Tesla Model S is bundled up at CES, we unwrap it (video)

We’ll get this out of the way up front: no, we didn’t get to drive it. In fact we didn’t even get to sit in its creamy white seats, a tragedy that we’re still a little sensitive about. But we did get to open the door of the Tesla Model S, testing out the trick powered door handles that motor themselves out after a touch and then, when the door is closed, zip back flush to the sheet metal. It’s a nice detail, one that we think would probably lose its ability to inspire wonder after about a week. But, for now, it’s cool. Check out a video of that and other details below.

Ford set to unveil Focus Electric at CES, which just so happens to be where we are

Focus electric

The North American International Auto show is one week away, the place where many auto makers domestic and foreign will choose to unveil their next hot happening. Not Ford — at least, not this year. The company has had a significant presence here at CES for the past few years and, in 2011, it’s going to really ramp things up by announcing a whole new car. Or, at least, an electric version of an existing one. We don’t know the details yet (other than it having a silly glowing plug door), but there’s an all-electric Focus set to be unveiled at 11:00am local time (that’s 2:00 in the afternoon east coasters) on Friday. The conference will be livestreaming if you want to play along at home, but rest assured we’ll be there too.

Mitsubishi i MiEV electric car launches in Costa Rica next month for a mere $61,500

Mitsubishi's i MiEV launches in Costa Rica next month for a mere $61,500

Did you miss out on the Nissan Leaf pre-orders? Yeah, us too. Are you planning on cruising around in Costa Rica sometime after February? Sadly you can count us out there, but if you’ve checked both boxes you might want be interested to know that Mitsubishi’s i MiEV electric car will be available there starting next month, making it the first country in this hemisphere to sell them. The car offers a 100 mile maximum range and a top speed of 80, quite comparable to the Leaf, but the $61,500 price down there almost doubles Nissan’s offering up here. That’s also twice what the i MiEV is expected to sell for when it ships to the mainland this fall, quite possibly thanks to the massive import duties applied to cars in the land of Pura Vida. But, with as few as 25 of the machines offered for sale, this is something of a niche release anyhow.

LincVolt dies in a fire, is being rebuilt (video)

Warm up those phoenix references, because this LincVolt story is a perfect candidate. We’ve been following Neil Young’s crazy retro next-gen conveyance since its inception in 2008, and sadly the news of late has not been good. Just a few weeks after the car (and its proprietor) made an appearance at SEMA it (the car) was left unattended while charging in a warehouse. The pearly white land yacht caught fire and nearly burned the place down, but enough was able to be salvaged for the team to start a rebuild, largely thanks to not one but two donor 1958 and ’59 Lincoln Continentals that will be providing the necessary panels and parts to replace those destroyed in the fire. You can see the pre-fire car and some highlights from SEMA in the video below, though you’ll have to wait until summer to see it looking that good again.

Editorial: I’m ready for my car of the future, and it doesn’t even have to fly

DNP Editorial: I'm ready for my car of the future, and it doesn't even have to fly

Face it: you’re never going to have a flying car. Even if the Moller Skycar were cheap and common enough for everyone to be able to afford, the first time some bleary-eyed morning commuter spilled coffee on their lap and made a spiraling dive into a kindergarten, they’d all be grounded. Permanently. We might get there some day, but the next few generations of tomorrow’s cars are going to stay firmly planted on the ground. I’m okay with that. In fact, I like that. After all, it’s pretty fun to drive on the ground — or a lake, if the ice is thick enough.

If we’re stuck with such pedestrian things as wheels and tires and fenders, what’s the next-generation of cars going to look like? Are hybrids really a hot thing or are they the automotive equivalent of a transition medium? Will tomorrow’s cars continue today’s horsepower wars or are a nation’s dyno graphs on the verge of a beige econo-precipice the likes of which we haven’t seen since the ’70s fuel crisis? Damned if I know, but I do at least have an idea of what I believe the next generation of cars should be, something that could be produced in five years or less and would totally rock my world. Maybe it will rock yours, too.

Tesla assures $57k Model S will be profitable, sexy looking too

Tesla assures $57k Model S is profitable, sexy looking too

The path to availability for cars of the future is one wrought with roadblocks, potholes, and indeed IEDs — increasingly expensive developments. This was most recently seen with Fisker’s Karma getting a price boost up to $95,900, a hefty jump over initial $80,000 estimates, but Tesla is taking this chance to give new reassurances that its Model S sedan’s price of $57,000 is comfortable. That’s largely thanks to smaller Li-Ion batteries, which are similar to those used in laptops and, according to Musk, will be swappable as a single unit. This type of batteries are much less expensive to produce than the large, monolithic packs used in the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt, about $200 per kWH vs. $750 for Nissan’s. That’s cheap enough for Tesla to assure that it can still make a profit on the Model S, despite its cost being set at roughly half that of the Roadster. Will that still be the case when it hits production in 2012? We can’t wait to find out.

Update: Defendor commented with a link to this CNET article in which Elon Musk indicates the battery pack will be swappable too. The post was updated to mention this.

CHAdeMO EV quick-chargers to get wider tests across US, 80% capacity in 30 mins or less

CHAdeMO EV quick-chargers to get wider tests across US, 80% capacity in 30 minutes or less

The idea of waiting around for hours for your EV to recharge is soon to become a thing of the past — or rather it already is in Japan, where the CHAdeMO-style chargers are enabling cars like the Nissan Leaf to get to 80 percent battery capacity in just 30 minutes. Now they’re properly starting their US invasion. The first assault came in Portland a few months back, with 310 more stations lining up for deployment in Arizona, California, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, and elsewhere in Washington according to Yomiuri. The move will cost about $230 million total, though there’s no word on whether they’ll be publically available like the one in Portland is. CHAdeMO, which is a play on the Japanese “O cha demo ikaga desuka” (“let’s have tea while charging”), works by handling the AC to DC conversion externally and providing power at up to 500VDC and 125 Amps, much higher than on-board AC/DC converters can handle. This drives down recharging time massively — even if you don’t like tea.

Via Motors E-REV hybrid trucks power your commute and the job site too (video)

Via Motors E-REV hybrid trucks power your commute and the job site too

Hybrid cars have officially jumped the shark, boring drivers from coast to coast as they smugly hypermile wherever they’re going. Meanwhile, those with big trucks have been relatively out of luck, having to stop frequently for gas — and to scrape the remains of those little hybrids out of their fender wells. That’s changing soon, with Via Motors taking its rebranded Chevy trucks (dig that flying V on the grille) and offering them to fleets in 2011, with sales to individuals coming two years later (you can get in line now for $1,000 down). Big companies like, apparently, PG&E will be able to roll in these so-called E-REV trucks that offer either 20 or 40 miles of electric range, augmented by an onboard generator. Yes, it’s a series hybrid layout similar in theory to the Volt, with the internal combustion engine charging the batteries which, in turn, send juice to the 268hp motor. Interestingly, though, that generator can power other things as well, providing 120 or 240V to tools, lights, maybe even hot tubs if you’re a super cool contractor. No word on anticipated vehicle cost nor efficiency, but we’re not expecting miracles on either front.

Wheego Whip LiFe grabs up EPA certification

Yes! Another reason to write about the darling and awesomely-named Wheego Whip LiFe! This time, it’s good news indeed, as the all electric micro-car has received EPA certification. The cars, which are priced at a reasonably affordable $32,995 (or $25,495 after the Federal tax credit), are now simply waiting for final approval from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration before they can roll into dealerships. It looks like the cars will ship at the beginning of the year now, with production well underway for the past few months. We’ll take two, please.

Nissan Leaf gets the ‘family’ review treatment, earns high marks

The writers over at Busy Mommy Media have run the Nissan Leaf through a special battery of ‘family’ tests to produce the kind of review of the EV that we don’t see every day around here. Still, the family perspective is an especially interesting one for the electric vehicle, since widespread adoption will largely depend on how it fares in just such lifestyles. So how did the Leaf fare? Exceedingly well, it turns out, getting high marks for performance, cargo space, and interior space. The only problem raised was the fact that the reviewer could not fit all three of her required car seats into the back seat, but was able to change them out for slimmer models which did, in fact, fit. Check out the video after the break for the full mommy (and daddy) treatment.
