Best Buy nabs exclusive Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster

If you’re in the market for a new Rock Band axe, it looks like you’ll be heading to Best Buy very, very soon. That’s right, the Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster is seemingly a BB exclusive. The $280 peripheral, which requires the MIDI PRO-Adapter to function, will hit shelves on March 1st. Until then, we’ll just have to be happy with the Mustang Pro.

Sifteo Cubits launching next year; still really cute

We’ve been tracking the MIT-originated Siftables so far with grudgingly bemused expressions on our cynical, internet-hardened faces. Now we find out they’re called Sifteo Cubits, and they’ve got a slated release for the first quarter of next year. Sure, sure, we can keep it together. But then we saw this adorable press shot, and the callouses just fell right off our hardened blogger hearts. The 1.5-inch LCD-equipped blocks, which can sense motion and proximity while communicating with each other wirelessly, are going to be mostly used for games initially, though the possibilities seem endless — and endlessly quirky. At $149 it might be a hard sell for most, but Sifteo had us at “pixel art.” We should know more in January when Sifteo makes the full unveil.

Unreal Engine 3 dev kit adding iOS support tomorrow, Infinity Blade clones coming Friday

The Unreal Engine 3 already made a quite spectacular debut on iOS with Epic Games’ own Infinity Blade, but the company’s decided it’s time to finally stop teasing and give us the software to really play with it. Tomorrow’s planned update to the UDK will deliver iOS support, meaning that all the fancy tools that helped make Infinity Blade such a blindingly gorgeous game will be at your fingertips should you be feeling creative. Licensing for the Engine is free for testing and non-commercial use, but you’ll have to pay $99 if you want to sell anything you produce with it, to be followed by a 25 percent slice of your earnings beyond $5,000 and, of course, Apple’s 30 percent cut of whatever’s left. That might not sound like the best business plan in the world, but consider that Infinity Blade is estimated to have racked up over $1.5 million in sales already — we’re sure there’ll be enough change left for ice cream even after Epic and Apple have had their share.

IBM Computer Competing On Jeopardy

jeopardy logojpg

First they take all of our jobs–now they’re appearing on our gameshows. A computer will finally get a chance to appear on Jeopardy, when IBM’s Watson makes its debut on the popular game show in February. The computer will appear on three episodes, taking on two of the show’s biggest winner–Ken Jennings, who won $2.5 (playing in a record 74 consecutive games) and Brad Rutter, who pulled in 3.2 million.

The winner of the three-way contest will bring home $1 million. Rutter and Jennings will donate half of their winnings to charity, should they be victorious. If Watson wins, meanwhile, it will donate all of its profits.

There are a number of difficulties that Watson must overcome, in order to win, including an understanding of subtle language nuances like puns and riddles. IBM scientist David Ferrucci is confident in the computer’s abilities, however, stating, “After four years, our scientific team believes that Watson is ready for this challenge based on its ability to rapidly comprehend what the Jeopardy clue is asking, analyze the information it has access to, come up with precise answers, and develop an accurate confidence in its response.”

Watson was named for IBM founder Thomas J. Watson. Over the past few month, its programmers have been running it through 50 mock Jeopardy games.

Sphero toy ball rolls itself, you control it with your smartphone

Don’t have the airspace required for an AR.Drone? Gearing up for its CES 2011 debut, Sphero is a small, robotic toy ball made by Orbotix, and controlled remotely via Bluetooth and your smartphone’s tilt sensor. A ball that moves by itself? Call us lazy (too lazy to roll a ball even), but we think this is a toy whose time has come. Sure, the whole thing is pretty straightforward, although we hope that once iPhone and Android developers get ahold of that open API we’ll see plenty in the way of augmented reality gameplay: a maze or a racing game of some sort would make this thing quite coveted, in our opinion. Catch a video of the prototype in action after the break.

Angry Birds iPhone Cases Make Perfect Gifts

Angry Birds iPhone Case

If there’s someone on your holiday shopping list who simply can’t put down their mobile device because they’re too busy playing Angry Birds, they’ll be thrilled to unwrap an Angry Birds iPhone or iPod Touch case in their stocking this year. The cases are available now for $24.99 list price, and come in three designs: the Red Bird, the Yellow Bird, or the Pig King.
The cases are only available for the iPhone 4 and the newest iPod Touch, and are protective covers for the back of the device, so don’t expect screen protectors or belt clips here. Still, if you want to announce to the world that you’re an Angry Birds fanatic, or you’re buying for someone who is and wouldn’t mind everyone on the subway knowing it, this is the perfect gift.

Infinity Blade: An iOS Game Like You’ve Never Seen Before [Video]

Then dubbed Project Sword, Epic GamesInfinity Blade had as grand an unveiling as any iOS game could ever hope for—an introduction from Steve Jobs himself. It’s finally available, and, in short, it was definitely worth the hype. More »

App review: Infinity Blade (iPhone)

Aww, would you look at that, the iPhone’s trying to play big boy games! Following in the well received footsteps of Rage HD, today marks the debut of Infinity Blade, the second in what’s hopefully a wave of gorgeous-looking iOS games boasting advanced 3D graphics, if not 3D gameplay. Epic Games has put aside the chainsaw-equipped projectile weaponry of its wildly successful Gears of War console series to deliver the first mobile game built around its Unreal Engine 3. You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s utterly delicious to look at, and the visuals certainly helped transport us to this alien realm of swords, axes, shields, and magical rings — where body armor is optional, but helmets apparently are not. Jump past the break to see this visual feast in motion and to soak up some more of our impressions.

Cypress Hill backup singer sees himself in Grand Theft Auto, sues Rockstar

Our friends, this next post is fraught with danger, excitement, and West Coast rappers with names like B-Real, Sen Dog, and Michael “Shagg” Washington. Indeed, the latter is alleging that Rockstar appropriated his likeness for the character CJ, a hood in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas whose life apparently shares many details with his own troubled upbringing, “including how the teen-agers in his gang rode around on bicycles,” according to his lawyer. It seems that way back in 2003 the Cypress Hill backup singer met with reps from the game studio for a two hour interview “to talk about street life,” and the next thing you know, San Andreas is released and you have criminals riding around on bikes! Coincidence? Mr. Shagg doesn’t think so, and he’s asking for twenty-five percent of Rockstar’s profits from the game — approximately $250 million — because they’ve “stolen his image and never paid him.” Now that we think of it, isn’t there an obsessive gadget blogger in that game that looks awfully familiar? We’d better call our lawyers.

The Top PC Games for the Holidays

AcerPredator.png

We’ve already shown you the top holiday gaming picks for the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Sony PS3. Now it’s the PC’s turn. As with consoles before it–particularly the Xbox 360 and PS3–there’s a bit of title overlap, but the PC also has a few titles all to itself, from the intense MMORGP gameplay of the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack to the casual gaming phenomenon that is Bejeweled.
