Tazzari Zero’s preliminary specs released

Italian industrial firm Tazzari has announced preliminary specs and launched a new website for its plug-in auto, the Zero. Measuring 113.5 inches long and sporting 15-inch wheels, the city-bound electric car weighs in at 1,200 pounds — 312 of that from the lithium-ion Fe battery. It’ll handle 88 miles with a full charge that takes 9 hours to fill, but you can reportedly juice up to 80% in just 50 minutes. Top speed is 56 MPH, so don’t expect to be driving this on the highway, and it can go from 0 to 31 in under 5 seconds. The company says it’s due out later this year in Europe and the Carribean for less than 20,000 Euros ($25,760), and yes, there’s a dozen Crayola-inspired colors available. Hit up the official site for a trailer.

Aptera unveils full specs for its flagship 2e

Heads up, the fine folks at Autoblog Green have gotten their oil-encrusted hands on a full list of specs for Aptera’s 2e electric car, now on display at this year’s Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference. The 1,500-pound aerodynamic vessel has just a 0.15 coefficient of drag and features a smart key, emergency tire inflation, and energy-reflective solar glass. Inside, we’ve got LED dome lights mounted overhead, a DVD-based navigation system, optional rear backup camera, and interior fabrics / plastics made from recycled materials. The company’s still touting 100 miles on a single charge of the 10 to 13 kWh lithium ion phosphate battery pack. No new details on price, which we last heard would be between $25,000 and $45,000 — zipping down the road in a space-age cruiser doesn’t come cheap, you know.

Detroit News: Ford EV Project Well Underway

Ford_Focus_EV_DN.jpg

Ford Motor Co. and Canadian-based Magna International are working on an electric vehicle that Ford plans to bring to market in America by 2011, putting it in potential competition with GM’s Chevy Volt due around the same time, according to the Detroit News.

The report said that Magna surprised Ford back in September, following months of talks, by driving up one day in a Ford Focus that Magna had converted to battery power on their own in secret. “It was a phenomenal car,” said Lisa Drake, Ford’s chief engineer for hybrid programs, in the report. “We were highly, highly impressed.”

Fast forward four months: Executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. told the press gathered in Cobo Arena plans to bring a car based on that prototype to market in 2011. Ford has been racing plug-in hybrid versions of the Ford Escape on testing grounds, but is now pursuing this joint venture with Magna in a pure battery-powered vehicle in tandem.

The report said that the production vehicle being developed with Magna will be based on the new global Focus platform, due out in 2010. “The electric version will have no gasoline motor, but will be limited to a range of 100 miles on a single charge—enough, Ford says, because most motorists in America average less than 40 miles a day.”

Tesla Puts Model S Factory on Hold: Report

Tesla_Roadsters_Racetrack.jpg

Tesla can’t catch a break lately—even if it’s clear they deserve part of the blame themselves. The automaker has decided to put plans for a new factory in San Jose, previously announced last year for the Model S, on hold for now, according to Silicon Alley Insider.

It turns out Tesla couldn’t raise the necessary $100 million in venture capital in order to build the factory. “Instead, the company is hoping to get $400 million from the government as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program,” the report said; of that, $250 million would go into the factory and $150 million into a separate powertrain facility.

The report speculates that the move may be a negotiating tactic on the part of Tesla to get the city of San Jose to come back with a sweeter offer. Tesla currently plans to have the Model S, a less expensive, four-door sedan intended to compliment the Tesla Roadster, on the road for 2011.

Takeoka Jidosha Kogei’s electric minicar gets slightly more macro, even more cute

Takeoka Jidosha Kogei's electric minicar gets slightly more macro, even more cute

Japanese minicar manufacturer Takeoka Jidosha Kogei’s Milieu R is the perfect car for anti-social folks, featuring only one seat and a range of 50km that’s just enough to make your commute while being limited enough to get you out of going to the bar afterward. Thus far those who socialize only with (very) small animals have been left out of the company’s offerings, but that all changes with this new prototype, the T10. It’s ever so slightly larger, gaining 90mm in length and 40mm in width, making room for a shelf to the left of the driver’s seat intended for some sort of pet (we’re guessing hamster, possibly a petite guinea pig). The other specs, including that 50 km range and top speed of 55 km/h, stay the same, meaning there’d still be no concerns about getting to work early or having to socialize afterward, but we’re not sure its charming looks make up for a price tag set to be somewhere north of ¥856,000 (about $9,520); awfully close to that of a “real” car. At least it looks a little safer than the HUVO.

Hy Tric Electro Cycle

HyTric_Electro_Cycle.jpg

Hy Tric Motors, a company based in Ventura, California that offers electric vehicles and electric retro fit kits, has introduced the somewhat puzzling Hy Tric Electro Cycle, AutoblogGreen reports. The Electro Cycle has a top speed of 125 mph and can run up to 250 miles on a single charge, according to an extremely sparse Web site the company has set up for the car.

Hy Tric Motors lists the Electro Cycle for sale for $24,000… and that’s about all it says. This wouldn’t be significant except that the company already sells at least three other electric vehicles, including a little $10,000 runabout called the 2009 AFS HYTRIC Mini XR, and a couple of larger vehicles (one of which looks a lot like the Electro Cycle, but is apparently different). At any rate, it sure looks interesting—if extremely confusing.

New Mostly Electric Car: Opel Ampera Debuts at Geneva Auto Show

Opel Ampera
General Motors is extending its extended-range electric car line across the Atlantic Ocean with the planned introduction of the Opel Ampera at the Geneva Auto Show in March. Opel is GM’s European subsidiary and and the Ampera shares the same drivetrain as the Chevrolet Volt as well as with the Cadillac Converj (see Electric Cars Take Center Stage at Detroit Auto Show) that was introduced at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show this month. The five-door, four-seat Ampera will run for up to 60 km (36 miles) on electric power and then switch to an internal combustion engine for as long as the gas tank or your bladder holds out. The lithium ion batteries will charge on 230-volt electric power; in the U.S. there are options for 120 volt charging (slow but 120 VAC is probably already in your garage) or 230 volts (only in the garage if you’ve got an electric dryer).

Shelby’s amazing Aero EV: 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds, 10 minute recharge

Man juices in a boil? No shame, that’s Shelby Super Cars’ Aero EV in pursuit of the “world’s fastest production electric car” title. SSC just came clean with the details behind its All-Electric Scalable Powertrain (AESP) producing 1,000 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque that rips the Aero EV through 0 to 60 in just 2.5 seconds at a 208mph top speed. Compare that to the Tesla Roadster’s 0-60 in 3.9 seconds (or 3.7 for the 2009 sport model) and you’ll understand all the hubbub, bub. Better yet, the 150-220 mile battery can be refilled in just 10 minutes (Tesla takes 3.5 hours) from a 220V service thanks to what SSC calls its “Charge on the Run” onboard charging system — something that nearly eliminates (or at least minimizes) the need for a battery swapping infrastructure. The first full-scale, pre-production Ultimate Aero EV should be on the streets before June with production deliveries expected in the fourth quarter. Now we just need a price.

Aptera rolls out first pre-production vehicle, promises shipments in October

Although the swoopy Aptera electric went up for pre-orders back in October of 2007, we haven’t really seen much of the futuristic car outside of the odd Star Trek cameo. Hopefully that’s about to change, though — the company just rolled out the first pre-production example its flagship model, the 2e. The three-wheeled car gets the equivalent of 200mpg, and the company claims the lithium-ion battery pack will last for 100 miles on a single charge. Aptera isn’t giving out final pricing information apart from “between $25,000 and $45,000” but it says over 4,000 potential customers have already signed up for a planned California-only October release. We’ll see how it goes — and we’d bet the folks at the Automotive X-Prize are keeping a sharp eye as well.

Aptera Wheels Out Pre-Production 2e

Aptera%202e.jpg

After a technical road bump and the ensuing production delay, Aptera — the maker of the battery-electric 2e three-wheeler — says its airplane-like EV is finally ready. The first pre-production model of what can be considered the world’s most innovative eco-mobile was wheeled out yesterday, echoing the excitement of more than 4,000 eager drivers who already reserved the vehicle.

According to Edmunds, the 2e “will be evaluated for performance, durability and fit and finish prior to start of retail production in October.” The car is expected to go zero to 60 mph in under 6 seconds, topping out at 90 mph and traveling 100 miles on a single charge.

Like the Tesla Roadster, Aptera’s battery-powered rival, the 2e is a two-seater. However, the Aptera will be sold at only a fraction of Tesla’s near-$100,000 sticker. With initial sales limited to California, the 2e will range from $25,000 to $45,000.
