Taurus concept adds a touch of bullish masculinity to personal transportation

Ah, the old electric two-wheeler, a dream of so many ecologically conscious geeks and yet never popular enough to achieve its Gaia-saving objective. Enter designer Eric Lanuza, with his own spin on the idea, who brings in a few exciting curves straight from the world of motorbikes, but keeps the self-balancing antics of the concept’s progenitor. Setting aside the cute toro theme, we reckon the addition of a seat will be one of the biggest differences, since — though they may not be wiling to admit it — most people don’t consider something a vehicle unless they can sit in or on it. Hit the source for a photo gallery, though we’d advise against holding out any hopes for this making it past the concept drawing board.

Chrysler says all-electric Fiat 500 will carry Americans, American Touristers in 2012

Curvy, sumptuous concept and prototype electric vehicles are definitely easy on the eyes, but if you’ve been searching for something a touch more “real,” fresh-out-of-bankruptcy Chrysler has one car that’s not going back to the drawing board. Our compatriots over at Autoblog report that the all-electric Fiat 500 EV — which saw a limited run of 100 in Europe and made a cameo at this year’s Detroit Auto Show — will actually be produced and sold in the US starting in 2012. Since the automaker’s not talking specs, it’s hard to say how it’ll compare to a Volt or a Leaf, but history (peek the ‘More Coverage’ link down below) tells us the original electric Fiat 500 got up to 120 miles on a charge. We’d caution you not to get too worked up by that hot hatch action, though — despite the fact that the Peapod made it briefly to market, this isn’t the first time Chrysler’s told us to expect a commercial vehicle we can charge. Here’s hoping for better results this go ’round.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: skyscrapers, combustible ice, and coffee-powered cars

The Week in Green is a new item from our friends at Inhabitat, recapping the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us.

This week Inhabitat took a peek into the future of our built environment by showcasing the most incredible designs from the 2010 eVolo Skyscraper Competition. From water purifying buildings to cities stacked on stilts and self-sufficient underwater skyscrapers, there’s no shortage of futuristic thinking on tap.

Alternative energy was also a hot topic this week as China launched plans to tap “combustible ice” as an energy source and researchers at MIT discovered a new way to produce electricity by sending thermopower waves through carbon nanotubes.

We also saw several exciting advances in efficient transportation as South Korea rolled out an EV that is recharged by electrified roads and researchers at UT Dallas revealed a heat-scavenging tailpipe that may one day help power cars. And if you think your Prius gets good mileage, get a load of this super-efficient gas engine that gets 98 MPG. Finally, if you rely on that morning cup of coffee to get your engine running, you won’t want to miss this coffee-powered car that gets 56 espressos per mile

TAG Heuer’s Tesla Roadster gets pictured on the road

The good people of Tesla couldn’t leave us with just stock studio photography of their new TAG Heuer special edition vehicle, oh no. They’ve treated us to a full gallery of the car out on the road, sporting its new regalia and that radical paintjob with pride. To remind you, the only special thing about this edition is indeed that TAG Heuer has reskinned its exterior, while a center console mount for a Meridiist phone and room for a Limited Edition Stopwatch can be classified as product placements for the crowd who’d buy things just because there’s an allotted space for them. Anyhow, a couple more pictures await after the break (sans that silly flare on the Tesla logo above) or you can hit the source for the full experience.

Tata Nano EV represents the feasible side of our electric future

Oh sure, this might not accelerate to ludicrous speed in 3 seconds flat, and it might not look like something Jules Verne brought back from the future, but it is the one electro-vehicular concept we can reliably expect to see hit retail in 2011. Indian carmaker Tata promised us an eco-friendly version of its ultra-affordable Nano, and what you see above is the corporeal fulfillment of that pledge. Our comrades at Autoblog report that the Nano EV will go into production alongside the Indica Vista EV and should be available to buy at some point next year. As far as we’re concerned, when it comes to cars other people have to drive, this might be at the very top of our list. See more of it after the break.

Lotus outs wild Evora 414E Hybrid plug-in concept car

Concept cars are like unicorns — they’re so prevalent and vaporous, they’re hardly worth remarking upon. Every so often, though, one pops out into the ether that’s really worth a second look. Lotus’ Evora 414E Hybrid concept certainly fits into that category. This plug-in car boasts (or would boast, should it come into existence), 1.2 liter, three-cylinder engine, independent electric motors for the rear wheels, with a range of about 300 miles. The glass engine cover pictured above, however, is just one of the features we find ourselves double-taking here. The Evora 414E would also pack some ‘vroom vroom’ noises by way of its audio system to take care of the ever-pressing danger of silent auto engines. The engine can operate on alcohol-based fuels or regular old gasoline, and the battery-only range is in the neighborhood of 35 miles. The Lotus Evora 414E hybrid will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

BMW commits to Megacity EV by 2013, will start by testing ActiveE all-electric 1 series next year

BMW‘s first all-electric regular series production vehicle, the Megacity EV, has now been set in stone and inserted into the company’s roadmap for a commercial launch in 2012 or 2013. The Bavarian automaker has gone official with word that it plans to use its Leipzig assembly plant to produce the car and further notes that it’ll feature a similar setup to the ActiveE concept (pictured above), which is set for field testing in 2011. Essentially a 1 series that feeds off the electric grid rather than the nearest diesel pump, the ActiveE runs off an array of lithium-ion batteries á la the well liked but recently troubled Tesla Roadster, and will serve as a test mule for refining the underlying technology. Generating up to 170bhp might not sound all that impressive, but it should be more than sufficient for the urban commuters these vehicles will be aimed at. Now we just need Mercedes and Audi to match that release schedule and the electric car should finally have its day in the mainstream sun.

Mercedes-Benz F800 Style teases us with fuel cells, aggressive new look

Mercedes has just announced its latest “research vehicle,” the F800 Style, and as concepts are wont to do, it intersperses some extremely ambitious goals with plenty of viable and forthcoming improvements. The two powertrain options touted by the company represent this best. On the one hand, there’s a perfectly reasonable PHEV setup that will generate north of 400bhp combined grunt and offer an 18-mile range when abstaining from gas power. On the other, there’s an electric drive with fuel cells system that will get you a spectacular 375-mile cruising range — if only it’d make it to real products, which seems highly unlikely right now. All the same, as the company’s premium sedan concept, the F800 Style represents the direction of Mercedes’ future designs, both in its external styling and in the internal focus on becoming friendlier to the environment. We can find little reason to object to either. Check out a couple more pics after the break, then hit Autoblog for more details.

Researchers say new material could let cars be powered by their bodywork

It likely won’t be ready for your next vehicle purchase, but some researchers from Imperial College London say that this rather modest-looking piece of material could eventually do nothing short of change of the way that cars are powered. The material itself is still a bit of a mystery, as you might expect, but it’s apparently able to store and discharge electrical energy, and (here’s the real kicker) is strong and light enough to be used for a car’s bodywork — essentially making the car itself one giant battery. That would obviously open up a whole host of possibilities, including being used to complement traditional batteries for even longer runtimes, or being used on its own to make smaller and lighter vehicles. The applications also wouldn’t necessarily be limited to cars, and the researchers specifically mention cellphones as another area that could see smaller and lighter (or longer-lasting) devices if the material is used. Let’s get on that, shall we? Video demonstration after the break.

[Thanks, Clinton C]

Tesla to Cease Roadster Production in 2011

Tesla_Roadster_Silver.jpg

Tesla Motors plans to cease production of its signature Roadster electric sports car next year, according to paperwork Tesla filed ahead of its IPO for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Autopia reports that a replacement Roadster won’t hit the road until 2013, leaving the upcoming 2012 Tesla Model S sedan as the company’s only car for a year. The current wisdom is that this is because Lotus is retooling its manufacturing plants to accommodate the next-generation Lotus Elise, upon which the current Tesla Roadster is based.

The report said that Tesla may not have a problem if the Model S launches on time. But if it doesn’t, the automaker may not have any cars on the showroom floor for a while. I can see how Tesla arrived at this plan, but that doesn’t make me any less worried.
