Vestel, Extent bring Android games to TVs, with ‘all-you-can-eat’ subscription service

Just last week Vestel was busy showing of its BitTorrent Certified Television, and now the company’s teaming up with Extent to deliver Android games to your boob tube — and it’s doing so by playing off your love of a bottomless buffet. Described as “the world’s first all-you-can-eat Android TV game subscription service,” GameTanium allows users of Vestel’s Smart Box set-top box to access a suite of TV-optimized games in the comfort of their living rooms, using their Android phones as controllers. What’s more, the service lets them switch between their PC, cellphone, tablet or TV without ever losing their place in a game. The service will be debuted at this week’s IBC, but if this announcement has left you hungry for more, there’s always the Golden Corral. Full PR awaits you and your belly after the break.

LG’s ‘Dual Play’ TVs let gamers share a single screen, different perspective

Challenging Sony’s PlayStation 3D display, LG’s new LW980T “Dual Play” TV lets Xbox users see two different views on the same screen — ditching the standard split gaming view. Spotted this week at IFA, the technology requires a pair of snazzy all-right / all-left passive specs and a compatible 3D Xbox game to get two different 2D perspectives on one TV. Compared to Sony’s $499, 24-inch active-shutter offering, the 47-inch and 55-inch passive ‘tubes are significantly larger and more expensive, rumored to retail for £1799 (or $2915) and £2499 (or $4050), respectively. According to sources, this feature will join LG’s lineup of Cinema 3D displays sometime in September — offering gaming as well as LG’s SmartTV and 3D movie support. Hey gamers, since we’re not splitting up anymore, is it safe to say we can stay “in a relationship” on Facebook?

Frogger Decades leaps into App Store, still going strong after 30 years of being hit by trucks

My, how time flies. Can it really be 30 years since the original Frogger was released into arcades in 1981? To celebrate the anniversary, Konami has unleashed a new version of the game into the App Store known as Frogger Decades. Along with the familiar highway scenes, you’ll be treated to new environments such as swamps and islands, along with opportunities to solve puzzles along the way. A classic D-pad controller is built-in for those seeking a slice of nostalgia, but you’re also free to hop about using touch input on the screen. The game retails for $2 with versions for the iPhone and iPad, and it supports competitive play via the Open Feint network. We know what we’ll be doing tonight. Care to join us?

PS Vita to pack 512MB of RAM, support cross-game voice chat

What’s the difference between Sony’s PlayStation Vita and the PS3? About 256MB of RAM, apparently. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the forthcoming handheld will boast a full 512MB of RAM (compared to the PS3’s 256MB), allowing the Vita to support cross-game voice chat via its Party feature. Yoshida’s confirmation effectively debunks earlier rumors that Sony would be halving the Vita’s RAM, in order to compete with the 3DS’ lower price, though the console does feature comparatively less V-RAM (just 128MB, versus the PS3’s 256MB). According to the executive, however, that disparity won’t make too much of a difference on the gaming experience, due to changes in the Vita’s display resolution. “The resolution on the PS Vita screen is much lower,” Yoshida said. “Even though it’s four times the resolution of PSP, compared to the console, the amount of data you have to push is much smaller.” The proof, of course, is in the pudding, but unfortunately, we probably won’t be tasting it for a while.

Nintendo to release streamlined Wii in the UK, at reduced, holiday season price

It may be a while before we see the Wii U hit the market, but it looks like a refreshed version of its predecessor will be hitting the UK market just in time for the holiday shopping rush. According to the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine, the refreshed controller will sport a streamlined look and adjusted configuration, designed for horizontal orientation, rather than vertical. It will also be included in a “Family Edition” bundle scheduled for a holiday release, alongside a Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk console, and editions of Wii Party and Wii Sports. The downside, however, is that the slimmed-down Wii won’t be compatible with GameCube games or controllers, though it will reportedly be sold at a reduced, unspecified price. No word yet on whether Nintendo has a similar update in store for markets outside of the UK, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.

SteelSeries Sensei mouse points at the moon, we concentrate on its finger

It’s been more than two years since SteelSeries unveiled its Xai and Kinzu gaming mice, but the peripheral maker has now returned with a brand new sword in hand — the sleek and presumably sage Sensei. The device, unveiled yesterday, is powered by a 32-bit ARM processor that can digest images at up to 12,000 frames per second and rocks up to 5,700 CPI, with a Double CPI option that extends to 11,400 DCPI, for users gaming across multiple screens. The ambidextrous controller also comes outfitted in a metal coating that won’t slip from your hands and connects to computers via a gold-plated USB. Best of all, PC gamers can use SteelSeries’ Engine software to customize their experience even further, with pre-set configurations and user profiles. The Sensei is slated for release next month, when it will retail for $90 (or €90). Click past the break for more details in the full press release.

Nintendo to release Flame Red 3DS console next month, sunglasses not included

Better dust off your finest pair of shades, because this Flame Red Nintendo 3DS is on its way to the States. The console, which launched earlier this summer in Japan as the Red Flare, will hit stores next month (alongside the new Star Fox 64 3D game), joining a 3DS lineup that already features Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue. The company will also be releasing two new games this winter — Super Mario 3D Land in November and Mario Kart 7 in December — in the hopes of rectifying its disappointing Q2 earnings report with a strong holiday campaign. Only time will tell whether or not it has any effect on Nintendo’s bottom line, but if you’re interested in adding a touch of Santa-like cheer to your yuletide gaming season, you can grab a Flame Red console on September 9th, for $170. Find more information in the full PR, after the break.
