350Green to install 400 EV charging stations across the US

ChargePoint

EV charging stations are still hard to come by here in the US and, while 400 new ones won’t exactly blanket the nation, we’ll take what we can get. 350Green is teaming up with Coulomb Technologies to build exactly that many new ChargePoint stations across New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana and California. With the latest announcement the ChargePoint Network is expected to grow to over 1,000 locations, many with fast charging capabilities. We wouldn’t exactly call the plan a game changer but, like we said, every little bit helps. Check out the PR after the break.

Toyota demos Prius’ proximity notification system, touts ‘futuristic’ purr (video)

Silence may be a virtue under most circumstances, but not when you’re driving around a leafy, residential neighborhood in your Toyota Prius. That’s why the manufacturer came out with its very own vehicle proximity notification system last year — a “futuristic,” underhood noisemaker designed to alert pedestrians and the visually impaired to the plug-in’s presence. Now, Toyota has offered more details on its safety system, in a freshly released demo video starring the 2012 Prius V. The car’s artificial engine noise, as the company explains, only kicks in at speeds below 15 miles per hour, allowing it to broadcast its audible heads-up across parking lots or other low-speed zones. The sound itself, meanwhile, emanates from external speakers and consists of a blend of high and low frequencies that won’t be by muffled by background noise or physical obstacles. The vehicle’s pitch shift technology also enables the tone to rise in pitch as the car speeds up and to fall as it slows down, giving others an idea of how fast it’s approaching. Accelerate past the break to see the full video for yourself, while John Kerry nods in silent approval.

Edison2’s Very Light Car is now very electric, too

When we caught a glimpse of Edison2’s Very Light Car earlier this year, we were told to expect an electric version of the X-Prize winning featherweight in the near future. Well, here it is. Known as the eVLC, this “supremely aerodynamic” concept car is powered by a 10-kWh battery pack and, believe it or not, can comfortably seat four passengers. The plug-in has yet to go through the EPA’s official round of mileage testing, but Edison2 claims that the eVLC is far more fuel efficient than the Nissan Leaf and believes it could even receive the highest MPGe rating ever awarded. There’s still no word on when this little critter could hit the market, but you can check out Autoblog Green‘s gallery (at the source link below) for a more extensive tour of what Edison2 calls the “inevitable future of the automobile.”

German engineers want to halve EV manufacturing costs by 2018, seem confident about it

Yearning for an EV that can fit within your budget? You may not have to wait too long, according a group of engineers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), who are aiming to halve plug-in manufacturing costs by 2018. It’s all part of something called Competence E — a €200 million ($273 million) initiative that will draw upon the expertise of 250 scientists from 25 different institutes, in the hopes of creating new and more cost-effective methods of producing power trains and batteries. Under the publicly funded project, which was announced at last week’s International Motor Show, KIT’s researchers will construct a “research factory” where they’ll develop and demonstrate their processes and technologies. According to project leader Andreas Gutsch, the idea isn’t to create concepts that could bear fruit a few decades down the road, but to develop more pragmatic solutions that can be integrated at the industrial level within a relatively short time frame. “We are no longer focused on studying individual molecules or components, but on developing solutions on the system level, which meet industrial requirements,” Gutsch told Science|Business. “We are actively approaching industry and will even intensify these efforts…We are conducting excellent research for application, not for the drawer.” A full 50 engineers will begin working on Competence E next year, with the project scheduled to wrap up by 2018. Purr past the break for more details, in the full press release.

Hands-on with Toyota’s Prius plug-in hybrid (video)

Yesterday we attended Toyota’s Green Drive Expo where we were given the opportunity to take the production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid (PHV) — and its smorgasbord of technology — for a spin. We spent a couple hours driving interfacing with the computers aboard the Advanced model, which besides being outlet-friendly, includes some unique features within the Prius lineup. Explore our gallery below, and hit the break for our impressions and hands-on videos with the latest incarnation of Toyota’s iconic vehicle.

Artega SE electric supercar is coming to the US, we go eyes-on

Artega SE electric supercar is coming to the US, we go eyes-on

With the Tesla Roadster‘s tenure drawing to a close and a proper two-seat replacement seemingly just a twinkle in Peter Rawlinson‘s eye at this point, there’s something of a coming void in the world of the electric supercar. Artega would love to fill that with the SE. It’s an all-electric version of the company’s GT supercar, and while the GT will not see a release on American shores, we got confirmation from Artega that the battery-powered SE will — eventually. The 375 horsepower motor drives the car to 62MPH in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 126.5. Maximum range is 172 miles, but drive the car “more enthusiastically” and you can expect a more realistic 124.

The car was announced earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and here in Frankfurt we were able to spend a few minutes ogling its curves in a variety of interesting colors, including one model with a cut-away fender showing off the positioning of some of the 16 battery modules. 12 of those are scattered around the rear of the car, while four are up front, giving the car a rearward-biased 40:60 weight distribution. Cost is said to be 150,000 euro, or about $207,000. That’s nearly twice the cost of a Roadster. Worth it? We’ll see.

Toyota officially unveils production Prius plug-in hybrid, available March 2012 for $32,000

Prius fans, that long road to a promised plug-in hybrid’s coming to an end. Toyota rolled out its production model PHV at the Green Drive Expo, announcing a March 2012 availability for the car, and a $32,000 price tag for the base model. The partial EV will be offered in two trim versions with a touchscreen audio / navigation display and Toyota’s Entune in-car entertainment system to come standard, with the Heads Up display reserved for the advanced models. Expect to get about 87 MPGe with the auto in combined drive mode, and 49MPG when it switches to hybrid. As for that old NiMH battery, the new 4.4kWh Li-ion replacement gains a full charge after about three hours on a 120v source, and can re-up the juice in less than two hours on a 240v connection. You can dive into the PR for all the details after the break, and look forward to our in-depth hands-on in a few.

Fisker Karma pushes deliveries back again as it awaits federal emissions certification

It looks like those eager to finally take a Fisker Karma EV home will have to wait a bit longer, again. This time, though, the delay is largely out of the company’s hands, as it’s simply waiting for final federal certification on emissions regulations before it delivers the first test vehicles to dealers. According to the company, the first of those are now expected to be delivered by the end of September, although at least some dealers apparently won’t be fulfilling orders until the first week of November.

TomTom announces Z.E. Live navigation system to measure EV battery juice, keeps you truckin’

There’s nothing worse than going for a late-night chili dog run only to find your EV sucked dry in a 7-11 parking lot. To reduce so-called “range-anxiety,” there’s the Carminat TomTom Z.E. Live, an in-dash navigation system that not only keeps drivers from getting lost, but also offers a visual cue to how much power’s left. Sticking with the green theme, the device provides the most eco-friendly and efficient routes (with nearby charging stations) — leaving drivers feeling good about putting the pedal to the metal. The nav will come pre-baked in all future Renault Fluence Z.E.s — but we wouldn’t be surprised to see other EV manufacturers implement similar add-ons in the future. Check out the full PR after the break.

Volkswagen Nils concept has an HTC Desire HD dashboard, seats one Engadget editor

VW Nils

Audi isn’t the only one with a tiny little EV with exposed wheels at Frankfurt this year. Parent company Volkswagen has one too, but this is even smaller. It’s called the Nils and it’s designed for commuters in the “world of tomorrow” — commuters who will be very thin and, apparently, short. Big people just don’t fit well into this tiny thing, but if you’re of modest size or below this could be an interesting little ride. It has only 34-horsepower (25kW) available from a rear-mounted electric motor, but since it weighs just 1,000-pounds (460kg) that should make for some peppy commutes — of less than 40 miles (65 kilometers), which is the maximum range here. More details after the break.
