Sony Ericsson Idou revealed a little early

We’re just getting into our seats for Sony Ericsson’s MWC press event, but it looks like the partnership’s newest Symbian offering has leaked a little early. Called the Idou, it sports a 16:9 touchscreen, a 12.1 megapixel camera with a xenon flash, and an official web site that doesn’t seem to be active yet. We’ll hopefully be finding out more in just minutes, we’ll let you know!

Update: Our tipster says the above model might be a concept, but a similar device will be released sometime around the second half of 2009 — we’ll keep you posted as we get more info.

Update 2:
Nope — it’s real.

Ericsson promises 42Mbps HSPA demo using multi-carrier technology

Leave Ericsson alone for five seconds, and it goes and makes the technology it was just bragging about seem archaic. Just in case Telstra’s 21Mbps Next G network seemed a bit — how do you say, sluggish? — Ericsson will be showcasing a new approach that enables peak downlink data rates of 42Mbps at Mobile World Congress. In order to achieve such tremendous speeds, it will rely on its so-called multi-carrier technology, which is the next (or is that next-next?) generation of HSPA. The secret? It allows users to “receive data simultaneously on two frequency channels,” which doubles the data rate in the coverage area of an HSPA network and on the cell edge. The best part of all this isn’t that you can one day look forward to crushing your cable modem with a wireless USB stick, it’s that “one day” will be ready to happen before the dawn of 2010. Huzzah!

Sony Ericsson exec dismisses rumors of a schism

Despite some nasty financial losses and a rumored smackdown of a PSP phone proposal, the Sony Ericsson joint venture is apparently as strong as ever. That’s what Senior Marketing Manager Richard Dorman is saying, denying any talks of a split. He also noted that both companies had been losing money in their respective handset division prior to the assimilation, and the partnership is “full steam ahead.” That’s great, now how about showing us some more Hikaru, hm?

Hitachi H001 with 3D display leads up KDDI au’s Spring 2009 lineup

So KDDI’s latest lineup of new phones features the usual array of 8.1 megapixel cameras, wide VGA displays, one-seg TV tuners, and teleporters, but one particular handset stood out: Hitachi’s Wooo H001. The dual-hinge flip’s claim to fame — well, besides the bizarre color scheme — has to be the stereoscopic IPS display that presumably uses the same parallax barrier method shown off by the carrier late last year. The phone will happily serve up 3D-ified versions of various UI elements and mobile TV content, and when you start to get woozy (or Wooozy, as it were), just flip a switch and you’re back to the reassuring flatness you’re used to. It’ll launch in three colors in April, and naturally, you’ll have to be in Japan to get it.
