Exclusive: Samsung Captivate for AT&T preview

AT&T may have been accused of crippling its Android phones, but the Samsung Captivate — one of the US versions of the Galaxy S — is about to change all of that. Oh sure, the company released the specs last week, but us resourceful folk got some hands-on time with the Super AMOLED-boasting, Android 2.1 phone prior to its unknown stateside launch. The model we got to play with was clearly an early build (it wasn’t even branded Samsung or AT&T), but that didn’t stop us from putting it through the paces at a local Starbucks. Hit the break for a bulleted breakdown of our impressions and a short hands-on video. Oh, and don’t forget to make a pit stop at the gallery below before getting into the good stuff.

iPhone 4 arrives at Walmart

Check out that sweet, sweet box. Yes folks, we seem to have received our very first in-the-cardboard picture of the retail iPhone 4 out in the wild. We don’t work at Walmart, so we can’t verify this one for ourselves, but our tipster says Apple’s latest phone has just landed in the big box retailer’s storehouses.

P.S. — Before you start frothing at the mouth, the CDMA coding on the box in the background relates to an LG 290C handset also stocked by Walmart.

Exclusive: The New Gigantic Lego Imperial Shuttle [Lego]

Every year Lego gives us a huge multi-thousand piece Star Wars model, like the 5,195-brick Millennium Falcon or the 3,800-brick Death Star. Now it’s the turn for an all-time favorite of mine: The 2,504-piece Lambda-Class Imperial Shuttle. More »

White HTC EVO 4G coming exclusively to Best Buy on July 11th, pre-orders start today

Jumpin’ Jehosaphat! Just when you thought America’s first 4G phone couldn’t get any hotter, along comes this: a striking white version of the HTC EVO 4G (so much for that unavailable white iPhone 4, eh?). We’ve received confirmation that this here handset will be sold exclusively through Best Buy (as in, don’t even bother heading to your local Sprint store), with the official launch date set for July 11th. We’re told that Sprint will eventually gain access on August 8th, with other retailers snapping it up in September. If you somehow managed to hold off on snagging the existing black EVO 4G, you can get your pre-order in starting on June 18th — yeah, today, Junior! We’re assuming the price will remain at $199.99 on a 2-year contract, but be sure to drop us a line if you wander in and find out otherwise.

Update: And it’s official; the presser is after the break confirming the same $199.99-on-a-2-year-contract price as well as the dates mentioned already.

Update 2: Turns out this thing was around way back at Google I/O! Head on past the break and mash play — that’s definitely a white-backed EVO 4G on stage. Thanks, Omar!

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 tablet sports WiFi and 3G data, about as thick as an iPhone?

Samsung’s 7-inch Tab has certainly captured everyone’s attention as another possible anti-iPad tablet. So far, Samsung’s only saying that its Galaxy Tab will launch in Q3 without providing much in the way of detail other than this picture tweeted (and then pulled) by a Samsung’s official Twitter account in South Africa. Since then we’ve seen rumored specs that include Android 2.2, a 7-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz A8 processor, 4,000mAH battery, 370-gram weight, and 16GB of on-board memory with up to 32GB of microSD expansion.

Today we’ve received an anonymous tip with even more info. After a series of communications with this person, we’re confident enough to at least pass along what was said. Mind you, we’re still classifying it as rumor until we see further evidence. First off, our source claims to have spent time with the same four-button device we saw in the video yesterday. The “sturdy and well-built” tablet was “very thin,” described as about the same thickness as an iPhone. Our source says that the P1000 model is correct and that it will indeed feature “full phone functionality” albeit without a dedicated earpiece on the bezel — for audio, you’ll have to rely on a Bluetooth headset or the P1000’s speaker. Thank gawd… the last thing we want to see is someone screaming into a 7-inch tablet held to the side of their head. There’s a front-facing camera for video calling and a 3.2 megapixel camera around back for shooting pictures and video. Granted, 3.2 megapixels seems suspiciously low for the notoriously pixel greedy Samsung. Besides Bluetooth, we’re told that the Galaxy Tab will also feature WiFi and 3G data, a standard SIM slot, and can tether over USB or WiFi. Oh, and the battery can’t be removed and the version our source used had a 6×4 icon layout and appeared to be running stock Android 2.2 Froyo. Interesting, eh?

P.S. GPS too.

Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?

We have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn’t ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.

We’ve also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual “hello” without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze’s legal representation. Curious don’t you think? Your move Emblaze.

Exclusive: Motorola Droid X preview

Not interested in waiting until the 23rd for Verizon’s big announcement? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered right now! The Motorola Droid X has probably been one of the worst kept smartphone secrets in recent memory, but after spending two hours with the phone we sort of see why. In short, it’s pretty awesome. Call it a superphone or a mega-smartphone, but the 4.4-inch handset is absolutely Verizon / Motorola’s answer to the HTC EVO 4G, and makes the Droid Incredible look like a bench warmer. What do we mean? We’ll let you see for yourself just after the break in a breakdown of exactly what this phone is all about — and in a video or three of it in action. Oh, and on your way down, make sure to feast your eyes on the gallery, too.
