Mitsubishi launching eight electrified vehicles by 2015

Mitsubishi launching eight electrified vehicles by 2015

Mitsu’s i MiEV may be getting off to a slow start, but it’s just the beginning. The company has announced a number of programs collectively titled “Environment Initiative Program 2015,” a sort of stepping stone toward a broader reaching “Environmental Vision 2020.” That Vision indicates a desire to have 20 percent of Mitsubishi sales be either pure electric vehicles or at least plug-in hybrids. The 2015 initiative sets a more modest goal of five percent, and to get there the company will launch a whopping eight electro-augmented vehicles between now and 2015. It starts with a commercialized MiEV this year, moving to two PHEVs next year, a new EV in 2013, and then another new EV in 2014 — hopefully with names that roll off the tongue a little better than “i MiEV.” Might we suggest the 2014 Mitsubishi Mitueevee?

Tesla confirms plans to unveil electric Model X SUV this year, $30k car by 2015

Tesla confirms plans to unveil electric Model X SUV this year, $30k car by 2015

We’ve known for some time that Tesla hoped to use the underpinnings of the luscious Model S as a base platform upon which other cars would be built, even minivans. Elon Musk in the past has mentioned a Model X SUV due sometime in 2014 and he’s just re-confirmed that we’ll be getting our first glimpse of the thing sometime this year. Few further details are known but we wouldn’t be surprised if it shared some components with the Tesla-powered Toyota RAV4 EV. Musk also took the opportunity to re-confirm that a genuinely affordable electric Tesla is coming by 2015, something priced under $30,000 and, while probably not quite as bodacious as either the Roadster or the Model S, hopefully it’ll be a bit more invigorating than the Leaf.

Meguru is the world’s first EV rickshaw it didn’t know it needed (video)

Meguru is the world's first EV rickshaw it didn't know it needed

If you’ve never experience the thrill that is fearing for your life while some crazy rickshaw jockey takes you tearing through a busy street, two-stroke engine screaming even louder than you, you haven’t really lived. Soon there’ll be no 175cc engine to drown out your lamentations, with the Meguru offering all that thrill and style with an EV powertrain. It has a traditional Japanese design with motorcycle-derived innards but a cushy (and tackily upholstered) back seat for two — or maybe three depending on how friendly everyone is. The side curtains are made of bamboo and washi paper, giving it a look that says “I’m at least partially organic.” It’s available now for a mere ¥100,000; about $1,200.

Update: A little further Googling has found a number of prior permutations for gas-free rickshaws, including a solar model, making us think the “world’s first” claim here is perhaps a little dubious — as it often is. Still, we’ll give it world’s first mass produced EV rickshaw.

Audi commissions four US universities to research urban mobility issues

We’ve seen what other companies have in store for our automotive future, and now Audi’s given us a glimpse of what we can expect from its car of tomorrow. The company’s Silicon Valley research lab have teamed up with four universities here in the US to develop technologies that will give city drivers the full KITT treatment — vehicles that recognize the driver (and his or her preferences) and can detect and avoid dangers and traffic delays. Called the Audi Urban Intelligence Assist initiative, each participating university has a specific area of urban mobility research ranging from urban crash analysis to aggregating historical and real-time traffic, parking, and pedestrian data in cities. The schools will also study how best to deliver relevant information to drivers and get them from point A to point B as easily and efficiently as possible. Looks like the groundwork is being laid for a German counterpart to GM’s EN-V we test drove in Vegas, and we look forward to the fruits of their labor. Ich bin ein Ingolstädter!

Gordon Murray’s electric T.27 city car crashed in the name of science, holds up beautifully

Gordon Murray's electric T.27 city car crashed in the name of science, holds up beautifully

We asked for some crazy things in our vision of the car of the future, and we’re learning that many of them can be found in Gordon Murray’s implementation of his car of tomorrow, the T.27. EV power? Check. Odd central seating? Check. Racing-inspired safety measures? Double-check, as evidenced by these crash test photos which, as you can see, are remarkably close to the company’s computer simulations. It’s a tiny thing, just a little over eight feet long and weighing under 1,500lbs, though for that you’ll get a top seed of about 65mph and a range of between 80 and 100 miles — and the ability to run into a wall at a 40 percent offset without injury. Running prototypes are expected on the road in just a few months and, with any luck, production versions of this (and the gasoline-powered T.25) could be hitting the streets by next year.

ZMP RoboCar MEV seats only one but can drive even when alone (video)

ZMP RoboCar MEV seats only one but can drive even when alone (video)

Watch the video below and you’ll see that this thing is clearly not going to win any land speed records, and with nary a door it’s hardly all-weather compliant. But, the RoboCar MEV from ZMP is more of a research vehicle, a self-driving car that’s built on an electric microcar platform. It uses GPS and a plethora of front and rear sensors to know where it’s going, an evolution of the Linux-powered 1/10 scale model we saw back in 2009. Just, you know, bigger. And pricier. Way pricier. Yes, you can buy one, but you’re looking at about $35,000 for the simplest version, the Type A, which only has automatic speed control. The Type B has steering control as well and costs about $59,000, while Type C is a whopping $84,000 and adds automatic braking control along with a full suite of imaging and intertial sensors. Order now for delivery in about two months — in Japan, naturally.

Wheego’s so-called Whip LiFe delayed, supposedly still coming soon

Wheego

We’d thought the thing were on their way, scoring EPA certification back in December and, in theory, almost ready to roll. Turns out Department of Transportation approval is taking a little longer than anticipated, and so the $32,995, 65mph, 100 mile range cars still aren’t fully road legal. The company has indicated it’s received 500 orders for the things, orders which it hopes to start shipping by the end of this month. Given how many X’s we have on our calendar this month that may prove to be optimistic as well, but still probably more realistic than your chances of getting a Leaf this year.

Silver Tesla Model S Alpha hits the road, carves some corners (video)

Silver Tesla Model S Alpha hits the road, carves some corners (video)

We’ve seen it inside and out. We’ve seen it naked. Now we’re seeing it do its thing. Tesla has just released a tasty video of the Alpha version of the Model S carving some corners, and while this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the car in motion this is the best taste of the Alpha we’ve yet been given. Check out the video after the break and, no, your speakers aren’t broken, it is that quiet. Oh, and if you’d like to know more about what’s going on under all that chrome and silver make sure you peruse our chat with Chief Engineer Peter Rawlinson.

ECOtality teams with Sprint to connect Blink EV charging network

ECOtality teamed up with Best Buy a few months back to expand its network of Blink EV chargers, and it’s now finally announced which company will actually be connecting that network. ECOtality will be relying on Sprint’s Command Center M2M solution, which will handle things like monitoring and electronic payments, and allow ECOtality to display digital content for advertising or other information, among a host of other network-related things. From an end-user perspective, that also means that folks will be able to keep watch on the Blink network from various devices, find chargers near them with GPS, and receive notifications of a charge interruption or completion. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

ADAC crash tests first production Mitsubishi i-MiEV, it makes a mess but scores well

ADAC crash tests first production Mitsubishi i-MiEV, makes a mess but scores well

Looks like Volvo’s C30 Electric isn’t the only EV paying a heavy price for wanting to be run on the roads. Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV, one of the first modern full-bore electric autos to be promised to hit US shores (but certainly not the first to make it), has just been subjected to crash testing by the ADAC, Europe’s largest motorist club. The car went through both 40mph frontal and rear offset impacts, similar to the sort used by our own humble NHTSA. The car didn’t score perfect marks, with some deformation in the footwell, but there were no major problems noted and, most importantly, the electrical systems safety cut automatically upon impact. This means no surprise electrocutions for anyone on the inside or out, which is a good thing — unless you’re a mutant lizard who enjoys such things.

Update: We’ve updated the source link to the ADAC site, where you can see some additional images and even video of the crash. You’ll need to exit the Google Translation window to view them, though.
