Nielsen: majority of US app purchases are games, iOS users play twice as long

Apparently, folks in the US love gaming on their mobile devices and really don’t mind forking over dead presidents to do so. That’s according to a recent 30-day study by Nielsen pertaining to apps across mobile platforms. The company found gaming apps to be the most popular in that period, citing that 64 percent of users played and 93 percent would pay to play. The average amount of time spent gaming was 7.8 hours, although iOS users took the award for most dedicated by nearly doubling that to 14.7 hours. Android loyalists followed with 9.3 hours of fun times, but those with BlackBerry, Windows, and “feature phones” kept things closer to business hitting under five hours each. Also notable, is that people rocking Berries and dumbphones usually opted for pre-installed games over downloads. Wii U landing after April 1st 2012, may stream video to controllers

Try as you might to maintain your nonchalant demeanor, we know you’re fired up about the potential of the Wii U. Well, we won’t spill your secrets, but we thought you might like to know that Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, recently sat down with David M. Ewalt at Forbes to talk about the company’s upcoming console. You’ll find the full interview at the source but here are a few of the more interesting tidbits. As you may have guessed, the original Wii won’t be disappearing immediately. The two will be sold side by side in stores for at least a little while. Interestingly, while we already knew that games will be playable entirely on the controller, turns out there is nothing technically stopping the console from streaming other media to the portable screen — including content from your Netflix account. Sadly, you’ll be waiting till at least Q2 of 2012 to pick one up — as Fils-Aime revealed, the next-gen gaming device won’t launch until “after April 1st.”

Toshiba reveals the Qosmio F750 glasses-free 3D laptop, we go hands on (video)

Toshiba just unveiled what it claims is the world’s first glasses-free 3D laptop, the Qosmio F750. It’s a heavy-set beast dedicated to gaming and movies, with a 15.6-inch Full HD lenticular screen that can display 2D and 3D simultaneously in separate windows. It also rocks an HD webcam that follows your movements and adjusts the 3D effect accordingly, so you can peek at the that lovely third dimension from almost any angle you like. Innovative stuff indeed, but we were underwhelmed when we caught a glimpse of Toshiba’s concept model back in January. So, has the technology improved since then? Sony PSN ‘Welcome Back’ promotion extended… for one more day

Chances are, anyone planning to grab those PSN freebies took their share when the promotion launched last month, but just in case you’ve been holding out, Sony’s giving you another 24 hours (from now) to download your pair of free PS3 and PSP games, 100 virtual items from PlayStation Home, and 30 days of PlayStation Plus. After then, you better be prepared to pay up for your copy of Dead Nation or LittleBigPlanet. The Xbox 360 Laptop

Ben Heckendorn is at it again but this time he is hacking away an Xbox 360. He loves to make things portable and despite the Xbox 360′s size and weight he went ahead to see what he could do. The result? A pretty sweet 14-lbs. laptop.

This thing is absolutely amazing with its 17″ LCD screen (1280×720) and water cooling system to solve the heat/space issue. It is also equipped with WiFi and, like all laptops, a built-in keyboard. If you’re like me then you will want to jump straight to the finishing photos to see what it looks like from all angles.

Even with the video and all of the pictures I still have a hard time believing that this thing could be made “portable.” One thing is for sure and it is that he has some jealous friends. Nice mod Ben!

Pic3D sheet brings glasses-free 3D to iPhone for $25

Many of us are perfectly content viewing only 2D content on our mobile devices, but if you’ve been dying to add a bit more depth to your smartphone’s display, Global Wave may have just what you’re looking for. At the 3D and Virtual Reality Expo in Tokyo, the Japanese company demoed its Pic3D sheet, which converts your Windows-based desktop or laptop, or iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into a 3D display. The sheet uses a lenticular lens system instead of a parallax barrier for a smoother, more consistent image, yielding a reported 90-percent transmission level and 120-degree field of view. The company’s Windows and iOS apps output video in a side-by-side format, simulating a 3D image. The software also allows you to view side-by-side content from the web, submitting the YouTube URL of a compatible video, for example — perhaps not the most elegant solution, but a good start, if it works. Prices range from ¥2,000 (about $25) for an iPhone or iPod touch sheet, all the way up to ¥15,000 (about $186) for a 23-inch desktop version. We’ll be on the lookout for Pic3D at the Tokyo Game Show in September, but in the meantime, you can get Diginfo TV‘s take in their video after the break.

AMD Llano desktop APU gets reviewed: the best integrated graphics in town

AMD is due to release a batch of new Llano APUs next month that are specifically tailored to desktops rather than laptops. The most powerful among them will be the 2.9GHz A8-3850, which has already caused a stir on the review circuit for one simple reason: it pulls off a brutal “one shot one kill” on Intel’s HD 3000 integrated graphics. AnandTech raised an impressed eyebrow at the fact that all its benchmarking games were playable on the $135 AMD chip, which roughly doubled frame rates in titles like Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock 2 and World of Warcraft compared to the more expensive Sandy Bridge i5 2500K. TechSpot declared the APU its “new budget king,” with graphical performance “on another level” compared even to an i7.

However, the superlatives quickly evaporated once reviewers shifted their focus to the CPU. TechReport spotted that pure CPU performance per dollar was actually lower than what you’d get from a lowly i3. Moreover, it reckoned you’d only have to spend an extra $70 to buy a much more powerful CPU and a separate graphics card — an option that comes “awfully close to making the A8-3850 seem irrelevant.” Ouch. Nevertheless, if an affordable processor with integrated graphics is what you’re after, then it’s fair to say this one sets the standard. Click the source links below for full reviews.
