There’s still no word on when this little critter could hit the market, but you can check out Autoblog Green‘s gallery (at the source link below) for a more extensive tour of what Edison2 calls the “inevitable future of the automobile.”

Artega SE electric supercar is coming to the US, we go eyes-on

Artega SE electric supercar is coming to the US, we go eyes-on

With the Tesla Roadster‘s tenure drawing to a close and a proper two-seat replacement seemingly just a twinkle in Peter Rawlinson‘s eye at this point, there’s something of a coming void in the world of the electric supercar. Artega would love to fill that with the SE. It’s an all-electric version of the company’s GT supercar, and while the GT will not see a release on American shores, we got confirmation from Artega that the battery-powered SE will — eventually. The 375 horsepower motor drives the car to 62MPH in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 126.5. Maximum range is 172 miles, but drive the car “more enthusiastically” and you can expect a more realistic 124.

The car was announced earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and here in Frankfurt we were able to spend a few minutes ogling its curves in a variety of interesting colors, including one model with a cut-away fender showing off the positioning of some of the 16 battery modules. 12 of those are scattered around the rear of the car, while four are up front, giving the car a rearward-biased 40:60 weight distribution. Cost is said to be 150,000 euro, or about $207,000. That’s nearly twice the cost of a Roadster. Worth it? We’ll see.

Fisker Karma pushes deliveries back again as it awaits federal emissions certification

It looks like those eager to finally take a Fisker Karma EV home will have to wait a bit longer, again. This time, though, the delay is largely out of the company’s hands, as it’s simply waiting for final federal certification on emissions regulations before it delivers the first test vehicles to dealers. According to the company, the first of those are now expected to be delivered by the end of September, although at least some dealers apparently won’t be fulfilling orders until the first week of November.

Rimac Automobili unveils 1,088 horsepower Concept One electric supercar

Rimac Automobili unveils 1,088 horsepower Concept One electric supercar

When you need four digits and a comma to specify the amount of horsepower your car puts down, you know you’re talking about something very, very special indeed. Such is the case for the Concept One, the first car from virtual unknown manufacturer Rimac Automobili, styled by designer Adriano Mudri. The firm (which is Croatian, not Italian, by the way) has created this machine and given it four electric motors. They combine for an astounding 1,088 horsepower but, perhaps even more importantly, enable torque vectoring across all four wheels — varying the power at each corner to pull the car around turns.

That performance equates to a 0 – 62MPH time of 2.8 seconds, while the maximum range is rated as 600km (about 375 miles) thanks to a 92kWh lithium ion phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. It is, alas, just a concept for now, but with a little bit of funding the folks at Rimac hope to bring it to market. And we hope they do too.

Opel shows off all-electric One Euro Car concept

It’s saving most of the details for the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, but GM subsidiary Opel has now offered up the first glimpse of its all-electric One Euro Car, which seems bound to turn a few heads on the show floor. The car’s name comes from the company’s promise that the it will consume just one Euro’s worth of energy (or about $1.40) for every 100 kilometers, though there’s no indication of a price for the car itself other than that it’d be “affordable” — if it ever goes into production, that is. Otherwise, the company’s only saying that it will boast a top speed of 120 kilometers (or 75 miles) per hour, room for two, and a total weight about a third that of a modern compact car.
